Warehousing Case Study
The third approach is treating CO2 emissions a constraint within the inventory optimisation model. Chen et al. (2013) set total carbon emissions as a
constraint in the EOQ formula, they draw similar conclusion with Bouchery et al. (2012) that the CO2 emission can be reduced without significantly
increasing operation cost. it is possible to reduce emissions by adjusting order quantities. They also analyze the implementation of the results under
different carbon regulations. Hua et al. (2011) examine how companies manage carbon footprints in inventory management under the carbon emission
trading mechanism. This paper assumes the carbon emissions from warehouse has linear relationship with the inventory. CO2 emissions from

This kind of data could assist managers and researchers measure the energy consumption ang CO2 emissions of warehouses operations. All of these
four researchers agree that warehouse energy consumptions can be mainly classified into three endā€“use consumption types: HVAC (heating, ventilation
and airā€“conditioning), lighting and materials handling equipment (MHE). Dhooma and Baker (2012) summarize these as the following table.
Activities Equipment LightingArtificial lighting for task, decoration and safety HVAC Space heating and cooling, and vetilation MHE (material
handling equipment)Fixed MHEConveyors, cranes, miniā€“loads, booms, pick by light, packing equipment and compressors Mobile MHEReach,
counterbalance, narrow and very narrow aisle, pedestrian operated and flexiā€“truck trucks There are many studies investigating the proportion of energy
consumed by different endā€“use categories. There is no consistent and comprehensive data shows exactly how energy is used in warehouse (Dhooma
and Baker 2012). For example, in UK, DECC (2013a) shows that heating is the main energy consumption type, while United Kingdom Warehouse
Association (2010) indicates that 65% of energy is used for lighting and just 12 percent is used for heating. Similarly, Š’Ā¬Š’Ā¬ a study by Dhooma and
Baker (2012) of four ambient distribution centres shows that lighting accounts for 29% of energy used

The Data Warehouse Essays
A Data Warehouse is a databaseā€“centric system of decision support technologies used to consolidate business data from many disparate sources for use
in reporting and analysis (Data Warehouse). Data Warehouses and Data Warehouse systems are primary used to server executives, senior management,
and business analysts with accurate, consolidated information from various internal and external sources to aid in the process of making complex
business decisions (Data Warehouse Process).
The term Data Warehouse was first coined by Bill Inmon, who has been commonly recognized as the "father of data warehousing" and is the lead
proponent of the normalized or sometimes referred to as the topā€“down, approach to Data Warehouse design (Reed, M.)(Data...show more content...
Kimball's approach also involves the building of business process specific data marts that collect the transactional components of the original data and
form them into what are known as "facts" (the data that needs to be measured such as sales or purchases) and links them to well defined dimensions
(the data that facts are measured against for instance, the customers that make the purchases, the employees that make the sales, and the dates those
transactions occurred). This results in a logical structure commonly referred to as the starā€“schema data mart. It derives its name from the star like
appearance of a central fact table sorrowed by multiple dimension tables with each dimension table linked only to the fact table. The main advantages
of the dimensional model over the normalized model are greater performance and quicker time to initial benefit. The dimensional model achieves this
performance via the simplified logical structure of the starā€“schema data mart greatly reducing responseā€“time when reacting to user requests as opposed
to the spread

Q1. Define Warehousing or what is Warehousing?
DefinitionŠ¾Š‚Š‚ Warehousing is that part of firm's logistics System that stores products at and between pointā€“ofā€“origin and point of consumption, and
provides information to management of the status, condition, and disposition of items being stored.
A warehouse is a point in the logistics system where a firm stores or holds raw materials, semiā€“ finished goods, or finished goods for varying periods of
time.
In the macroeconomic sense, warehousing performs a vital function. It creates time utility for raw materials, industrial goods and finished products.
The proximity of marketā€“oriented warehousing to the customer allows a firm to serve the customer with shorter lead times. This...show more content...

Sponsor: Our CEO is aware of the ongoing organization issue and is fully supporting this project. He is overseeing the budget and keeping our

Project Manager: Our operations manager is the manager for this project. He is responsible to set the timelines, monitor costs, and ensure that the

The warehouse staff will need to move items to temporary storage locations, assist in setting up racking, and restocking shelves. Our data entry
department will be required to update each item with package sizes, weights, and warehouse location information. Triple constraints: 1. Performance.
The driving constraint on this project is the performance. The most important aspect of this project is that the warehouse is able to quickly find
needed products. Time wasted in searching for products delays our delivery trucks leaving in a timely manner and also means that walk in customers
have to wait for an excessive amount of time 2. Time. The middle constraint on this project is time. The improved performance of the warehouse staff
when this project is more important than the cost. This project is not very expensive in terms of cash outlay, and if it could be sped up by spending a
little extra money, either through overtime wages or expedited racking modifications, that would benefit us greatly. 3. Cost. On this project, cost is the
least important constraint. Anything that can be spent to improve either the performance or the time is well worth

Safety in Warehouses
Warehouses, large or small, can be hazardous places. The following details highlight some of the risks that might exist in your warehouse and the
steps you can take to prevent accidents. The list is by no means exhaustive and will vary according to the particular type of premises and operation. As
a starting point, use the blank sheet provided in this pack and carry out your own simple risk assessment.
Main Types of Hazard
Storage and Racking Incorrectly stacked goods may fall injuring staff below. Overloading of shelves/racks may lead to collapse. Unsafe methods of
stacking or retrieval of goods may lead to falls e.g. persons climbing on racking, being raised on the forks of lift trucks (FLTs) or using unsuitable

lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling. s Use mechanical devices where possible, e.g. trolleys, pallet movers, FLTs, conveyors, scissor lifts etc. s
Train staff in safe lifting techniques. s Consider breaking up loads to make them more manageable or the use of two or more people for certain jobs. s
Ensure aisles are of sufficient width and consider raising the height of any working platforms to reduce the need to bend or twist. s Keep passageways,
stairs and delivery areas clear. s Dispose of loose packaging and bindings properly. s Clean up spillages immediately and display warning notices. s
Fasten cables securely to the floor or reā€“route overhead if possible
Slips, Trips and Falls Uneven, slippery or obstructed floor surfaces, trailing cables and poor general housekeeping may lead to accidents. Hazardous
Substances Certain items of stock (and some chemicals used for cleaning) may be classified as hazardous or highly flammable. Exposure to some of
these chemicals through leaks or spillages could cause burns, dermatitis or could be harmful if inhaled.
s Obtain information on the risks associated with all substances stored and used on the premises from the manufacturer's hazard data sheet. s Provide
special storage conditions if necessary, e.g. a fire resistant store or cabinet s Inspect substances on delivery to ensure packaging is intact, devise safe
handling procedures and store in original containers. s Devise a procedure for
