1. Challenges
The DCS I/Os and hardware are fine, but the outdated computers had become a huge burden to plant safety and
performance. It also had caused a high maintenance cost due to obsolescence of spare parts. In addition, our customers
wanted to develop useful applications for operation and engineering, and they needed to increase capacity of their
computers for supporting various information of their plants.
Solutions
For high performances and reliable system, ARIDES improved TCS performance and communication with Mark V DCS.
Especially, by redundancy of ARCNET networks and ARIDES servers, the system can provide data from <C> core and <D>
core without any loss. In addition, ARIDES reinforced various types of trend charts, system status overview for checking
processing status and networks, point and group setting function. Also, it supported powerful historian with back up system
and various types of reports.

2. Challenges
The DCS I/Os and hardware are fine but the outdated computers had become a huge burden to plant safety and had
caused a high maintenance cost due to obsolescence of spare parts. It is desirable to replace the computers and the
software used. However, since the ABB Procontrol DCS is a closed system, it is difficult to establish a high-speed, 2-way,
and large-scale data communication between the DCS and a modern computer system.
Solutions
To overcome the obstacles, a high-speed network bride board was developed to interface ABB Procontrol bus with Ethernet.
A special interface driver was developed to establish a direct communication between the ABB Procontrol DCS and ARIDES
real-time database.
