3. PART ONE
Introduction to Bishoftu Automotive Manufacturing
Industry
Bishoftu automotive manufacturing industry was first
established in 1984E.C, and has been part of METEC
and now it is under Ethio-Engineering Group.
It have different sectors: namely,
Design and Development
Power Train
Vehicle Production Factory
Tank Production Factory
Body and Frame Production Factory and more.
3
4. Main products and service
Maintenance and supply of frames of
vehicles
Supply and maintenance of
construction machineries, heavy duty
buses and trucks
Supply and maintenance of light
vehicles.
4
5. Customers of the Company
Ministry of Defense
Federal and Regional Government Offices
Non-governmental Organizations
Private firms and Others

6. PART TWO
OVERALL INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE
Section of the company we have been
working in
Garage
Power train
Light duty vehicle production
6
7. Work tasks that we have been practicing
on
Light and heavy duty car maintenance
This work has many steps with the special tools and
specification, which includes
engine assembling, disassembling and inspection
checking tires, shafts, gearboxes and replace those
damaged and worn parts
lubricate all parts with gear box oil before installation
wheel alignment
optimize the vehicle's driving characteristics, and
minimize possible tire wear, the front wheels must be
aligned at previously calculated angles.
7
8. Other services
perform annual service according to the
manufacturer check list
perform basic service according to the
manufacturer check list
replace wiper washer reservoir
remove and replace friction plates and
installing gear box on the truck
remove the clutch servo
install the clutch servo
8
9. Challenges observed during the internship
Long working hours
No working clothes and other supports are given
for us in the company
Low number of customers

10. PART THREE
PROJECT SELECTED AND WORKED OUT
Project title: Design of hydraulically operated tire and
brake drum handler
Short summary of the project
The usual way of removing brake drum and tire is
done manually by lever and using other metals which
needs more time and more man power
Decrease time consumption of workers so benefit to
the company. Almost every vehicle needs tire
servicing and brake lining which need removal of tire
as well as brake drum.
So hydraulically operated tire and brake drum handler
is designed to modify the way a tire and brake drum is
removed and installed.
10
11. Weekly work plan
11
Buy and weld
parts of the
machine
12. Problem statement and justification
The problem we observe in the company includes
the use of high human labor to remove and install
tire and brake drum.
So the project discusses on the design of tire and
brake drum handler which operates hydraulically.
The main problems are:-
Requires more time to execute the operation
It needs high man power to remove and install
It needs high safety to execute the operation
12
13. Objective of the Project
Main objective:
Design of tire and brake drum handler
Specific objectives:
Reduce time needed for the operation
Reduce man power needed
Increasing the productivity of the operation
Protecting the quality of the product
13
14. Methodology
When we design the tire and brake drum we
followed the following methods:
Collect data for the project from different sources
Identify the possible mechanisms
Select the proper material for each part
Do each part design calculation
Take the result and decision
Draw a detail drawing of each part
Draw assembly drawing of the machine
Doing the cost estimation
Give conclusion about design
14
16. Design Considerations
Operating Pressure = 30MPa
Total Load = 0.071ton = 710N
Maximum lifting height of the ram =
30mm
Total number of stroke needed = 15times
Human force applied = 30N
16
27. Working principle
First fill the oil into the reservoir of the hydraulic bottle
jack
Push the machine to the car that need wheel service
Pump the hydraulic bottle jack using lever up to
required height of brake drum or the lifted height of
the vehicle intended for
Insert the brake drum of the vehicle to the support
curve or place the tire on tire handler frame base
Tighten the drum using bolts or chain through the hole
prepared or tighten the tire to the handler using chain
if needed
Pull the machine to the specified position
After finishing the servicing again push the machine to
the vehicle
Finally install the brake drum or the tire to the vehicle.
27
29. Conclusion
Tire and brake drum handling machine is designed
to remove and install a tire brake drum of vehicles
It is special solution for the company to remove
and install the brake drum of car easily
It saves man power and time to execute
It has high safety
It has high lifting ability than curved metal
Its cost is not expensive
29
30. Recommendation
We recommend the company that this
hydraulically operated tire and drum brake
handler is a total benefit for all bodies
involved when performing the operation,
so we recommend to manufacture the
project and use the product.
