Patience
Taught by Br Wajdi Akkari
Commentary of Shaikh Ibn Uthaymeen
Lesson 7
Abu Malik Al-Harith bin Asim Al-Ash`ari (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that:
The Messenger of Allah (‫ﷺ‬) said: "Purification is half of faith; the utterance of (Al-hamdu
lillah - all praise belongs to Allah) fills the Scales of good actions; the utterance of
(Subhan Allah wa Al-hamdu lillah) (Allah is far removed from every imperfection and all
praise belongs to Allah) fills the space between the heavens and the earth, and Salah
(prayer) is light; and charity is the proof of Faith; and patience is light, and the Qur'an is a
plea in your favour or against you. Every person departs; he either ransoms it or puts it
into perdition".
[Muslim]
• Charity is accepted from believers
• The Qur’an will act in your favour or will be against you; if recite it but do not follow
it
• However you act, you will ransom yourself from the punishment or destroy yourself
Hadith
Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that: Certain people of the
Ansar asked the Messenger of Allah (‫ﷺ‬) and he gave them; then they again asked him
and he gave them until all what he possessed was exhausted. Then the Prophet (‫ﷺ‬) said,
"Whatever wealth I have, I will not withhold from you. Whosoever would be chaste and
modest; Allah will keep him chaste and modest and whosoever would seek self
sufficiency, Allah will make him self-sufficient; and whosoever would be patient, Allah will
give him patience, and no one is granted a gift better and more comprehensive than
patience".
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
• There are different levels of patience; some are born with it while others have to
acquire
• Ashaj ibn Asr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him,
said to me, “Verily, you have two qualities which are loved by Allah the Exalted.” I
said, “What are they?” The Prophet said, “Forbearance and modesty.” I said, “Are
these qualities I have acquired or Allah gave me upon creating me?” The Prophet
said, “Allah created you with these qualities.” I said, “All praise is due to Allah who
has given me two qualities loved by Him.”
• But we have to make the effort – if we strive for it Allah will give it to us
Hadith
Abu Yahya Suhaib bin Sinan (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that: The
Messenger of Allah (‫ﷺ‬) said, "How wonderful is the case of a believer; there is good for
him in everything and this applies only to a believer. If prosperity attends him, he
expresses gratitude to Allah and that is good for him; and if adversity befalls him, he
endures it patiently and that is better for him".
[Muslim]
• We are thankful to Allah at all times and patient
• Sins can be expiated
• There is a Hadith – If Allah loves a particular people, He will test them and a slave
will continue to be tested till they walk on the earth with no sins
• If Allah wills good for a slave, He will hasten His punishment in the dunya and if He
wills ill for a slave He will withhold His punishment till the Akhira
• We should consider difficulty and hardship an expiation of our sins and a test from
Allah. In addition it could mean we will not be asked about certain sins on Yawm-ul
Qiyamah if we are patient
• If one is not patient he may lose both – no reward for patience and no forgiveness.
Hadith
Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: When the last illness of Messenger of
Allah (‫ﷺ‬) made him unconscious, Fatimah (May Allah be pleased with her) exclaimed:
"Ah, the distress of my dear father.'' He (‫ﷺ‬) said, "There will be no distress for your father
after today". When he died she said: "My father, Allah has called you back and you have
responded to His Call. O father! Garden of Firdaus is your abode. O father! We announce
to Jibril your death.'' When he was buried, she said: "Are you satisfied now that you put
earth over (the grave of) Messenger of Allah (‫ﷺ‬)?'' (expression of sadness)
[Al-Bukhari]
• We are allowed to be sad as long as it does not result in growing the beard for so long
and then shaving it or women rip clothes etc – not Sunnah and are in fact Bid’ah
• Isboo’ of 1 week or 40 days or a 1 year anniversary – Bid’ah
• Family of deceased making food and people gather to read Quran is another common
innovation that we should refrain from
Hadith
Usamah bin Zaid (May Allah be pleased with them) narrated: The daughter of the
Prophet (‫ﷺ‬) sent for him as her child was dying, but the Prophet (‫ﷺ‬) returned the
messenger and sent her good wishes saying, "Whatever Allah takes away or gives,
belongs to Him, and everything with Him has a limited fixed term (in this world),
and so she should be patient and anticipate Allah's reward.'' She again sent for him
adjuring him for the sake of Allah to come. The Messenger of Allah, accompanied
with Sa`d bin `Ubadah, Mu`adh bin Jabal, Ubayy bin Ka`b, Zaid bin Thabit and
some other men went to see her. The child was lifted up to the Messenger of Allah
while his breath was disturbed in his chest. On seeing that, the eyes of the Prophet
(‫ﷺ‬) streamed with tears. Sa`d said, "O Messenger of Allah! What is this?'' He
replied, "It is compassion which Allah has placed in the hearts of His slaves, Allah is
Compassionate only to those among His slaves who are compassionate (to
others)".
Another version says: Messenger of Allah (‫ﷺ‬) said, "Allah shows compassion only
to those among His slaves who are compassionate".
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
Hadith
• When the slander of Aisha came about, Misbah (a muhajjir, and faqeer), a relative
of Abu-Bakr whom he used to spend on talked about it. When this reached Abu-
Bakr and her innocence was declared in surah Noor; he swore he would no longer
spend on him
• Allah then revealed – ‘Don't you wish Allah will forgive and pardon you’ – so he
returned to spend on him
• Forgiveness became conditional - if you show mercy Allah will show mercy to you
• Patience is compulsory – the Prophet (‫)ﷺ‬ told a man to be patient and to seek
Allah's reward
• The Prophet (‫)ﷺ‬ taught the best format of offering condolences – better than the
statement ‘May Allah multiply your reward and forgive the deceased’
• Offering condolences is not congratulating someone or a festival where
innovations take place. It is Sunnah to bring food but not turn it into a dinner
• We should learn the Sunnah – for our wills’
