9. Signifer and Signified
• The basic linguistics unit SIGN has the combination of
a signifier (sound image) and a signified (concept),
whose arbitray association produces meaning.
• Signifiers are the physical forms of signs we use to
signify meaning and concepts.
10. Activity
Look carefully and critically at the following logo. Begin your
analysis by describing their physical form: colour; shape,
form and words. Then suggest why the organisation used
this particular signifier.
