Self-Expression In Literature
To me, self–expression is one of the most valuable things humans are able to experience. Being allowed to freely put your thoughts and feelings out
into the world is such an incredible gift that many people seem to ignore or take for granted. Whether it be painting a picture to showcase your
sentiments, writing a blogpost about something you're interested in, or dancing to music just because it feels good, expressing yourself creatively
is an amazing thing that we are capable of doing, as we are able to beautifully and imaginatively portray our inner thoughts and emotions for
ourselves and for others to see. The arts, such as literature, drawing, and music, has always played a very important role in my life, and has helped
shaped me into the person I am today. Throughout my entire student career, English Language and Literature has always been my favorite subject.
The shelves in my bedroom are filled with books that I've read and reread ever since 7th grade, as I was an avid reader growing up and would buy a
new novel almost every week for me to enjoy. Reading has always been a favorite hobby of mine because being completely captivated with a story
and feeling as if you were experiencing the events in the book yourself is incredibly fascinating to me. Moreover, I always enjoyed English class in
school because the books we would be assigned to read were always very interesting, and I loved to write my thoughts and feelings about them. In
middle school I even dreamt about

The Importance Of Fiction In Literature
Reading fiction, in my experience, creates an unforgettable vivid mental image in my brain. In "Why Our Future Depends on Libraries, Reading and
Daydreaming," Neil Gaiman asserts that reading fiction is vital for everyone. Fiction can lead to answers. It has the power to teach us lessons that plain
non–fiction cannot. Moreover, fiction can improve our imagination. It can let us imagine things that are abnormal for common sense but beneficial for
humankind. Perhaps most importantly, fiction can let us understand who we are. Therefore, allowing us to recognize our core strengths and
weaknesses. I agree with Neil Gaiman's lecture that fiction is significant for children since not only did it help me in my childhood, it still helps me as
I grow up.
As has been noted, fiction is important since it has helped me solve problems, without fictional novels, I would not be who I am now. As a matter
of fact, fiction has lead me to understanding English at a fast pace. On my arrival to Canada, I spoke English no better than a newborn child. The
introduction of graphic novels have opened a new path of understanding for me, as Neil Gaiman mentions, fiction "forces you to learn new words"
(Gaiman 2013) When I arrived to Canada, everything was foreign to me since I understood nothing and I had to learn a foreign language, and reading
novels were difficult. Reading my first picked English novel, Amulet: The Stonekeeper boosted my confidence since it had a visual aspect to it and

Literature Essay It's a kind of complex essay that gives the reader the depth of what you have written. Its helps the reader in enhancing their
knowledge and understanding. Its not simple as other essays it has different elements that needs to be taken care of and if they are not applied

What is Literature?
Poems, novels, and stories; these are some of the things that first came to my mind upon pondering on the question 'What is Literature?'. And just
lately I have known that literature also includes songs, speeches, plays, and many others in written and spoken forms. I have also known that things
that are produced out of creative imagination can be referred as literary works which are the ones that comprise literature. Considering this description
of what literature is, the coverage of literature seems very puzzling. If literary works are those produced out of creative imagining, then it would
directly point to fictional works. But then, there are also...show more content...
Take for example the views of two individuals coming from different places on anovel based on the culture of one. It would likely be the same if their
culture and beliefs are quiet related but if not, then they would surely have different understandings on certain parts of that novel. Hence, defining
literature as those considered by people as 'literature' is questionable.
Eagleton also associated literature as any kind of works which are valued highly by people. But then again, since people may have different
perceptions on things, one may value highly a certain work while another person may consider it just as a plain writing. As stated by Ms. Pinzon, a
literature professor, a personal letter can be an example of this. The recipient of the letter can be expected to really value the letter while her classmate
may not. Hence, this can't define literature as a whole.
Then, what really is literature? Many great critics have tried formulating a fixed definition of literature but have failed to do so. In the rise of every
possible definition of what literature is, counter arguments also rise.
Literature, though it seems impossible to enumerate everything it covers, play an important role in every individual's life. One can influence using
literature or be influenced by it. Examples of these are the novels made by our very own national hero, Jose Rizal – the Noli Me Tangeri and El
Filibusterismo. During his time, Rizal has

Essay Studying Literature
Contrary to students within other provinces, those in Ontario should study only Canadian literature in grade twelve English courses. Although there are
many existing writers in different cultures, it is important for Ontario students to first become familiar with Canadian literature before moving on. It is
believed that students should focus on their Canadian culture – despite being surrounded by other cultures– promote and establish their own writers,
and encourage younger Canadian authors. Pupils currently enrolled in English in Ontario are constantly bombarded by American culture, when they
should, instead, be concentrating on Canadian literature. This is starting to become a trend in Canada, as they have always been the "branch...show more

Although most teachers allow, and sometimes even encourage, students to focus on more modern Canadian books for their ISP, their classroom
experience is usually limited to studying these older generations of Canadian literature. Schools and educators should start to get students more familiar
with both past and present Canadian authors– this could lead any student to the path of becoming an author themselves. Another issue with Canadian
literature is that the authors are primarily white (English Canadian) and not reflective of our modern multicultural society. As Robertson Davies states,
2"Canada is not going to have a national literature in the mode of those European lands where a long history has bound the people together, and where
a homogeneous racial inheritance has given them a language, customs, and even a national dress of their own". We need to promote the work of
Canadian authors who have come from different backgroundsand who are able make a connection with our multicultural student body. As Canadians,
we are lost in a sea of international influences – we hardly know who we are and this happens many of us realizing it. 'What is a Canadian? A
Canadian is a fellow wearing English tweeds, a Hong Kong shirt and Spanish shoes, who sips Brazilian coffee sweetened with Philippine sugar from a

Example Of Reflection In Literature
In the span of this course, I have learned a great deal about myself in terms of literature. This course has enabled me to make many great strides in
my writing by exemplifying the works of authors and their literary devices. English 1102 has broadened my literary horizon by showing me more
elegant ways to express my opinion. I am remorseful towards the fact that I did not take the class in person. Inversely, I have learned better ways to
communicate towards the audience, through the use of various literary elements in lieu of going on tangents. In regards to taking English 1102, I feel
as though I am on the precipitous of progress through the use of parallel structure and diction as a way of getting my point across, as well as using
poetic styles from famous authors such as Charlotte Gilman to better express my thoughts and ideas. On the other hand, not being able to take the class
in person has disabled me in a sense of not being able to garner a better sense of grammar and punctuation. Furthermore, through the assignments that I
have completed, I have mastered the use of consistency which spurred on a more fluid line of communication with the readers through the use of
efficiently utilizing parallel structure and diction, instead of jumping from topic to topic. The need to spew all perspectives originates from my
predisposition of compacting conflicting opinions on one paper. Notably, employing parallel structure has brightened up my writing tremendously. For

The Importance Of English Literature
English Literature is what has allowed us humans to communicate properly and display our intended actions while talking, but on paper with a
wider vocabulary and symbols that represent pauses, questions, or showing passed tense or ownership properly when writing. I particularly dislike
literature as a subject in school, but I know that it is completely necessary, and for that I have a respect for it as a core class. Without it, not only
would I not be able to communicate correctly, but I also would not be able to understand other people 's writing either. Literature in general is
important to everyone else in the human species as well. Without it, it would be like the tower of babel from the bible everywhere all the time. In fact,

morals of the bible. Because of all that's in that book, it impacts my life more than probably anything. I'm a science wiz, especially when it comes

The Value of Literature
The Value of Literature The importance of literature cannot be underestimated in society past and present. Literature assists human beings in two very
distinct ways. First, literature helps the individual to imagine. The value of imagination absolutely cannot be underestimated. As J.K. Rowling once
said, "Imagination is not only the uniquely human capacity to envision that which is not, and therefore the fount of all invention and innovation. In it's
arguably most transformative and revelatory capacity, it is the power that enables us to empathize with humans whose experiences we have never
shared" (Harvardmagazine.com). Here, Rowling highlights two aspects of the most crucial importance of imagination: the ability to dream and the
ability to empathize. Imagination helps one to build worlds beyond one's immediate circumstances, crafting things that the monotony of everyday
existence cannot offer. This can be things as delightful as magic, sorcery, flying on broomsticks, being invisible, fighting evil monsters or other
journeys. Imagination can act as an instant time machine, taking one to the forefront of bitter battles of the Civil War or to the glamorous and roaring
twenties. For example, Christopher in the novel The Curious Case of the Dog in the Nighttime asserts "I find it difficult to imagine things which did not
happen to me" (Haddon, 5). This is a common issue for people and something which literature can correct. Imagination, essentially, opens doors in one's

Literature : The 21st Century
Connections – 21st Literature
The 21st Century, the time period that we all live in today, smothered in continuous social, economic and political issues. An interesting era for films
of this genre is the late 1930's to early 1940's which we see reflections in the literature today. War World 2 was a turning point in history and was a
time of sheer horror in many places such as Spain, Germany, Poland and Eastern Europe. In today's age, contemporary literature writers often draw
their inspiration and ideas from the writers that have gone before them. As a result, many works of 21st literature face the events and movements from
the past in order for them to make sense of the present. The two connections that are very apparent in all four of my texts are power and control and the
theme of hope. The way that each of these connections have been linked throughout the late 1930's time period based texts show how important they
are into understanding what is still happening in the 21st century. The texts that I have chosen to study are "The Book Thief", "Pan's Labyrinth", "The
Pianist" and "Defiance". The reason I have chosen to study these are to shed light onto why 21st century literature quite often seem to take ideas from
the past to help make sense for the future as "you have to know the past to understand the present."
As stated by James Meade "In the 1930's one was aware of two great evils – mass unemployment and the threat of war." The late 1930's was a time of

Defining Literature Essay
The definition of literature has been discussed and argued over time and there is no precise answer to be given. Any reader or author can define
literature as whatever they wish it to be defined as. This is more of an opinion of how one views certain pieces of work or writings and whether or
not they feel that is actually literature or not. Literature is any type of creative writing such as fiction or poetry, for example. Literature is also any
form of body of written works of language, which could be from the English era or even as far back as the Shakespearean or Elizabethan era. It is also
work from a specific period or culture defining key elements or somehow relating to and/or expressing how it is exactly from that time. The...show more

In her poem, "Dylan" in lines 4 and 5, she writes, "Her hair was a halo of warm light / and color dripped off her tongue" (23). The reader can
interpret just from those two lines the creativity and imagination not only in that one poem, but also in all poetry. The description of hair being a halo
of warm light allows the reader to use his or her own imagination to perceive that image in whichever way they would like. Creative writing can be
determined by many other things not only image or structure of how the poem is set into stanzas, but what is left up to the reader for interpretation.
Jewel writes in "Cautious" in lines 23–29, "an open vessel / whose function it was / to be filled / until my consciousness / could return and / spit out
/ the bad seeds" (18). After reading these lines the reader can be left with different feelings and emotions that vary from disgust or simplicity. This
is just another example of how poetry is creative writing. According to the American Heritage Dictionary, literature is defined as being the body of
written works of a language, period, or culture. An author of any specific type of writing or works can include certain details pertaining to language
or other details, which allow the reader to develop a sensory image of that specific period or culture. If the reader had no prior knowledge to the
language, period, or culture of the writing he or she would be reading, upon reading and analyzing

Literature in Life Essay
Literature in Life
Literature is the expressed influence of communities and the individuals in societies. Literature spans culture, beliefs, and attributes the necessary
component for corroborating how literature reflects, and portrays communities. The language from literature helps gives culture explanation of live in
different society. Literature that is defined by the culture aspect, gives details about such fascinating and affluent information or context. Certain works,
and words used in literature can help the reader understand and describe the sense of the community being read in the story. In addition, it is not
uncommon for people to write about an imaginary community that is based from their own community. Community...show more content...
Another example of how a community can affect an author's writing is illustrated in William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" (DiYanni, 2007, p. 79
–84).
The story takes place in the South after the Civil War. Faulkner's writing is extremely eloquent and deliberate. The time period also comes out through
the language in his writing referring to African–Americans as Negros and to Northerners as Yankees. It soon becomes obvious that Faulkner must have
been raised in the same time and place this story takes place. Communities do not only affect the language of the author but they also can provide the
community of the author's work. Some communities act like an extended family and an author may want to show that aspect. Sometimes an author
may wish to write about a close–knit community that knows everyone else's business. Often a writer will write about their community, illustrating
certain cultural aspects that they hold dear. All of these can be examples of the writer's community coming to life in their own stories. In "A Rose for
Emily," (DiYanni, 2007, p. 79–84) Faulkner shows us a community that is very involved with each other. They are constantly talking about what Miss
Emily does, what she says, and whom she sees. The author speaks for the

My Experience In Literature
I remember some of the first books I read as a child, before being introduced to the massive variety of literature that can be found everywhere. I
remember focusing on the images and drawings that the illustrators made which brought these stories to life. I remember most significantly the author,
Kevin Henkes, and his different interpretations on dealing with solitude as a child. I remember relating to the mice which he created within the stories.
I remember imagining myself within the books, hoping to join in on the endless adventures that the characters went on. I remember discovering my
growing interest in reading. I have never been someone who could get into a book without at first knowing what I am jumping into. The idea of
opening up a book, entering a world, not knowing what to expect, always deterred me. But, fictional reading to me, has always brought to me a
sense of curiosity, for it pushes me to discover almost an entire new life through the eyes of another. All throughout my childhood, my parents
encouraged me to read as much as possible, where there was never a time where we would not have a book checked out at the library near my
house. We would sit within the children's section of the library and just read. Whether reading Roald Dahl or R.L. Stine, I was pulled into a whole
nother world with each book that I read. It pushed me to imagine what I now see as impossible and almost pushed me out of the reality which I was
living in at the time. I began my

Essay on Discussing Literary Genre
To define genre is to embark on a conjectural journey within a theoretical minefield. Genre theory has drawn immense debate and contemplation
throughout literary history, however, several conclusions have emerged. Genre types are unfixed categories whose characteristics differ considerably
among the specific genres; furthermore, the role of literary history plays a significant role in discussions of genre, for genre types evolve and shift with
each new literary text. An approach to the discussion of genre, family resemblances, illustrates similar conventions among texts within a genre, but
there are significant problems in this approach. There are several ways to discuss genre, and although problems abound in any approach, the subjective

However, the problem of selection arises, for which texts can claim to be representative of a genre? Moreover, who decides the selection of these texts?
The consideration of specific characteristics in literature introduces problems regarding the classification of literary works. The choice of
characteristics taken into account is essential to the discussion of genre types . The characteristics of specific genres shift throughout history to
accommodate variations in the category that occur; the defining characteristics of a particular genre can alter so drastically that the preliminary era in a
new genre may not resemble the modern literary works in that genre. The works of Edgar Allan Poe, considered to be the father of the modern short
story, show the contrast between the classification of short fiction in the 19th century and today. Poe’s short story, “The
Murders in the Rue Morgue';, provides suspense and mystery; however, the story does not include the main character’s moment of
consciousness, the key ingredient in classifying modern short stories. Although “The Murders in the Rue Morgue'; does not entail a
moment of revelation, the story was regarded as short fiction in 1841. The contrast between early short fiction and the modern short story demonstrates
the varying qualities of the genre between its preliminary stages and the present, and shows the substantial transformation which occurred within the
genre.

What is Literature? Why Study Literature?
At often times, literature is thought of as lackluster works and long books and passages. People often think that literature is one thing, not knowing
that it is in actuality composed of several elements that we all use in our daily lives. In order to get a clear understanding of exactly what literature is,
we must first identify the definition.
According to Merriam– Webster, literature is defined as the body of written works produced in a particular language, country, or age; the body of
writings on a particular subject : printed matter. This definition however is a bit deceiving in truly understanding what literature really is. In the
dictionary definition of literature, it is constantly...show more content...
For example if people took time out to read and learn about other cultures, they will be able to get a better understanding of why people do things that
may be "different" in their culture but the norm in the culture of the other person. Human value helps us to understand that though, people all have the
same emotions; they can be expressed in different ways; if we learn how to interpret literature, we will have a better understanding of life, people and
their behaviors and have better social skills.
Thought values are our cognitive values that help us in making choices with clearly defined reasons. It helps us to explore multiple perspectives to
problem solving and knowing what fact from fiction is. For instance if a person goes through college without actually studying the literature set before
them, they may have the grade but not the ability to decipher "common sense" situations. We study literature to have the ability to consider situations
set before us and have a variety of approaches to resolve them, also to understand why people make the decisions that they make.
The idea of language values simply helps us to understand language and the use of words in everyday conversation. With literature we develop skills
for everyday conversation in the formulation of words and sentences and also for the gathering of information when

Essay on Why Read Literature?
Nothing teaches us better than literature to see, in ethnic and cultural differences, the richness of the human patrimony, and to prize those differences
as manifestation humanity's multi–faceted creativity. Reading good literature is an experience of pleasure, of course; but it is also an experience of
learning what and how we are, on our human integrity and our human imperfection, with our actions, our dreams, and our ghosts, alone and in a
relationship that link us to others, in our public image and in the secret recesses of our consciousness.
The bond that literature establishes among human beings compels them to enter into dialogue. The bond also makes them conscious of a...show more

Without reading and untouched by literature will resemble a community of mutes and those of lost expressions afflicted tremendous problems of
communication due to its crude and rude language. This is true for individuals, too. A person who does not read, or reads little, or reads only trash, is
a person who speaks much but he/she will say little words such as curse words, because his/her vocabulary is lacking in the means for self–expression.
Reading Literature is not only a verbal expression, but also represents a limitation on intellect and in imagination. It is a poverty of thought, for the
simple reason to grasp our knowledge and ask what is the importance of life? We learn how to speak correctly––and deeply and subtly–– from good
literature and only from good literature. No other discipline or branch of the arts can substitute for literature in crafting the language that people
need to communicate. To speak well, to have at one's disposal a rich and diverse language, to be able to find appropriate expression for every idea
and every emotion that we want to communicate, is to be better prepared to think, to teach, to learn, to converse, and also to fantasize, to dream, to
feel. In a secret way, words repeat in all our action, even

It is evident that literature strengthens perspectives and point of views on the real world. Additionally, it helps build critical thinking and writing skills.

literature. Literature provides new and valuable techniques that can heavily influence these skills for the better. Throughout the 4 years of literature in

Essay On Importance Of Literature
The importance of literature on today's society
In a rapidly developing world, the definition of literature goes beyond what the readers see and perceive. It provides a platform for us to open our
minds to ambiguities of meaning, while exploring what the world really has to offer through other cultures and beliefs. Most importantly, literature has
taught me to support my own point of view and trust my instincts and interpretations. The boundaries of literature are endless and holds no limit to
race, religion, culture, and sexuality. With an infinite amount of advantages, I believe literature is an integral component of our everyday lives as it
redefines text beyond the literal meaning, thus allowing us to connect with human emotions and surpassing self–defining barriers.
As an avid reader and enthusiastic writer, I have grown to learn that interpretation goes far beyond literal terms. The article "Why Study Literature",
emphasizes the importance of literature in our education system and everyday life. Michael Meyer's states that "[w]hile people will say what they
mean and mean what they say, [...] language in our world is [...] maddeningly and delightfully ambiguous" ("Why Literature" 1). Literature acts as a
medium of developing critical thinking skills, leading to independent learners and readers. If we limit a reader's interpretation of text, it restricts
creativity and the idea of being open to multiple analyses. An example of when this technique was applied was in my

What is Fiction: "Literature in the form of prose, especially novels, that describes imaginary events and people. Something that is invented or untrue"
(Oxford University Press, 2017).
Body Section/Main Points
1.0– Intellectual Development
1.1– Reading fiction improves vocabulary immensely. Literaryfiction uses a variety of different words because its main purpose is to paint imagery
and make the content engaging. Therefore, readers are exposed to words they would not see in non–fiction texts. This broadens their vocabulary by
exposing them to a plethora of new words, which aids in their writing and communication skills. It can also help us to "better understand new
information" (Sullivan, 2015).
1.1.1(Visual Aid)– I will refer to a graph that compares the vocabulary size of readers and non–readers of fiction. This will show the large difference
there is, and how beneficial it is to your intellectual development. Fiction readers had an average vocabulary size of 33,000 words, while non–readers
had an average of 19,000 (Seiter, 2015).
1.2– Reading fiction improves your memory.
1.2.1– In storylines there are multiple connecting characters and plot aspects. When reading fiction, you are forced to remember details about the story
as you read so that you can understand the story and put any necessary pieces together. This exercises the brain and helps improve memory because it
improves brain connectivity between tissues (Bergland, 2014).
2.0– Cognitive Capability

Self-Expression In Literature

  • 1. Self-Expression In Literature To me, self–expression is one of the most valuable things humans are able to experience. Being allowed to freely put your thoughts and feelings out into the world is such an incredible gift that many people seem to ignore or take for granted. Whether it be painting a picture to showcase your sentiments, writing a blogpost about something you're interested in, or dancing to music just because it feels good, expressing yourself creatively is an amazing thing that we are capable of doing, as we are able to beautifully and imaginatively portray our inner thoughts and emotions for ourselves and for others to see. The arts, such as literature, drawing, and music, has always played a very important role in my life, and has helped shaped me into the person I am today. Throughout my entire student career, English Language and Literature has always been my favorite subject. The shelves in my bedroom are filled with books that I've read and reread ever since 7th grade, as I was an avid reader growing up and would buy a new novel almost every week for me to enjoy. Reading has always been a favorite hobby of mine because being completely captivated with a story and feeling as if you were experiencing the events in the book yourself is incredibly fascinating to me. Moreover, I always enjoyed English class in school because the books we would be assigned to read were always very interesting, and I loved to write my thoughts and feelings about them. In middle school I even dreamt about Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. The Importance Of Fiction In Literature Reading fiction, in my experience, creates an unforgettable vivid mental image in my brain. In "Why Our Future Depends on Libraries, Reading and Daydreaming," Neil Gaiman asserts that reading fiction is vital for everyone. Fiction can lead to answers. It has the power to teach us lessons that plain non–fiction cannot. Moreover, fiction can improve our imagination. It can let us imagine things that are abnormal for common sense but beneficial for humankind. Perhaps most importantly, fiction can let us understand who we are. Therefore, allowing us to recognize our core strengths and weaknesses. I agree with Neil Gaiman's lecture that fiction is significant for children since not only did it help me in my childhood, it still helps me as I grow up. As has been noted, fiction is important since it has helped me solve problems, without fictional novels, I would not be who I am now. As a matter of fact, fiction has lead me to understanding English at a fast pace. On my arrival to Canada, I spoke English no better than a newborn child. The introduction of graphic novels have opened a new path of understanding for me, as Neil Gaiman mentions, fiction "forces you to learn new words" (Gaiman 2013) When I arrived to Canada, everything was foreign to me since I understood nothing and I had to learn a foreign language, and reading novels were difficult. Reading my first picked English novel, Amulet: The Stonekeeper boosted my confidence since it had a visual aspect to it and simple Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Its not simple as other essays it has different elements that needs to be taken care of and if they are not applied carefully whole essay gets affected. In this chapter we will explore those elements and conventions that are essential and must be there in a literature essay. The literature essay must consist of 5 essential elements that are : Tone Thesis Motive Evidence Coherent Structure Tone it's the base of any essay we can say like when we talk to our friends we talk in different tone and when we talk to our friends we talk in different tone. • 4. What Is Literature Essay Charmine J. Cramales BS Math II Lit 3 10:30 – 12:00 What is Literature? Poems, novels, and stories; these are some of the things that first came to my mind upon pondering on the question 'What is Literature?'. And just lately I have known that literature also includes songs, speeches, plays, and many others in written and spoken forms. I have also known that things that are produced out of creative imagination can be referred as literary works which are the ones that comprise literature. Considering this description of what literature is, the coverage of literature seems very puzzling. If literary works are those produced out of creative imagining, then it would directly point to fictional works. But then, there are also...show more content... Take for example the views of two individuals coming from different places on anovel based on the culture of one. It would likely be the same if their culture and beliefs are quiet related but if not, then they would surely have different understandings on certain parts of that novel. Hence, defining literature as those considered by people as 'literature' is questionable. Eagleton also associated literature as any kind of works which are valued highly by people. But then again, since people may have different perceptions on things, one may value highly a certain work while another person may consider it just as a plain writing. As stated by Ms. Pinzon, a literature professor, a personal letter can be an example of this. The recipient of the letter can be expected to really value the letter while her classmate may not. Hence, this can't define literature as a whole. Then, what really is literature? Many great critics have tried formulating a fixed definition of literature but have failed to do so. In the rise of every possible definition of what literature is, counter arguments also rise. Literature, though it seems impossible to enumerate everything it covers, play an important role in every individual's life. One can influence using literature or be influenced by it. Examples of these are the novels made by our very own national hero, Jose Rizal – the Noli Me Tangeri and El Filibusterismo. During his time, Rizal has

  • 6. Essay Studying Literature Contrary to students within other provinces, those in Ontario should study only Canadian literature in grade twelve English courses. Although there are many existing writers in different cultures, it is important for Ontario students to first become familiar with Canadian literature before moving on. It is believed that students should focus on their Canadian culture – despite being surrounded by other cultures– promote and establish their own writers, and encourage younger Canadian authors. Pupils currently enrolled in English in Ontario are constantly bombarded by American culture, when they should, instead, be concentrating on Canadian literature. This is starting to become a trend in Canada, as they have always been the "branch...show more content... Although most teachers allow, and sometimes even encourage, students to focus on more modern Canadian books for their ISP, their classroom experience is usually limited to studying these older generations of Canadian literature. Schools and educators should start to get students more familiar with both past and present Canadian authors– this could lead any student to the path of becoming an author themselves. Another issue with Canadian literature is that the authors are primarily white (English Canadian) and not reflective of our modern multicultural society. As Robertson Davies states, 2"Canada is not going to have a national literature in the mode of those European lands where a long history has bound the people together, and where a homogeneous racial inheritance has given them a language, customs, and even a national dress of their own". We need to promote the work of Canadian authors who have come from different backgroundsand who are able make a connection with our multicultural student body. As Canadians, we are lost in a sea of international influences – we hardly know who we are and this happens many of us realizing it. 'What is a Canadian? A Canadian is a fellow wearing English tweeds, a Hong Kong shirt and Spanish shoes, who sips Brazilian coffee sweetened with Philippine sugar from a Bavarian cup while nibbling Swiss cheese, sitting at a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Example Of Reflection In Literature In the span of this course, I have learned a great deal about myself in terms of literature. This course has enabled me to make many great strides in my writing by exemplifying the works of authors and their literary devices. English 1102 has broadened my literary horizon by showing me more elegant ways to express my opinion. I am remorseful towards the fact that I did not take the class in person. Inversely, I have learned better ways to communicate towards the audience, through the use of various literary elements in lieu of going on tangents. In regards to taking English 1102, I feel as though I am on the precipitous of progress through the use of parallel structure and diction as a way of getting my point across, as well as using poetic styles from famous authors such as Charlotte Gilman to better express my thoughts and ideas. On the other hand, not being able to take the class in person has disabled me in a sense of not being able to garner a better sense of grammar and punctuation. Furthermore, through the assignments that I have completed, I have mastered the use of consistency which spurred on a more fluid line of communication with the readers through the use of efficiently utilizing parallel structure and diction, instead of jumping from topic to topic. The need to spew all perspectives originates from my predisposition of compacting conflicting opinions on one paper. Notably, employing parallel structure has brightened up my writing tremendously. • 8. The Importance Of English Literature English Literature is what has allowed us humans to communicate properly and display our intended actions while talking, but on paper with a wider vocabulary and symbols that represent pauses, questions, or showing passed tense or ownership properly when writing. I particularly dislike literature as a subject in school, but I know that it is completely necessary, and for that I have a respect for it as a core class. Without it, not only would I not be able to communicate correctly, but I also would not be able to understand other people 's writing either. Literature in general is important to everyone else in the human species as well. Without it, it would be like the tower of babel from the bible everywhere all the time. I'm a science wiz, especially when it comes to animals because I study reptiles and amphibians (herpetology), so we argue a lot because he believes the world is only six thousand years old and has some explanation for everything, no matter how much it sounds like nonsense. He also doesn't believe in evolution. He doesn 't even believe in dinosaurs; he thinks they are just hybrids made from Nephilim, which are angels or demons that roamed the earth and then those Nephilim mated with animals. According to my dad, that hybrid would've mated with other hybrids with identical DNA (however that happened) and then they created a full new species. We debate all the time about everything. I won't give all my rebuttals in this essay because he isn't here to give his own rebuttal. • 9. The Value of Literature The Value of Literature The importance of literature cannot be underestimated in society past and present. Literature assists human beings in two very distinct ways. First, literature helps the individual to imagine. The value of imagination absolutely cannot be underestimated. As J.K. Rowling once said, "Imagination is not only the uniquely human capacity to envision that which is not, and therefore the fount of all invention and innovation. In it's arguably most transformative and revelatory capacity, it is the power that enables us to empathize with humans whose experiences we have never shared" (Harvardmagazine.com). Here, Rowling highlights two aspects of the most crucial importance of imagination: the ability to dream and the ability to empathize. Imagination helps one to build worlds beyond one's immediate circumstances, crafting things that the monotony of everyday existence cannot offer. This can be things as delightful as magic, sorcery, flying on broomsticks, being invisible, fighting evil monsters or other journeys. Imagination can act as an instant time machine, taking one to the forefront of bitter battles of the Civil War or to the glamorous and roaring twenties. For example, Christopher in the novel The Curious Case of the Dog in the Nighttime asserts "I find it difficult to imagine things which did not happen to me" (Haddon, 5). This is a common issue for people and something which literature can correct. Imagination, essentially, opens doors in one's Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Literature : The 21st Century Connections – 21st Literature The 21st Century, the time period that we all live in today, smothered in continuous social, economic and political issues. An interesting era for films of this genre is the late 1930's to early 1940's which we see reflections in the literature today. War World 2 was a turning point in history and was a time of sheer horror in many places such as Spain, Germany, Poland and Eastern Europe. In today's age, contemporary literature writers often draw their inspiration and ideas from the writers that have gone before them. As a result, many works of 21st literature face the events and movements from the past in order for them to make sense of the present. The two connections that are very apparent in all four of my texts are power and control and the theme of hope. The way that each of these connections have been linked throughout the late 1930's time period based texts show how important they are into understanding what is still happening in the 21st century. The texts that I have chosen to study are "The Book Thief", "Pan's Labyrinth", "The Pianist" and "Defiance". The reason I have chosen to study these are to shed light onto why 21st century literature quite often seem to take ideas from the past to help make sense for the future as "you have to know the past to understand the present." As stated by James Meade "In the 1930's one was aware of two great evils – mass unemployment and the threat of war." The late 1930's was a time of war, a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Defining Literature Essay The definition of literature has been discussed and argued over time and there is no precise answer to be given. Any reader or author can define literature as whatever they wish it to be defined as. This is more of an opinion of how one views certain pieces of work or writings and whether or not they feel that is actually literature or not. Literature is any type of creative writing such as fiction or poetry, for example. Literature is also any form of body of written works of language, which could be from the English era or even as far back as the Shakespearean or Elizabethan era. It is also work from a specific period or culture defining key elements or somehow relating to and/or expressing how it is exactly from that time. The...show more content... In her poem, "Dylan" in lines 4 and 5, she writes, "Her hair was a halo of warm light / and color dripped off her tongue" (23). The reader can interpret just from those two lines the creativity and imagination not only in that one poem, but also in all poetry. The description of hair being a halo of warm light allows the reader to use his or her own imagination to perceive that image in whichever way they would like. Creative writing can be determined by many other things not only image or structure of how the poem is set into stanzas, but what is left up to the reader for interpretation. Jewel writes in "Cautious" in lines 23–29, "an open vessel / whose function it was / to be filled / until my consciousness / could return and / spit out / the bad seeds" (18). After reading these lines the reader can be left with different feelings and emotions that vary from disgust or simplicity. This is just another example of how poetry is creative writing. According to the American Heritage Dictionary, literature is defined as being the body of written works of a language, period, or culture. An author of any specific type of writing or works can include certain details pertaining to language or other details, which allow the reader to develop a sensory image of that specific period or culture. If the reader had no prior knowledge to the language, period, or culture of the writing he or she would be reading, upon reading and analyzing Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Literature spans culture, beliefs, and attributes the necessary component for corroborating how literature reflects, and portrays communities. The language from literature helps gives culture explanation of live in different society. Literature that is defined by the culture aspect, gives details about such fascinating and affluent information or context. Certain works, and words used in literature can help the reader understand and describe the sense of the community being read in the story. In addition, it is not uncommon for people to write about an imaginary community that is based from their own community. Community...show more content... Another example of how a community can affect an author's writing is illustrated in William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" (DiYanni, 2007, p. 79 –84). The story takes place in the South after the Civil War. Faulkner's writing is extremely eloquent and deliberate. The time period also comes out through the language in his writing referring to African–Americans as Negros and to Northerners as Yankees. It soon becomes obvious that Faulkner must have been raised in the same time and place this story takes place. Communities do not only affect the language of the author but they also can provide the community of the author's work. Some communities act like an extended family and an author may want to show that aspect. Sometimes an author may wish to write about a close–knit community that knows everyone else's business. Often a writer will write about their community, illustrating certain cultural aspects that they hold dear. All of these can be examples of the writer's community coming to life in their own stories. In "A Rose for Emily," (DiYanni, 2007, p. 79–84) Faulkner shows us a community that is very involved with each other. They are constantly talking about what Miss Emily does, what she says, and whom she sees. The author speaks for the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

I remember focusing on the images and drawings that the illustrators made which brought these stories to life. I remember most significantly the author, Kevin Henkes, and his different interpretations on dealing with solitude as a child. I remember relating to the mice which he created within the stories. I remember imagining myself within the books, hoping to join in on the endless adventures that the characters went on. I remember discovering my growing interest in reading. I have never been someone who could get into a book without at first knowing what I am jumping into. The idea of opening up a book, entering a world, not knowing what to expect, always deterred me. But, fictional reading to me, has always brought to me a sense of curiosity, for it pushes me to discover almost an entire new life through the eyes of another. All throughout my childhood, my parents encouraged me to read as much as possible, where there was never a time where we would not have a book checked out at the library near my house. We would sit within the children's section of the library and just read. Whether reading Roald Dahl or R.L. Stine, I was pulled into a whole nother world with each book that I read. • 14. Essay on Discussing Literary Genre To define genre is to embark on a conjectural journey within a theoretical minefield. Genre theory has drawn immense debate and contemplation throughout literary history, however, several conclusions have emerged. Genre types are unfixed categories whose characteristics differ considerably among the specific genres; furthermore, the role of literary history plays a significant role in discussions of genre, for genre types evolve and shift with each new literary text. An approach to the discussion of genre, family resemblances, illustrates similar conventions among texts within a genre, but there are significant problems in this approach. There are several ways to discuss genre, and although problems abound in any approach, the subjective ...show more content... However, the problem of selection arises, for which texts can claim to be representative of a genre? Moreover, who decides the selection of these texts? The consideration of specific characteristics in literature introduces problems regarding the classification of literary works. The choice of characteristics taken into account is essential to the discussion of genre types . The characteristics of specific genres shift throughout history to accommodate variations in the category that occur; the defining characteristics of a particular genre can alter so drastically that the preliminary era in a new genre may not resemble the modern literary works in that genre. The works of Edgar Allan Poe, considered to be the father of the modern short story, show the contrast between the classification of short fiction in the 19th century and today. Poe’s short story, “The Murders in the Rue Morgue';, provides suspense and mystery; however, the story does not include the main character’s moment of consciousness, the key ingredient in classifying modern short stories. Although “The Murders in the Rue Morgue'; does not entail a moment of revelation, the story was regarded as short fiction in 1841. The contrast between early short fiction and the modern short story demonstrates the varying qualities of the genre between its preliminary stages and the present, and shows the substantial transformation which occurred within the genre. • 15. What is Literature? Why Study Literature? At often times, literature is thought of as lackluster works and long books and passages. People often think that literature is one thing, not knowing that it is in actuality composed of several elements that we all use in our daily lives. In order to get a clear understanding of exactly what literature is, we must first identify the definition. According to Merriam– Webster, literature is defined as the body of written works produced in a particular language, country, or age; the body of writings on a particular subject : printed matter. This definition however is a bit deceiving in truly understanding what literature really is. In the dictionary definition of literature, it is constantly...show more content... For example if people took time out to read and learn about other cultures, they will be able to get a better understanding of why people do things that may be "different" in their culture but the norm in the culture of the other person. Human value helps us to understand that though, people all have the same emotions; they can be expressed in different ways; if we learn how to interpret literature, we will have a better understanding of life, people and their behaviors and have better social skills. Thought values are our cognitive values that help us in making choices with clearly defined reasons. It helps us to explore multiple perspectives to problem solving and knowing what fact from fiction is. For instance if a person goes through college without actually studying the literature set before them, they may have the grade but not the ability to decipher "common sense" situations. We study literature to have the ability to consider situations set before us and have a variety of approaches to resolve them, also to understand why people make the decisions that they make. The idea of language values simply helps us to understand language and the use of words in everyday conversation. With literature we develop skills for everyday conversation in the formulation of words and sentences and also for the gathering of information when Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Essay on Why Read Literature? Nothing teaches us better than literature to see, in ethnic and cultural differences, the richness of the human patrimony, and to prize those differences as manifestation humanity's multi–faceted creativity. Reading good literature is an experience of pleasure, of course; but it is also an experience of learning what and how we are, on our human integrity and our human imperfection, with our actions, our dreams, and our ghosts, alone and in a relationship that link us to others, in our public image and in the secret recesses of our consciousness. The bond that literature establishes among human beings compels them to enter into dialogue. The bond also makes them conscious of a...show more content... This is true for individuals, too. A person who does not read, or reads little, or reads only trash, is a person who speaks much but he/she will say little words such as curse words, because his/her vocabulary is lacking in the means for self–expression. Reading Literature is not only a verbal expression, but also represents a limitation on intellect and in imagination. It is a poverty of thought, for the simple reason to grasp our knowledge and ask what is the importance of life? We learn how to speak correctly––and deeply and subtly–– from good literature and only from good literature. No other discipline or branch of the arts can substitute for literature in crafting the language that people need to communicate. To speak well, to have at one's disposal a rich and diverse language, to be able to find appropriate expression for every idea and every emotion that we want to communicate, is to be better prepared to think, to teach, to learn, to converse, and also to fantasize, to dream, to feel. Most importantly, literature has taught me to support my own point of view and trust my instincts and interpretations. The boundaries of literature are endless and holds no limit to race, religion, culture, and sexuality. This will show the large difference there is, and how beneficial it is to your intellectual development. Fiction readers had an average vocabulary size of 33,000 words, while non–readers had an average of 19,000 (Seiter, 2015). 1.2– Reading fiction improves your memory. 1.2.1– In storylines there are multiple connecting characters and plot aspects.
