1. Policies and Procedures Regarding Reconsideration of Resources
The Rudell School District supports the principles ofintellectual freedom and encourages a diverse
collection ofresources. Occasional objections may arise to material selected, even after careful
consideration. Any concerned districtresidentor employee may requestreconsideration ofmaterials.
The challenged material will remain in circulation during the reconsideration process.
If a parent, individual, or group has concerns regarding a resource, the following steps will be taken:
Informal Voicing ofConcern
1. Any concernsshouldfirstbe discussedwiththe pertinentparty BEFOREformallyrequesting
reconsiderationofmaterials. Inthe event that a viablesolutioncannotbecomprised, theindividual
receivingthe complaintwillreferthe patronto the librarymediaspecialist.
2. Thelibrarymediaspecialistwillexplaintheselectionproceduresandpolicies,discussingcriteria
usedto selectresources.
3. If the questionerstill wishesto file a formalrequestfor reconsiderationofthe resource,acopyof the
Requestfor ReconsiderationofMaterials form willbe providedfor the individualtofill out and return.

RequestforFormal Reconsideration
1. Uponthe receiptof a Request for ReconsiderationofMaterials form (whichmustbefilled out
completely,signed,anddated), the districtsuperintendentwillbenotifiedby the principalofthe
complaint.
2. TheLibraryAdvisory Committee(selectedbythe buildingprincipaland consistingofabuilding
administrator(whowillserve as Chairmanofthe Committee),acounselor,ateacherrepresenting
eachgradelevel, anda librarian)willreceivecopiesofor links to the material to read, listento, and/or

3. Professionalreviews of the work willbe obtainedfor the committeetoreference.
4. Within fifteen workingdays of receivingthecomplaint(unlesslengthdictatesamorereasonabletime
be determined),thecommitteewill:
i. review the material inits entirety
ii. consultreviews of the work
iii. explorethe educational significanceoftheresource
iv. considerthepotential of the resource forpromoting students’personalgrowthandlearning
v. report its recommendationstothe principal.(CombinationofTrentonHighSchool and

5. Theprincipalwillsendthesuperintendentandtheconcernedpartythe committee’sdecisionin
writingwith rationaleto supportthe decision.(CombinationofAthens HighSchoolandTrentonHigh
School)
6. If the personrequestingthe reconsiderationisdissatisfied,anappealcanbemadewithin5 days to
the superintendent,whowillmakea decisionafterconsultation withtheReconsiderationCommittee.
If a resolutionis not reached,theschoolboardwillmakethefinal decisionafterconsultationwiththe

7. When the finaldecisionhasbeenmaderegardingtheresource,thedecision willremainineffectfor4
years, duringwhichnofurther complaintsonthe materialwillbeconsidered. Theresultsof the
