September saw Streatham’s first Free Film
Festival happen after a mere seven weeks
planning- a fantastic achievement from the
team of volunteers who pulled it off. Films
played to packed crowds, with a variety of
venues all over Streatham hosting indoor
and outdoor screenings of gems such as
Grand Hotel Budapest outside at the British
Home, Dracula at Beacon Bingo, Amy at the
Hideaway, and Pulp Fiction at the Standard,
attracting visitors from all over London –blogs
such as Londonist, Skint London and Time
Out and a host of others were once again
focused on SW16. Can’t wait for next time-
you’ll hear all about it here!
We were sad to see the news that our large

Morrison’s store might be closing. Aside
from the only properly baked and butchered
right-there-in-the-store food at a supermarket
here, it’s the last big free parking space north
of Streatham Common remaining.
We’ve been to Funky Medusa for pedis
and haircuts, and to Rice Republic
and Hood for dinner this month, as
well as Trio Pizzeria for lunch,
and Café Barcelona, and Deli
Lama for coffee, cake, and
deli goodies-we personally
recommend them all. We also
had a great night out at The
Bull to celebrate Young’s 184th
birthday, enjoying the Burger
Shack burger and curly fries- and
enough drinkies to be unsure as to
our exact route back home afterwards. A
big thanks to Matt and his staff!
We were pleased to attend the inStreatham
BID (Business Improvement District) AGM
on the 22nd where the BID outlined their
work over the past year and future plans for
the High Road. The BID has successfully
secured funding for the High Road from the
Mayor of London’s New Homes Bonus fund
for local projects. Don’t forget to download
the Mi Streatham app for offers from local
businesses.
Good on David Salisbury-Jones and his team
at Vale Vets - a reader has commented
on what great service they give and
how lovely the staff are. It’s a
good feeling when we get great
feedback from you about our
advertisers!
We heard from many who
thoroughly enjoyed the
Streatham Society Henry
Tate Gardens tour. Read about
similarly wonderful historical
places right here under our noses
in the history piece on page 12. We
also visited 1930’s Pullman Court during
the London Open House weekend, and
were, yet again, amazed by the fascinating
architecture of our local area. Thanks to the
lovely residents who invited the public into
their beautiful homes.

NO PARKING!
Way back in Issue 3 of Heart Streatham we
featured John Rogers’ area analysis of the
lack of parking availability for shoppers on the
High Road, our main shopping district and
a major town centre in Lambeth. Our efforts
have been dealt two serious blows in the
past month: firstly Lidl has changed
their car park to be used only by
their customers only. Shortly after
that, we heard the news that the
large Morrisons next to Streatham
station will almost certainly close
within weeks.
The effect of these announcements
on parking is that for the 1.5 miles
stretch between The Greyhound Pub
and Westbury’s chemists (approximately
2/3rds of the inStreatham BID area) there will
be but two (2!) car parking spaces on the entire
western side of the High Road.
We would like to see three things happen:
Firstly, we would like to see Lambeth Council
and Transport for London work with Streatham
Action and the BID to identify “loading” bays
that could be converted to shoppers parking.
In breaking news: Louise Abbots of the
inStreatham BID has just told us she & Neil Salt
of Streatham Action attended a consultation
meeting on the 21st of September and have
raised this very point, so things are
happening on this front!
Secondly, we call on Lambeth
Council and the inStreatham BID
quickly to identify and lobby a
suitable tenant for the Morrison's
site. It would fit Waitrose’s store
format perfectly, and Primark, Aldi,
or TK Maxx would work well there.
Finally we all need to contact Lidl UK
Corporate Headquarters in Wimbledon
deploring their change of policy and poor
stewardship of the only shoppers car park in
central Streatham. Contact them at: Lidl UK
GmbH, 19 Worple Road, Wimbledon, London,
SW19 4JS or 0370 444 1234 or customer.

UNCOOPERATIVE BUREAUCRACY
It doesn’t seem possible to have watched
the news in the past year and not hear of
the UK’s childhood obesity epidemic. Given
the surge in computer games, tablet/mobile
use and the usual distractions like television
keeping children from being active, local
groups of unpaid volunteers have stepped up
and organised sports activities for the shared
benefit of the participants as well as the wider
community.
We covered one of these in depth in our
last issue – the Fun Run around Streatham
Common. This was to feature a competition
between teams from local primary and (for the
first time) secondary school children to win
a considerable pot of money for their school
sponsored by our advertiser, Anthony Gold
Solicitors.
You’ll appreciate our surprise when we heard,
after going to press, that the Fun Run and cross
country race had to be cancelled. You’ll despair
when you hear it was down to bureaucracy.
The Lambeth press office quoted the councillor
in charge, “Event protocols have been in place
since 2011 and clearly state that we need a
minimum of three months’ notice to properly
assess and plan for any particular event.”
We spoke to Herne Hill Harrier's club secretary
who said this is the first time this policy
has been invoked in connection with this
event in the five years they have run it on
Streatham Common. Interestingly also, the
club could not set a date and apply for use
of the Common within the three month time
frame anyway, as UK Athletics fixtures aren’t
set until approximately six weeks before the
time the race normally happens. Thus the
protocol could not (and has never previously
been required to) be met in any case. So,
Bureaucracy 1 – Community 0. It seems
the children will have to organise their own
activities now and those hundreds of shoppers
that would have spent money in Streatham
that weekend will now do so elsewhere. Are
we the only ones that think this is bonkers?

Streatham Hero
Jono Openshaw, Streatham Fitness First’s
General Manager completed the Deloitte
Ride Across Britain (RAB) in September as
he continues raising funds for Cancer
Research UK.
The event took over 9 days,
cycling a total of over 970 miles
starting at Lands End on the 4th
September and concluding at
John O’Groats in Scotland on the
13th September.
Asked why he entered such an event,
Jono explained he started with open
water swimming events in 2011 as something
small that he could do to help the charitable
cause after his sister was diagnosed with
stage 4 cancer and went through chemo &
radiotherapy, but luckily survived the cancer
and treatment and happily now lives with the
side effects of the treatment. His numerous
swim events that year and personally raising
money led him to qualify to swim the Irish
Sea with celebrities like Ronan Keating in The
Swim which raised over £250,000 for Cancer
Research UK.
Jono (a prop forward for the last 10 years
& rugby Chairman for past 3), enjoyed the
challenge & raising charitable funds, so
got the bug and then wanted to challenge
himself more & raise more funds, so entered
a half Ironman in 2012 which spurred him
onto entering a full Ironman in 2013. Injury
prevented the 2013 event, but after rehabbing
himself - in 2015, he swam the English
Channel in July in a team relay qualifying
as the fastest 4 person mixed relay team to
cross the channel in just over 10 hours. Jono
then cycled the RAB Lands End to John
O’Groats event this September. He pays for
all the events himself and has personally
raised over £3,000 for Cancer Research and
vows to continue looking at new ways of
supporting the charity.
In Jono’s role at Streatham’s Fitness First,
he loves to help anyone with any events they
may want to do, so feel free to book a trial
day at the club and ask to speak with Jono if
you want any help in setting a challenge for
yourself or ideas on raising funds for
charity. He says he is happy to help
with any initiatives that will help
anyone train more and achieve
more. To use a phrase from
Threshold Sports who arranged
the Deloitte RAB event “More is in
You”. So; what’s next?

The Women's Institute in England
and Wales finally became 100
on Wednesday 16th September
2015. To celebrate Streatham
WI chose to have a meal at
a Streatham Institution (not
quite 100 years old though),
Mrs Wong's. Many members
had been before, with a variety
of stories to tell about their
experiences but the number of
"first timers" was significant and
included me.
We were 22 members in the
restaurant's top room. The
room in itself was pretty plain
and brightly lit, but because
Streatham WI were the only
occupants the atmosphere
was fantastic. We had correctly
been instructed that it is a
BYO restaurant and we were
provided with glasses suitable
for whatever drink we brought
(though this was only tested with
beer and wine so I'm not sure
what would have happened if we
had been more adventurous and
rocked up with Babycham.) We
were not charged corkage and
were supplied with water glasses
and jugs of water as often as we
asked for them.
The food was a really pleasant
surprise to me, I am not
particularly keen on Chinese food, but started
with duck pancakes and moved on to chicken
chow mein. Many of us shared the duck to
start but some other starters were thoroughly
enjoyed, including squid. There was some
sharing of dishes for the main course and when
one member asked about the lack of vegetarian
options the chef made her a dish of her choice
and selection of ingredients.
I am not sure what the rest of the diners
downstairs would have thought when we sang
Jerusalem at the end of our
celebrations, but the amazingly
patient waiter was totally un-
fazed and happily took photos for
us with the same patience and
kindness he had shown us all
evening.
This is certainly somewhere I
would go back to with a large
group of friends again especially
because the bill was very
reasonable, reflecting the lack of
alcohol on it. All of our members
were very happy with their
choices of food, and impressed
that we were all served at
the same time and the waiter
remembered all 22 of our orders
correctly, clearly an experienced
man. The restaurant also offers
a take-away service via customer
collection.
Streatham WI has been very
busy this month with a tea party
to celebrate the Queen becoming
our longest reigning monarch,
managing to celebrate in style
despite being weary from a
late night the previous evening
watching the film "calendar
girls" together to celebrate our
fantastic Institution being 100.
Mrs Wong's meal was followed
by our (very popular) monthly
wine club on the third Wednesday of the month
and some of our members celebrated the
centenary with a garden party at Painshill Park
and a lecture at Portcullis House.
Along with the usual craft and book clubs, darts
and Greenwich trip we have been representing
Streatham in style and some of us are ever so
slightly feeling every one of the 100 years we are
celebrating!

Streatham's Historical Heritage
by Graham Gower
For centuries the people of Streatham worked
the land, but within little more than a decade
Streatham was pushed into modern times as a
London suburb and metropolitan area by the time
of Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee. However,
reminders of the ancient Surrey village remain.
Fieldend Road, Stockfield Road, Wellfield
Road, Hitherfield Road, and Pathfield Road all
signal our agrarian past. Greyswood Road and
Abbottswood Road recall the ancient woodlands,
while those living in Woodbourne, Fallsbrook or
Strathbrook Roads may not realise they live over
our lost streams and watercourses. Property
boundaries, road patterns and pathways that
have fossilised the lines and shapes of the
old farms, meadows, lines of woodland and
hedgerows which are long gone.
Streatham Common and the Tooting Commons
are remnants of the old Surrey countryside, and
have been cared for by generations of Streatham
people. More recent treasures such as the Grade
Two nature reserve, Unigate Wood and the
Rookery recall times before suburbanisation.
Pass through the Rookery to see the only
surviving field in Streatham, on the far side of
which, an important ditch snakes its way through
the undergrowth, an ancient boundary line dating
to Saxon times, marking the boundary between
Lambeth and Croydon as it has for centuries.
Our old village green is the small open space
between the High Road and Mitcham Lane.
Ancient footpaths around Streatham, such as
Russell’s Footpath, survive between back garden
fences - paths which once passed by grazing
animals and open meadowland.
Our local heritage assets help give Streatham its
particular identity, and a sense of place, and we
must cherish them.

Thrale Alms-houses Update
by PAuL LeHMAnn
Earlier in the year, I wrote about the Thrale
Charity’s project to redevelop the Thrale
Alms-houses in Polworth Road, which
had become very outdated. I’m delighted
that after two years on site and £3million,
the redevelopment work is completed, 17
residents have moved into their new homes,
and in mid-October, we will be celebrating the
reopening of the alms-houses with local MP
Chuka Umunna
The alms-houses are open to women over
60 from the local area, and our aim is to
promote independent living with dignity while
fostering a sense of community to combat
the danger of loneliness. At the heart of the
new development is a peaceful, enclosed,
communal garden. We have kept the
attractive 1930s buildings surrounding it, but
enlarged them and modernised the interiors.
Two new wings have been designed to blend
in with the older buildings. Most importantly,
we have been able to increase the number
of homes from nine to 17, including two
designed for women with limited mobility.
Residents have come from all around the
local area. We are delighted that two of
the women who lived at Thrale before the
redevelopment decided to return after a spell
of living elsewhere in Lambeth while the
works were going on. We provide secure
homes to those who have experienced
difficulty or distress in their lives, and we are
pleased that some of our residents have been
referred to us from Spires, Age UK Lambeth
and Lambeth Council.
We have a lot of people to thank – the
previous residents who have returned, for
enduring a long period away from their
homes, all those who have advised us on
the project, our neighbours in Polworth
Road, and the GLA for contributing around
£700,000 towards the project.
The Thrale charity does more than manage
the alms-houses – it also gives grants to
organisations in Streatham and the local
area that are dedicated to helping people
who are in need, hardship or distress. Our
beneficiaries include Lambeth Mencap,
Emmaus and the Nehemiah Project and we
have just started inviting applications for this
year’s round of grants.
Grants of up to £5,000 are available. You
don’t have to be a well-known charity
to apply; we’re keen to hear from small
community organisations as well. If you are
interested in applying for a grant or in finding
out more about Thrale, please email info@

A Night to Remember –
14th November
Saturday 14th November marks
53 years of bingo at the Streatham
Hill Theatre. To celebrate, the
club is holding a party with Free
for All bingo session, complete
with bubbly and red carpet
reception, gifts, and special guest
performances. In honour of the
theatre's opening in 1929, the club
will fuse Las Vegas style casino
chic with a retro London feel, and a
few old school bingo surprises to
delight new and regular members
alike.
Join us on the red carpet from
6pm, where you can have your
photograph taken in the beautiful
grand entrance hall. Take a spin
on the classic roulette wheel while
sipping a dirty martini as you wait for your
bingo session to begin, followed by special
guest entertainment from 10pm.
Bingo will begin promptly at 7:30pm, with
over £2000 of prize money on offer for the
night, including a top prize of £500 cash to a
single winner. Membership is free and can be
completed on the night, but please be aware
that guests that appear under 25 will be asked
for photo ID before being allowed entry.
A truly grand experience for one night only
in the magnificent surroundings of the old
Streatham Hill Theatre to celebrate the history
of bingo in Streatham.
An iconic, Grade II listed building since 1994,
Streatham Hill Theatre survived bombing
during WW2, and retains many of its original
features, including the stunning entrance hall,
complete with crystal chandelier and ornate
ceiling.
Following the changes to the 2005 Gambling
Act and the introduction of the smoking
ban in England, the bingo industry suffered,
with clubs throughout South London forced
to close due to dwindling attendances and
lack of investment. It was fully expected that
Streatham would suffer the same fate until
the acquisition by Praesepe PLC
under the name of Beacon Bingo
in 2009 secured a short term future
at least. They retained the aesthetic
charm of the building while they
invested heavily behind the scenes
in structural work and electrical
updating.
Despite running at a loss for
several years, the club remains
operational, standing stubbornly in
the spirit of the building, despite
the constant spectre of closure
that plagues so many other
similar businesses. Just one
look southbound on the A23
shows the potential fate awaiting
the old theatre as Megabowl is
demolished, brick by brick, to be
replaced by the tide of progress.
Beacon Bingo has invited in the wider
community, and actively seeks to take part
in local events, hosting art theatre shows
during the Streatham Festival over the last few
years. Last month saw Bela Lugosi return to
draw a crowd to the Theatre, albeit on screen
as the sinister Count Dracula during Streatham
Free Film Festival.
Last year the club offered unprecedented
access to hidden areas of the building with
the Streatham Theatre Company’s Halloween
Tours. By popular demand, they return on
October 30th 31st, with a focus on occult
author Dennis Wheatley’s “The Devil Rides
Back” with exclusive access to areas which
have not been seen by the public for decades.
It is a testament to the members and team at
the club to continue and thrive, with the will to
preserve the building and offer a “home away
from home” to the 1200 members that visit
every week. Where once stood a crowd of
bingo halls in the south, few remain, and none
with the charm or history of this incredible
building. Please come and celebrate with us
on this unforgettable night.

Ice Hockey in Streatham
by JuLeS cLiFF
If you live in or around
Streatham, you're probably
familiar with the Streatham Ice
and Leisure Centre on the High
Road. What you may not be aware
of is Streatham’s long-standing
association with the action-packed sport
of ice hockey.
Ice hockey has been in the local blood since
the Streatham team was first established in
1932. Streatham Redskins is the oldest ice
hockey club in the UK, and has graced the top
tier of the sport for many years. Until recently
they battled for survival, as the decaying state
of the old Streatham rink made progression on
the ice and ability to build a larger fan base off
it almost impossible. Now, with the new rink,
the club and the sport are going from strength
to strength.
Ice hockey at Streatham is for everyone,
whether player or spectator. Alongside our
iconic senior team the Streatham Redskins,
the ice arena also plays host to the Streatham
Youth Ice Hockey Club, Streatham Storm
women’s team, plus two recreational hockey
teams, the Night Wolves and the Chiefs, as
well as the Werewolves of London disability ice
hockey club.
Looking very much the swish professional
outfit, Streatham Redskins is essentially run
by a core of hard working passionate folk
who simply love the game. The club relies
on a small army of volunteers,
including goal judges, leaflet
distributors, and ticket and
programme/merchandise sellers.
All in support of an incredibly
talented bunch of players who do
Streatham proud week in, week out with
their commitment and passion for the team.
Streatham Redskins are currently playing in
the National Ice Hockey League Division 1
and the 15/16 squad is shaping up to be quite
the force to be reckoned with. New signings
over the summer include ex GB International
Nick Chinn who will be taking on a player/
coach role alongside head coach and former
Streatham player Warren Rost, together with
Chris Wiggins, transferring from the Premier
League’s Milton Keynes Lightening.
They are joined by two new signings from last
season’s league winning Chelmsford side,
Michael Ranby and Ryan Giles and new Czech
import Kamil Kinkor.
Long standing Streatham favourites Joe
Johnston (Captain) and David Carr will also
be lining up with a strong core of players from
last season keen to make the fans proud and
bring home some silverware at the end of the
season.
The team finished a creditable 3rd in the league
last season, and continues to draw more fans
to home games, usually between three and
four hundred, but with a 1000 seat arena,

there's plenty of room for more, and whether
on your own or with a group, you will be very
welcome. We have a special offer to entice you
in over half term too!
What you’ll find is that ice hockey grabs
you and reels you in. Before you know it
you’re cheering and chanting Streatham!
Streatham! along with everyone else and
suddenly it matters. There's some great
hollering for the Redskins, drums, trumpets,
and music when there's a score, spectacular
tumble or a sin-binning.
As we go to press, Streatham Redskins are
at the top of the league having won their first
three games of the season. Streatham is very
proud of its fine ice hockey heritage – please
come, be part of the excitement, and watch the
season unfold.
Upcoming home fixtures are
Saturday 3 October – Invicta Dynamos
Sunday 4 October – Bracknell Hornets
Saturday 10 October – Chelmsford Chieftains
Sunday 18 October – London Raiders
Saturday 24 October – Wightlink Raiders
Sunday 1 November – Oxford City Stars
Saturday 7 November – Invicta Dynamos
Saturday games start at 5.30pm and Sunday

Ticket prices £10 Adult, £6 Concessions
(armed forces, blue light services, NHS staff,

Beginners Guide to Ice Hockey
• The game is preceded by introductions of the
players followed by the National Anthem
• Games are divided into three 20-minute
periods with a break of 15 minutes between
each.
• The game begins with a face-off between two
players from opposing sides at the centre of
the ice.
• The objective is to get the puck into the
opposition’s net as many times as possible.
• Generally each team comprises between 15
and 20 players. 1 goalie and 5 other players
are allowed on the ice at any time.
• If a player is sent from the ice for a minor
penalty they must spend time in the penalty
box for a set number of minutes leaving their
team shorthanded whilst the opposition is
on the powerplay.
• The player may return to the ice if the
opposing team scores a goal during the
penalty or once the penalty is over.
• Players line up at the end to shake hands,
man of the match is announced for each
team and the players skate around the rink in
appreciation of the support.

Running Brigstock Skin and Laser I’m often
considering ways to enhance natural
beauty. Interestingly one of the best
ways is to simply put a smile on
your face. Research suggests
laughing and a positive
attitude is actually good for
your health. So don’t worry
about laughther lines. In any
case crease wrinkles on a
furrowed brow are trickier to
treat than laughter lines.
It is really so strange to consider
that a positive attitude can affect your
health? One particular study has shown
that if you always expect the worst you’re
25% more likely to die before the age of
65. Studies conducted in the 80s and 90s
have also revealed that your brain and
immune system are connected through
neurotransmitters, and it is also now thought
that your psychological health and moods are
effected by the health of your gut. Lining your
stomach is a network of neurons, similar to
your brain. This network has been called “the
little brain” and is thought to be linked to the
brain in your skull though the vagus nerves,
which influence your emotional state.
We all know stress is bad for your health. As
well as elevating your blood pressure, stress
weakens your immune system. Other studies
have also shown that it increases low-level
inflammation associated with a whole host
of chronic diseases. All this suggests that
simply being happy and lowering your stress
levels will improve your health.
So how do you become happier? Well you
could consider a laughter club or laughter
yoga. Dr Madan Kataria’s Laughter Yoga
incorporates a series of exercises that enable
you to laugh without the need for jokes.

The Good Salon Guide
by Lee ALLey
Several years ago Greyhound Lane awoke
one day to a splash of colour that promised
something new, fresh and exciting. A brightly
coloured, hand-drawn sign announced Funky
Medusa had come to Streatham. Urban
motifs with a luxury spa and top-of-the-range
beauty services were now here and bringing
the best products and treatments from the
City and the West End to our bit of south
London.
Owner Donna Borg brought together the
talents of some top hair technicians and
beauty therapists she knew in a mix of
elegance and calm with a crazy funky vibe
to suit the inner goddess in a way that's
affordable to local people on a budget.
As a local girl, Donna believes strongly in
supporting the community and giving our
youngsters an opportunity to learn a trade. In
addition to thorough in house training Donna
sends them to one of the best West End
academies for top end technical skills.
This ethos extends to carefully selected
products such as Devines and Ella Baché,
but also choices to soften the environmental
footprint such as disposable, bio-degradable
towels. These provide a fresh clean towel
for every customer without harming the
environment.
We've spoken to a range of their customers,
including professional women and men
as well as two small children about their
experiences. One theme that recurs is that
the staff talk customers through exactly
what they will do, what they are doing at the
moment and what will be done next so there
are never surprises and the customers get the
service they expect.
Donna emphasises “Funky Medusa is all
about you. We don’t just listen, we hear. You
enter as a client, but leave as a friend.”

South Bank UTC - Engineering Students’ Futures
South Bank Engineering UTC will be a
new arrival on the educational scene in
Lambeth. Opening in Brixton in 2016, the
UTC will deliver a specialist curriculum with
an engineering specialism to students aged
14-19. According to Dan Cundy, the Principal
Designate, ‘there is a very real skills gap in
the engineering sector, particularly in London.
Major employers are desperate for young
people with the right type of skills, with
high value careers in engineering available’.
With specialisms in medical engineering
and engineering for building, South Bank
Engineering UTC is sponsored by London
South Bank University along with major
engineering firms and two local NHS Trusts.
The sponsors are working with the UTC
to create real-world employer challenges,
developed to boost students’ employability
as well as their specialist understanding.
The UTC is part of a £30million building
programme, and will boast specialist
equipment and facilities including robotics,
advanced computing and 3D printing not
normally available to schools. The curriculum
will be academic but hands-on, embracing
advanced technologies in a business-like
environment. UTC leavers are likely to follow
pathways into university, apprenticeships
or employment, often with sponsors and
partners. Student recruitment has started
now, with a very limited number of places
into Years 10 and 12 open for September
2016, with Founder privileges being offered
to students currently in Years 9 and 11 who
apply before the end of October.
Open events are now taking place (including
at Streatham Library on 3rd October-
southbank-utc.co.uk), with an opportunity to
meet the Principal and the team. Visitors to
the open events are also entered into a draw
to win a smart watch.

1934 shortly after Streatham Hill Theatre opened.
It is rumoured that the theatre was built over a very
auspicious site for devil worship, and that there
have been some very spooky goings on there.
This behind the scenes tour hopes to spread some
light into the darkness…or maybe the other way
round!? This is a theatrical performance where
anything might happen! You must be 18 or over
to attend due to licensing restrictions. You will be
entering non-public and unused areas of this listed
building and must be able to climb stairs..

Your local neighbourhood
police officers have been
concentrating on the three
main policing objectives
as set by your Ward Panel
Leads: combating and offering
preventative advice in relation
to burglary, combating and
offering preventative advice
in relation to theft of, or from,
motor vehicles, and tackling
anti-social behaviour in
general and more specifically
in relation to licensing Issues.
The Streatham Wells and St.
Leonards Team carried out a
number of warrants resulting
in arrests and charges, and
one individual has already
received a custodial sentence.
Our teams helped stop a
known burglar in Streatham
Wells, who was also wanted
for another burglary and is at
present awaiting trial.
The Streatham High Road
BID Officers followed up
this good work of the ward
officers, visiting local pawn
shops to stop selling on
of believed- stolen goods.
Additionally our officers have
brought the Metropolitan
Police “MET Trace System”,
property marking to areas
of persistent burglaries. This
project has had success in
other boroughs and is being
offered in three areas of
Lambeth.
PS Will Morton and his
Streatham Hill team are
tackling motor vehicle crime.
They have launched Operation
Teal targeting theft of, and
from, motor vehicles. But we
need your help. Think about
what you leave in your car
on show: is it something a
thief would want? One less
thing left on show could mean
one less crime and one less
conversation with insurance
companies.
A change in rosters means
later finishes on Fridays and
Saturdays, so the teams
have focused on issues
with licensed premises and
drunkenness. I have personally
been out in the area including
Streatham High Road and
Streatham South speaking
to publicans to ensure they
understand the new Lambeth
Licensing Policy. We are
receiving a good reception,
and our visits are backed up
with test purchases for under
age sales by our trading
standards partners.

teams are doing please visit.
