2. Who we are
• Time to Change is a national movement run by
Mind and Rethink Mental Illness working to
change how we all think and act about mental
health problems
• Birmingham has been successful in securing a
local Time to Change Hub that allows us to
challenge stigma and discrimination in the city.
3. Why we’re here
• Attitudes of others relating to mental health stop
people getting help and support
• Too many people are made to feel isolated,
ashamed and worthless
• We want everyone to be free of fear and have
equal opportunities
• We believe Birmingham can be more open
4. Why we’re here
88% of people using mental health services
experienced discrimination
60% of people said that stigma and discrimination
are as damaging or more damaging than the
symptoms of their mental health problem
27% said stigma had made them want to give up on
life
5. • +15% willingness to live with someone with a mental health
problem (up to 72%)
• +11% willingness to work with someone with a mental health
problem (up to 80%).
• +10% willingness to live nearby to someone with a mental
health problem (up to 82%)
• +6% willingness to continue a relationship with a friend who
had a mental health problem (up to 89%).
National impact on behaviour
6. • To continue Improving public attitudes and behaviour towards
people with mental health problems.
• Reduce the amount of discrimination that people with mental
health problems report in their personal relationships, their social
lives and at work.
• Make sure even more people with mental health problems can take
action to challenge stigma and discrimination in their
communities, in workplaces, in schools and on-line.
• Create a sustainable campaign that will continue in communities
and workplaces long into the future.
