This was my group project in my Master's at the University of Windsor. This project was guided by Dr. Colin Novak on the subject of Noise, Vibration, and Harshness.

TESTING

3. LISTENING ENVIRONMENT
ROOM STANDARDS:
It is recommended to conduct listening
evaluations using loudspeakers, attached to;
1. Room Size and Shape,
2. Reflections and Reverberations and
3. Room Modes as per the AES standards.
And loudspeaker arrangements 1. Location,
2. Distance from Listener also to AES
Standard.
ENVIRONMENTAL NOISES:
The room where testing takes place should
be free from noise and other environmental
sounds such as fan or computer noise. ANSI
S3.1 defines octave and one-third octave
band noise levels for audiometric test rooms.
APPEARANCE:
The room should look as simple as possible
and should be encouraging for the subject to
enter the room with encouragement.
AIR CIRCULATION, TEMPERATURE
AND HUMIDITY:
The listening territory ought to be cooled at
72° to 75° F. Construction materials used in
the facility should be non odorous.
4. SAMPLE PREPARATION
Good recording practices are dictated when preparing sound
samples to be used in any jury test of “real” product sounds.
Adequately prepared samples do not ensure a successful
investigation, yet poorly recorded or edited sound samples can
ruin an otherwise valid test.
Measurement (recording) variation not due to instrumentation
changes should be controlled as closely as possible. Examples of
factors that influence the perception and measurement results of a
recording are room acoustics direction and distance to the sound
source.
It is important to have procedures in place that require
consistent transducer placement, whether artificial head or
microphone, so that consistent measurements are made.
5. TEST PREPARATION
Similar conditions should opt for all tests. For instance, if recording
espresso brewers, similar beans should utilize, a similar beginning
water temperature, a similar cup, and so on.
All jury individuals should provide the control of the sounds and self
paced test. Which means jury individuals can play the sound as many
time as they wants.
The test length should be the same and must not be too long that would
tire the subjects and affect the results. Maximum length is 30 Min to 45
Min in general.
The last part of preparation and conveyance is the cautious conveyance
of any exceptional directions required by the subjects to acquire great
information without biasing the jury accidentally.
6. EQUIPMENTS
DURING TEST
MICROPHONES: The receivers utilized for the jury
testing ought to stay the same for all the example
accounts and the settings for the chronicle should not
change, for the reason to wipe out any error. For better
recording experience and near to natural duplicating of
the recording purpose, a dummy with a binaural
dummy with microphones is used.
BINAURAL HEADPHONES: Binaural headphones
with good quality will provide the subject with a better
experience with the sample sound and it will provide a
near-natural experience for the subject to judge, which
will help to increase the overall efficiency of the
results.
7. EXPERIMENTAL SETUP PROCEDURE
JURY SELECTION:
WHEN SELECTING A JURY, IT IS VITAL TO STAY
THE END-USER IN MIND. IF YOU WERE ON A
BIKE EXHAUST ENGINEERING TEAM, YOU
WOULD PROBABLY WANT TO ASSEMBLE
JURORS WHO OWN MOTORCYCLES OR WHO
HAVE AN INTEREST IN PURCHASING A BIKE.
YOU WOULD NOT HAVE ANY DESIRE TO
SETTLE ON AN ATTENDANT WHO WOKEN UP
EACH MORNING BY HIS NEIGHBOR IS FIRING UP
BIKE MOTOR.
JURY OBJECTIVES:
PROCEEDING WITH THE BIKE MODEL, IF THE
MEMBERS OF THE JURY REQUESTED TO
"RATE THIS CRUISER FOR ENERGY" VERSUS
"RATE THIS BIKE FOR EXTRAVAGANCE",
VARIOUS OUTCOMES WILL YIELD. THEY
SHOULD BE JUDGE WITHOUT BEING BIASED
FROM BY INTEREST OR PRESSURE.
JURY TRAINING:
ONCE THE JURY IS GATHERED, THEY ARE
REQUIRED TO BE TRAINED. THEY MUST
UNDERSTAND THE SOFTWARE BECAUSE THE
KINDS OF THE SOUNDS THEY ARE GOING TO
HEAR. THE JURY ARE REQUIRED TO
OPERATE THE SOFTWARE EASILY AND
COMFORTABLY.
9. CONNECTION BETWEEN COMPUTER
AND JURY
After performing the jury test, the sound preferences known as subjectively. In the subsequent stage,
target sound measurement esteems will be determined and related to the abstract outcomes. For each
example, the abstract consequences of the jury test are classified just as the target metric qualities. The
emotional jury inclination can be plotted against the target measurements to check whether a solid
connection exists
Metrics that connected with preference (like loudness and fluctuation strength) can be included in the
golden equation. Metrics that not connected with preference (like sharpness and tonality) should not be
included in the golden equation. Utilize the R^2 incentive to decide whether there is a connection
between a measurement and the jury's inclination.
Through Regression analysis, it is possible to determine the relationship between all of the metrics and
the jury preference
