1. NARRATIVE STRUCTURES
MULTI-STRANDED NARRATIVES
A multi-strandednarrativeisthe twoor more perspectivesof asimilar/identical timelineorstory.In
my musicvideo,Iwill adaptthistoshowthe alternative viewpointsof the male andfemale
characters inthe brokenrelationship.Todothis,I will piece the footagetogetherinpost-production
to emphasise the twosides,havingthemshow one afteranother.Overlaysandparallel editingare
othertechniquesthatcanbe usedtocreate this effect.Aswell asthis,colourgradingwill be keyin
settingthe twonarrativesapart – witha lightermore euphoriccolouringforthe flashbackshots,a
darkerand more earthytone for the shotsof the male and thenmore realisticandraw gradingfor
the shotsof the female.These three setsof gradingwill depictamulti-strandednarrative which
allowsthe audience toinferandengage withthe thoughtsof eachcharacter,beingvisually
representedusingpostproduction.
ENIGMA
A lessconfirmativeenigmawillbe prominentthroughoutthe video. Withthe enigmabeingthe
importance of the NewtonsCradle.The Cradle will overall actasa metaphorforthe story and
timelineof eventsinthe relationshipsrockytracks.Initially,inhe firstfew shots,the audiencewillbe
presentedwiththe Cradle.The cradle will be setbythe male characterand will thenfollow the beat
of the song.The Cradle will thenbe presentedduringthe videoand thenwill be stoppedatthe end
of the video.Withagreat lackof significance tothe story/lyricsanddetachmentfromthe video,it
will be consideredanenigmaforthe viewers.Withgreatentitlementfromthe audience todecide
on whatthismotif means,the actual representationisthatactionshave consequences –and the
more significant the auctions,the greaterthe consequence.Forexample,if one ball isdropped,one
ball iselevated,if twoare dropped,twoare elevated,etc…Thisenigmawillalsocarryconnotations
of control (possessedbythe male character, andan ideaof structure – inferringthateventslikethe
one presentedare supposedtohappen.
FLASHBACKS AND NON-LINEARNARRATIVES
Flashbacksare clipsof previousevents/backgroundinformationtogive the viewersawider
understandingof the story.Flashbackswill be usedin mymusicvideotoparallel the joyful timesand
timesof distress.Regardingthe ideaof a non-linearnarrative,the onlycompliancetoa chronological
timelineisthe lipsynctothe track. The story however,will be editedtoshow alternate sidesof the
story. Althoughthiscouldinitiallycause the videotoseemconfusing,itactuallyaddsamore
dynamicapproach.
