This document discusses different text and typography styles and their effectiveness for a documentary project. It focuses on a black background with white text as representing binary opposites and linking to the narrative perspective of looking at the past and present. It also discusses taking inspiration from the music video "The Days" by using typography techniques like a typewriter effect sliding banner and rewinding text to represent themes in the documentary like telling lies and forgetting the past. The documentary follows the narrator's mother's childhood and invites the audience to reflect on their own upbringing.

These three text
styles are the most
effective however I
believe the black
background and
white writing is the
most effective style
as it represents
binary opposites and
further links to the
narrative perspective
of the documentary
in the way that the
documentary looks
at the past and the
present
I am going to animate the text of my title and subtitles by making each letter type
across the page using a typewriter effect in final cut on the Apple Mac computers. I
want the text to stand out therefore I may change the background to white and write
the text in white however the text will look almost like a stencil by a black rectangle
over the text, the text will therefore look as if the writing has been stencilled.
2. The days (lyric video)
Avicii
Directed by Jesper Eriksson.
In this music video; a spray paint artist used stencils to print the words of the song onto a
large white wall. The contrast of white and black is striking and is a representation of binary
opposites, there is an element of sophistication and I really like the music videos use of
typography it is different and the technique is not normally used. I specifically liked the
cinematography that looked at the typography from the spray painters POV as well as
rewinding parts of footage so that the spray paint vanished from the template suggesting the
word has been disintegrated. This symbol can be linked to my own documentary in the way
that I look at the past and how it has affected my mum. I have chosen to take inspiration from
this video by develop the typography for the title of my documentary by looking at different
colour schemes; highlighting the title of my documentary and looking at how shadows effect
the perception of text. I have chosen to use a sliding banner over the text and a typewritter
effect to travel across the screen suggesting the title of the documentary is emerging onto the
screen. The technique can also be linked to my mum’s childhood and how she felt like an
outsider and unnoticed lies are also a continuous motif throughout the documentary and in
this music video the use of rewinding the close up camera shots of spraying some words
could also represent telling lies or trying to forget the past which is why I believe my nan
didn’t want to tell my mum about her sister, she felt that she had a new life and it was maybe
too painful for her to relive it by talking about her children she abandoned. The documentary
follows my mum’s narrative as she tells the audience about her childhood. The documentary
is personal and invites the audience to look at their own childhood.
