1. Nurse-family partnership (NFP)- This program has positive outcomes on obstetrical health
and psychosocial functions of mothers. The program has helped reduce the rates of child
abuse and neglect by helping out young parents learn effective parenting skills and helping
them be able to deal with a variety of issues. According to their website,
http://www.nursefamilypartnership.org/ they focus on vulnerable first time mothers and
their children and help them until the child reaches two years old by building relationships
and confidence. They visit with the mothers once a month for the first two years of the
child’s life. According to the book on page 381, the program has helped reduce the arrest
and conviction rate by 54% and 69% in the 15 year olds who participated in this program
when they were first born. They also say that they have 58% less sexual partners as well.
It also goes to show that the RAND Corporation says that by the time they reach 15, the
savings have reached four times the original cost and helps reduce crime, welfare
expenditures and health care costs.
2. Project Toward No Drug Abuse (Project TND)- This is a school based initiative that is
designed to help high school youth from the ages of 14 to 19 resist substance abuse.
Basically the course consists of twelve 40-50 minute lessons conducted over four weeks
that include many motivational activities, social skills training, and decision making using
a variety of different means. The program offers detailed information to students about the
consequences socially and physical to them due to drug use, instructions for cognitive
motivation enhancement activities to avoid drug use and their misconceptions; it also
addresses active listening skills, effective communication skills, stress management,
coping skills, tobacco cessation classes and self-control. These courses can either be self-
taught or ran by a health professor. According to the book, on page 384, this program can
help significantly reduce hard drug and alcohol use among high school students.
