Task 2
1. Unit 27
Task 2 – Performance Strengths and
Areas for Improvement
2. Strength 1/4
• Excellence Trait: Accuracy
• Accuracy is the ability to be precise and in terms of football, the target is
the goal and therefore strikers should be able to be as precise as possible
when aiming and shooting at the goal. Accuracy is particularly important
for those like Harry who play the position of a striker as they have to try
and hit this target in order to be successful in scoring. A disadvantage for
Harry is that when he doesn’t score he tends to get very frustrated and
this has a negative effect on the other players. This then leads to him
losing confidence and therefore has a snowball effect upon his accuracy.
However, as a striker it is only appropriate that a coach chooses a player
that has good accuracy in order to have a good ratio of scoring to missing.
A strength for Harry is that he does seem to have a successful rate of goals
scored to goals missed, which is what the team wants in order to win
consecutive games. His accuracy also goes hand in hand with his speed
because more thought is able to be done as he is able to run out his
opponents to the goal. This resulting in more precision in his shot as
opposed to being under pressure and rushing the shot.

disadvantages
3. Strength 2/4
• Excellence Trait: Body composition
• Body composition is a percentage of fat, bone and muscle ratio. It is important that
an athlete has a low percentage of fat, this is prominent in football has high levels
of fat can effect a players aerobic endurance, speed etc. These are key areas for
footballers to be successful therefore this will have a negative impact on Harry’s
overall performance as a striker. It is important that a striker especially has a good
ratio of body fat and muscle due to the speed that is required to run to receive a
ball in the box and out run the defense. A particular strength for Harry is his good
ratio of muscle which seemed to make it easier for him to jump higher, this is great
for a striker in terms of a corner jump as this will make it easier for him to get his
head to the ball and be successful with a goal. I could see this with Harry that he
had a good body composition as he had a lot of power behind the ball when he
made shots at the goal. Overall I think that body composition is important as it is
always key to know your ratio of muscle to fat as this can highlight whether or not
your strength and power can be improved to generally increase you level of
performance as an athlete.

4. Strength 3/4
• Excellence Trait: Teamwork
• Teamwork is the ability for a group of people to work together to achieve
common goal and objectives. Teamwork is important because it allows
goals to be reached in an efficient and timely method and it combines
many different skills from many people, allowing achievements to be
made that could not be made alone. On the coach profile wheel my
subject rated themselves as a 9 and I rated them as 8. Teamwork is an
important quality of an individual in a game of football, which means it is
very good to have it as strength. Good teamwork consists of a variety of
factors but three of the main ones are communication, balance and
leadership. A strength that I noticed in Harry his ability to coach the team
well from his position and really encourage them, therefore I feel that
teamwork won’t be an area of concern to focus on. If the football team or
my subject did not work together well, there is less chance that it will
result in a win. This is because the game of football does not allow any
individual to operate independently for long periods of time. The team
must cooperate to attack, defend and score goals.

5. Strength 4/4
• Excellence Trait: Speed
• Speed is the rate somebody travels at between two points, and this can
also be how quickly a body part moves. Both of these are vital for football
as the first one will enable them to get to the ball and the second will
allow the force behind the ball when making a shot on target. Throughout
the testing stage, this has always been a strength for Harry. Speed for a
footballer is very important especially a striker because having speed will
give more chance of out running his opponent when heading for the goal,
it also means he can have more time to assess his target. My subject rated
themselves as 7 and I rated them as an 8. When assessing my subject,
them having speed as strength was very important when it comes to
football as the game involved being fast as the player needed to be able to
keep up the pace of the game. A strength of Harry’s was being able to
keep up with his opponents and he has kept this up throughout. However,
by not having speed this could result in the opposite of this, which would
be not being able to stick with the opponent when defending as well as
not being able to get away from the opposition when attacking.

6. Development Area 1/4
• Excellence Trait: Control of anxiety
• Control of anxiety mean to disregard factors such as fear and hesitation
and focus on the game. I noticed as a disadvantage that Harry wasn’t able
to stay 100% focused in a game situation and often dropped his head due
to a bad shot. Not being able to stay focused may hinder his chances in
being successful in his trials to be on the team for next year. He could
consider talking to his team about easing his anxiety by the midfielders for
example; supporting him more on the pitch for the first few games. I rated
Harry as a 5 and the coach rated him as a 6. Controlling anxiety can be
very tough for a player especially when they have people watching them
play and they have to impress the coach and not let the team down. For
Harry, it is important that he controls his anxiety because if he gets
nervous he is less likely to make any shots at all, let alone them being on
target. There is little time to change your mind when on the pitch and if he
does change his mind he could get hurt in a tackle. He should definitely
work on this for the future.

7. Development Area 2/4
• Excellence Trait: Confidence
• Confidence is trusting in your capability to do things. Having
confidence is very important to an athlete as they need to make
specific decisions which they need to be confident about,
confidence enables them to attempt challenging tasks which is
important in football because it’s these tasks which are most
important, such as; attempting a hard through ball or taking on a
man which leads to a goal. After watching my subject play in a
game of football I rated them as 5 on the coach profile wheel and
the coach said 6. In a game of football, confidence is important as a
quality as it is confidence that helps your reaction time and
decision-making. For example, making quick decisions takes
confidence, as it is important to make the right pass. This is
particularly important for my player as he is a striker and it is vital
that he has the confidence in himself to make the runs for the ball
and make a shot on target.

8. Development Area 3/4
• Excellence Trait: Reaction time
• After the performance profiling, I found that reaction time was one of Harry’s
weaknesses. Reaction time is the speed in which you can respond to a stimulus.
This is a big problem for a striker as having a quick reaction time can be the
difference between scoring a goal and missing it. With Harry only being in his first
year, having a better reaction time can be the difference between getting picked
for the second team or being dropped. Having poor reaction time really affects a
game of football as it is a very fast paced game. Having this quality as a weakness
means the time it takes for this individual to process and then decide on a action
to follow up with is quite a long period of time in comparison to someone who has
good reactions. When assessing my subject I thought that their reaction time and
decision making was fairly average and could have been improved. A delay in a
game of football often ends negatively. Reactions and decision making is
important, as the game requires a lot of fast movements so because of my subject
not having a good reaction time, for example; it could slow everything down and
cause mistakes. A disadvantage for Harry was sometimes he missed the
opportunity to get to the ball first when it was being passed from a distance. He
also didn’t react quicker enough for some of shots not made on target.

9. Development Area 4/4
• Excellence Trait: Footwork
• In football, footwork is the ability to be able to control the ball effectively and use
other skills to get around opponents. It is also used in tackling. I scored my subject
a 5 with their footwork and they scored themselves an 8. This is quite a big
difference in the understanding of their level of play as footwork is one of the
main rules within a game of football. When watching my subject play I saw on a
few occasions that there were times were their footwork was not good which
slowed down the pace of the game. Because of the fact that I rated them a 5 and
they rated themselves an 8, I would choose footwork as something to work on
particularly. A disadvantage was that he often kicked the ball too far in front of him
and although he is fast, this often resulted in him losing control of the ball.
Another disadvantage was that he often took too many touches before shooting
which meant that the shot was often blocked, also his opponents were able to
tackle him quicker then they would have if he had just made the shot. This is
definitely something that we will work on as in my opinion it is key for a striker to
be successful. By working on this it could help improve his confidence in his ability
to score goals.
