1. Unit 27
Task 2 – Performance Strengths and
Areas for Improvement
2. Strength 1/4
• Excellence Trait: Speed
• Describe / Explain / Critically Analyse:
Speed is the distanced covered in a certain amount of time. In rugby this is very important
as wingers need to be able to have speed to make runs. After looking through the
performer profiling I have decided that speed is one of Alice’s strengths. The speed that she
is able to create really helps her in her game and allow her to run past opposition players to
avoid being caught up or tackled. In a game situation where she may be open for a free run
where she just needs to not get caught up is where she will excel in and will be able to get
past the opposition and score the try needed. Using her speed allows her to enhance her
overall performance so that she is able to run past opposition players or catch up with
opposition players or use it to create a lot of power for a good tackle on an opposition
player. This will give the team an advantage on the wing as she is able to score try's quite
often from this position as maybe being the one that cuts inside for the last pass etc. I
believe that speed is a very important strength to have in rugby as it allows her to run past
players, catch up with players and create a lot of power for tackles against maybe bigger
players, as previously stated and it is for these reasons why I believe speed is so important
in the winger position in rugby.
Describe: Give a detailed account of something
Explain: Give a detailed account to give the meaning of something with reasons. Include the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of the topic of interest
Critically Analyse: Give your opinion of the subject of interest – consider all of the evidence and then write about both the advantages and
disadvantages
3. Strength 2/4
• Excellence Trait: Concentration
• Describe / Explain / Critically Analyse:
Concentration is a really important aspect, concentration is where she is able to still be in
control of what she is doing and do it well while under pressure. In rugby this is very
important as all players need to be able to concentrate to be able to give the correct pass.
After looking through the performer profiling I have decided that concentration is one of
Alice’s strengths. Her strength to be able to make crucial tackles and passes in important
moments of the game are so important as a rugby player under pressure. In a game
situation where she has to make a tackle on her opposite to stop the opposition from
winning in the final moments of the game is why concentration is a good strength to have.
Using her strength allows her to enhance her overall performance as she is able to do things
in the game properly and not end up fluffing the chances that she gets throughout the
match. This gives her team a better advantage as she isn’t going to make many mistakes
during her game. I believe that this strength is very important as in rugby games are lost
from little mistakes and that is why it is so important to be able to avoid making these
mistakes and help her team out to winning matches by possibly giving match winning
passes.

disadvantages
4. Strength 3/4
• Excellence Trait: Confidence
• Describe / Explain / Critically Analyse:
Confidence is having the ability to have faith in there own ability to complete a set task. In
rugby this is important as all players need to have good confidence to be able to play at
there best. After looking at Alice’s profiling I have decided that confidence is one of the
strengths that she has is confidence. Her confidence is shown throughout the game where
she is able to take on opposition players where if she wasn’t confident she may have passed
it. In a game situation where she has a one on one to the try line where she can pass it or
take the player on she will make the correct decision through the confidence of what she is
doing, if she is confident to pass it she will, she wont be undecided which can make her lose
possession or get tackled. Using her confidence enhances her overall confidence so that she
is able to always make decisions and know what she is going to do next so that she isn't
ever in a undecided phase where she will be viable to losing the ball. It also allows her team
to have faith in her and pass to her and know she will be making the correct decisions on
the ball. I believe that confidence is a very important strength in rugby or any sport as it
allows the player to be decided and know exactly what they are doing as, previously stated,
being undecided can make you lose the ball a lot easier.

Critically Analyse: Give your opinion of the subject of interest – consider all of the evidence and then write about both the advantages and

5. Strength 4/4
• Excellence Trait: Strength
• Describe / Explain / Critically Analyse:
Strength is how much your muscles can exert force by contracting against
resistance. In rugby this is very important as all players need to be able to use
force against your opponents. After looking through the performer profiling I
have decided that strength is one of Alice’s strengths. Her strength in her legs
and core are shown throughout her game and really do give her the balance
and strength to run past opposition players. In a game situation where she
may be slightly pushed she is able to withhold the push and keep running due
to her core body strength keeping her balanced. Using her strength allows
her to enhance her overall performance so that she can hold the ball of
opposition players so they don’t have an easy tackle to make on her, this
allows her team to have a better advantage while going forward so she is
more likely to get further into the oppositions half and get closer to that try
line. I believe that strength is a very important strength in rugby as it allows
her to keep the ball for longer and make more runs with going further and
also allows her to make the tackles necessary for her team not to concede.

6. Development Area 1/4
• Excellence Trait: Aerobic fitness.
• Describe / Explain / Critically Analyse:
Aerobic fitness is how long someone can give there full amount effort for during a game. In
rugby this is very important as it allows the player to keep up a constant and consistent
level of fitness where the player can give the best they can. After looking through the
performer profiling I have decided that aerobic fitness is one of Alice’s strong weaknesses,
her weakness in this trait means that she isn’t able to play at her best throughout the whole
game as she wont have the aerobic endurance to be able to carry it out through the whole
game. In a game situation where games are changed in the dying minutes she may well lose
the game for the team for not making a tackle due to her not being fit enough and not
scoring a try as she wasn’t able to make the run. Not being able to use her aerobic fitness
meant that she isn’t able to enhance her overall performance through the game as she will
start to get worse as the game goes on so she will be likely to not to as well. I believe that
aerobic endurance is a very important trait in rugby so I believe that she will need to keep
playing at the best she can be through the whole match so that she won’t be letting the
team down.

7. Development Area 2/4
• Excellence Trait: Knowing your strengths
• Describe / Explain / Critically Analyse:
Knowing your strengths is where you know what you are good at in the game, this is
important because it allows you to improve in areas where you aren't as good and get even
better at what you are good at. In rugby this is important because it allows the performer to
carry things out with confidence and to know what the performer can and cant do, if she
knows she isn't good with skill then she shouldn’t try it so that’s why this is one of her
development areas. After looking through the performer profiling I have decided that Alice
and the Coach and I thought that Alice wasn’t good at knowing her strengths so this is really
bad for in game situations as it will mean she may think she’s better than what she is so
instead of playing it safe she may try something like skill which may lose her the possession
as she isn't good at it. Not being able to know her strengths means that she wont be able to
enhance her overall performance through the game as she will be making poor decisions
throughout the game which can affect her confidence and her team mates and the whole
game itself. I believe that knowing your strengths is a very important trait in rugby as it is
simple errors from not doing something properly that can flip the game on its head as
rugby is usually quite a tight game so little points that are between it can affect the
outcome of the game.

8. Development Area 3/4
• Excellence Trait: Knowing your opposition
• Describe / Explain / Critically Analyse:
This is where you are able to look at the other team and see what there weaknesses are
and what their strengths are to be able to out perform them in the game. In rugby this is
important because it allows the player to know how they can exploit the opposition and
give there team an advantage. After looking through the performer profiling I have decided
that knowing your opposition is one of the traits that Alice will need to work on as her not
being good at this means that she isn't able to take advantage on the other team by
knowing if her opposite is slow or not or if they are clumsy, bad at tackling as all of these
little improvements that can change the game. An example would be that if she knew her
opposite was slow she could keep on putting runs to try get past them as she knows they
wont be able to keep up with her giving her a big advantage. Not being able to know her
opposition very will means she isn't able to enhance her overall performance and it means
that she isn't able to take advantage on opposition facts which means she wont be able to
have a good game as she may not know her opposite is really quick so she will be working
this out during the game which will mean she wont have that initial advantage. I believe
that knowing your opposition is a very important trait as it allows the player to be able to
give the team the best chance of winning the game as possible and that’s why this is such
an important trait to have.

disadvantages
9. Development Area 4/4
• Excellence Trait: Tactics
• Describe / Explain / Critically Analyse:
Having tactics is where you know what you will do in the game, if you are going to do a run
straight or a cutting run in during the game to confuse the opposition to get a better
advantage against the other team. In rugby this is where she will be able win games from
doing tactics together as a team or on her own and this is where she can get a advantage
on the other team. After looking at her performer profiling I have decided that tactics is one
of Alice’s strong weaknesses , her weakness in the trait means that she isn’t able to use
tactics to outwit the opposition so her game is quite standard and she may be very easy to
predict making her an easy target for the opposition. In a game where the other team know
what she does already they will be able to pin her and mark her down with ease and not be
able to take advantage of the fact that she can alter her game with tactics.
Not being able to use her tactics given by the coach very well will mean she isn’t able to
enhance her overall performance through the game as she will not be able to switch up
what she does with the team.I believe that tactics are a very important trait in rugby as I
believe that having tactics is another big game changer in being able to try and win the
game, change the game and make something out of the game to be able to win.
