Costume analysis: Jacket
One of the costumes I chose for my magazine project was a jacket which fits in
with the hip hop theme because a range of artist wear it. A jacket makes the
artist looks good and sophisticated, although the clothing type is informal but
for hip hop it would be considered normal. Different colours would change the
artists appearance and personality because different colours send different
moods, for example red suggests anger where as a light blue would suggests
calmness. A different material of the jacket will also send a message to the
viewers because if the artist is wearing a leather or animal fur jacket, viewers
who believe that fur is bad will express hatred to the artist and to the magazine
company compared to if the artist whore a another material jacket.
Another costume that is commonly worn by hip hop artists are vests
which will make the viewers seem easily connected to the artist due to
being familiar with the dress code because it is commonly worn in the
hip hop scene. A hip hop artist wearing a vest makes usually hidden
tattoos visible to the public which shows more of what the hip hop
artist is like because tattoo tend to express the artists views which
makes the viewer gain a certain perception of who they think they are.
Also a vest makes the artist show more of their body, especially there
arms, so if the artist is physically strong they can show there muscles
which will make it look like they are boasting but also will attract
certain viewers to read the magazine.
Costume analysis: Vest
A high range of hip hop artists also wear jumpers which is used to hide
and cover most of the artists top half of the body. To the viewers if a
hip hop artist is wearing a jumper it could suggest that the artist wants
to be comfortable due to sweatshirts material usually being soft and
having a nice feel. A hip hop artist wearing a sweatshirts could also
make the viewer think that the artist wants to look good and he wants
to give off a informal look which makes the artist fit in with the hip hop
genre because the clothing is commonly worn by many hip hop artists.
Also a large majority of viewers can relate to the artist when they are
wearing hoodies because it suggests that hip hop artist are just like any
other people who also like to feel relax.
