1. Painting walls or changing wallpaper has a big part in how your place
appears or how you want to change the way you feel about it.
Removing wallpaper is the first part.
It’s not that hard but also there is not one single method to remove your
wallpaper. Your wallpaper can be old, traditional, peelable, or Strippable,
thus the method depends upon the type.
Mentioned below are 5 methods along with one preparation method
which obviously goes with all methods.

STEP 1: Preparations for
removal
2. We’ll just start by moving all the furniture either from the room or placing
it in the Center (of the room). And remove the stuff (if any) hanged on
the wall like photo frames, ornaments, clocks, etc.
Then cover all the surfaces like floor, moldings, trim and also the
electrical outlets.
You can cover the floor with a pre-taped plastic drop cloth to protect it
from the water and other liquids we will use for taking off the wallpaper.
It’s very easy to place and clean with the pre-taped plastic drop cloth.
Shut off the electricity and also remove the outlet cover. As you should
remove some wallpaper under that outlet cover.
Simple to-dos:
• Shut off the Power & Remove furniture
• Remove any hangings on the wall
• Remove all outlets’ covers
• Cover the floor
• Cover moldings, trims, and outlets

3. STEP 2: What kind of wall is behind
Wallpaper
Why?
Because if it’s Drywall you should be careful not to be too hard on it or
you can damage your wall. Drywall is delicate than Plaster, therefore be
careful while scraping and avoid soaking it wet with any liquid.
How to know?
Drywall if:
• Sound hallow when knocked
• Feel softer when pin pushed in
• Doesn’t crack
• Perfectly smooth
• Have outlet wiring in the electric box
• Usually in an older home (50+ years)
4. • Cardboard surface
• Placed with nails on the frame
And Plaster if: don’t show above-mentioned signs.
All the ways to determine your wall type have been mentioned. If sound
hallow it’s drywall but make sure you knock it at different spots because
it will sound dull where there are studs behind it and will sound hollow at
other places. Whereas plaster sounds the same when knocked from all
the sides.
Also when a pin or nail is pushed (at some unnoticeable spot) it will feel
softer than plaster. If the wall doesn’t have any cracks anywhere it’s
most probably drywall, because plaster walls usually do have cracks
moving in different directions.
Checking out the electric box by removing the switch cover plate from
the outlet is also a great way to be sure. With drywall, you will see wires
enclosed in the electric box and no lath (obviously) will be there when
the cover plate will be removed.
STEP 3: Determine wallpaper
Type
5. Checking your wallpaper type first can save you a lot of extra effort.
Lose a corner from the bottom of the wallpaper with a putty knife or a
taping knife. Then try to pull the corner to take the wallpaper off the wall
carefully,
• If it comes off easily without tearing then it is strippable. Strippable is the easiest
wallpaper to remove.
• If only the top layer peels off and the backing is left behind on wall then it
is Peelable wallpaper.
• If it’s difficult to peel or doesn’t give way at all then it’s Traditional wallpaper.
STEP 4: Choose a Method and
take off Wallpaper
1) Universal Method (If you don’t know the
exact type of your wallpaper)
6. THINGS YOU WILL NEED:
1. Water
2. Scraper (if not use putty or taping knife)
3. Paint roller/ Spray bottle
4. Scoring tool (perforator)
5. wallpaper removal solvent/ Vinegar/ Laundry softener
6. Liquid dishwasher/ soap
Okay, let get started!
HOW TO’s:
Obviously, by now you had already covered all furniture and floor which
is Step 1.
• Now if your wallpaper is old, it might already be hanging from few spots, even if
not. Just try to scrape the wallpaper as much as you can easily.
• Use the scoring tool in circles to create holes so that wallpaper removal solvent
can get to the back surface of the wallpaper when applied.
• After scoring, prepare wallpaper removal solvent as per the manufacturer’s
instruction. But if you don’t have the removal solvent, you can use vinegar and
water in a 50/50 ratio OR Laundry softener in 25% (softener) and 75% water
solution.
7. • Apply the liquid with either a paint roller or with a spray bottle. Let it absorb a bit
for few minutes and then remove it. (Try to apply solution and remove 3×3 area
at a time and then move to the next 3 feet section.)
• Clean the wall, whatever paste left behind with a mixture of warm water and
liquid dishwasher/ liquid soap (though the dishwasher is better) with a sponge.
2) Traditional wallpaper Method (For
traditional & Old Wallpaper)
The traditional wallpaper is usually the toughest to take off from the
walls. The Universal Method mentioned above is for traditional, therefore
will work for the rest types as well.
THINGS YOU WILL NEED:
SAME AS FOR UNIVERSAL METHOD
8. HOW TO’s:
SAME AS FOR UNIVERSAL METHOD
3) Strippable Wallpaper Method (For
strippable Wallpaper)
It the easiest to remove but if for some reason it doesn’t, just try
the Universal Method mentioned above.
THINGS YOU WILL NEED:
• Scraper (if not use putty or taping knife)
• Liquid dishwasher/ soap
HOW TO’s:
9. • Just try to peel off a corner, if can’t do it with your bare hands use Scraper.
• Try to take it off by pulling it away slowly, without tearing the wallpaper.
• Repeat the process until you are done.
• Clean the walls with warm water having liquid dishwasher mixed in it using a
sponge.
(As said earlier, if your Strippable wallpaper is stubborn or if it’s just a
tough patch you can use Universal Method Or can simply try to remove it
with a razor knife.)
4) Peelable Wallpaper Method (For Peelable
wallpaper)
Peelable wallpaper is consists of two layers. The top layer is easy to
remove without any special effort but to remove the backing of the
peelable it takes a bit of effort.
10. Actually, after removing the top layer of the peelable wallpaper you have
to repeat the Universal Method, which actually works for every
wallpaper.
[Note: Remember not to leave the backing of Peelable on the wall even if
it’s in great condition.]
THINGS YOU WILL NEED:
a) Water
b) Scraper (if not use putty or taping knife)
c) Paint roller/ Spray bottle
d) Scoring tool (perforator)
e) liquid stripper concentrate/ Vinegar/ Laundry softener
f) Liquid dishwasher/ soap
HOW TO’s:
• Just lose a corner of the wallpaper and try to pull it off.
• Gradually you will take all the top layer off and all that will be left is the backing of
the peelable wallpaper.
• For the backing repeat the Universal Method process.
5) Steamer Method (When nothing works)
11. If your wallpaper isn’t leaving its place even after trying everything, now
is the time for Steamer Method.
A steamer is a machine that uses water steam to loosen the wallpaper
(glue) from the wall. Along with being most effective, using a steamer for
the first time can be dangerous, thus proper precautionary
measurements should be taken.
Remember steam can be hotter than boiling water, therefore you
shouldn’t be careless with it.
12. Warning:
• Wear goggles, protective gloves, and full selves shirt
• It takes a bit too long, as the steamer can only work on a small section at a time
• Try not to use Steamer very long at a section if you have drywall.
• Scoring first is a good idea to let the steam penetrate the wallpaper, especially if you
have vinyl-coated wallpaper.
THINGS YOU WILL NEED:
1. Wallpaper Steamer (get it on rent)
2. Water
3. Scraper (if not use putty or taping knife)
4. Scoring tool (perforator)
5. Liquid dishwasher/ soap
6. Safety goggles
7. Protective gloves
HOW TO’s:
• Wear the safety gear (mentioned above) and provide it to anyone working with
you.
• Prepare the steamer:
1. Put water in it (while it’s unplugged)
2. Turn it on and wait till it starts steaming
• Hold the steamer to the wall for 10-30 Secs
• Then strip the section that had been steamed with scraper
• While removing the scraper place the steamer on the next section. (If you have
someone to help you, you should divide the task of steaming and scraping)
• If not working properly, especially with vinyl-coated wallpaper, use a scoring tool
first (Again if you have a helping hand scoring can surely speed up the process)
• After removing all the wallpaper clean the walls with dishwasher/ soap (liquid)
mixed water using a sponge.
[Note:
• For quick removal ask someone for help as you can steam the wall and can remove
it, at the time this way.
• Don’t have to buy it, just take the steamer on rent.]
STEP 5: Clean the Walls & let
them dry
13. Congratulations! You have made it to the last and easiest step.
Though we have mentioned the “to do” of cleaning up the walls at the
end, in each method after the removal of wallpaper, yet if there is some
tough spot giving you hard time you can use wallpaper-removal spray or
can use all-purpose cleaner for that.
Spraying it on the tough spot for few minutes before wiping it off is a
good idea. (Obviously, first, try this on the bottom area if you have the
drywall)
Let the wall dry completely before you paint it or hang new wallpaper on
it.
