4. Competition Briefing
● The dictionary for this competition is the “Cambridge Learner’s
Dictionary.”
● The spelling for this competition is British English
● The pronunciation for this competition is British English
● Participants are allowed to use any electronic device as long as long as
it has camera, microphone, connected to the internet and able to use
Zoom
○ For spelling bee especially, high quality microphone is
recommended to avoid complications
● Participants are advised to finish any business they have before the
competition as they are not allowed in the Zoom call - no eating,
drinking, or any other activity unrelated to the competition
5. Rules and Requirements
● Participants must join the Zoom with a name format that shows
their category, participant number and full name;
[category]_[number]_[full name]
○ Example: B_12_John Smith
B_12_John - is allowed as long as ‘category’ and ‘number’ is
clear
● Participants must check all their devices beforehand to minimize
any incidents
○ Camera, computer, mic, internet connection, etc.
● Participants must dress neatly - formal or semi-formal - or
wearing their school uniform
6. ● Participants must join the Zoom five minutes before the schedule
○ The participants name will be called three times, failing to
response will be marked as inattendance and is automatically
disqualified
● When it is participants’ turn, they must face the camera for two
whole minutes - breaking any of these will result in a warning,
second offense will result in disqualification
○ No other person is allowed to be on the camera
○ Participant is not allowed to look anywhere other than the
camera as long as it is still their turn
○ Any external words or letters heard or seen, other than the
participants’, will count as cheating
7. ● When it is not the participants’ turn, they must respect the other
participants’ turn - same applies when the committee is speaking -
breaking any of these will result in a warning, second offense will
result in disqualification
○ Participants must mute the mic if it is not their turn
○ Participants are not allowed to use the Zoom reaction function
when other participants’ turn are ongoing
○ Participants must not write anything in the Zoom chat function
○ Participants are not allowed to help or disturb other participants
in any shape or form
○ Participants are not allowed to make any request to share the
screen
8. ● If there’s any issue regarding preparation that may affect
the participations’ performance, participants must inform
it to the admin or committee ONE DAY BEFORE the
participants’ turn
● Participants are allowed to leave the Zoom AFTER they
finish their turn; if they choose to stay, be advised that
the rules will still apply to them
9. Procedure
● There will be two rounds to the Spelling Bee competition - elimination round and
final round
● Elimination round - Thursday, October 20, 2022 [14.00 - 16.00]
○ The participants will be called by their full name and their participants’ number,
up to three times
○ Participants who are called then have to make sure their camera is on, their
mic is unmuted and say “My name is [name], I am ready”.
○ The participants will then have up to two minutes to spell as many words they
are given one by one
■ The judge will set up the stopwatch and then inform pronouncer to begin
■ They can choose to skip the word
■ They answer using the following format;
10. ○ The participant is to answer in this format, they need to spell it first, then pronounce the
word: e.g
■ Pronouncer : First word, LITTLE
Participants : L-I-T-T-L-E, LITTLE
Pronouncer : Next word, MOBILE
Participants : M-O-B-I-L-E, MOBILE
Pronouncer : Next word, ….
○ Participant may request the pronouncer to say the word again ONCE
○ The judge will not pronounce whether it is correct or incorrect
■ Pronouncer will immediately move onto the next word after the participant is
finished with the word
■ Judge will be taking score based on the criterions
○ Should the participant choose to skip or make a mistake, it will affect their final
performance
○ Skipping more than three times is considered surrender
○ After two minutes, the participant's turn will stop regardless of whatever they are doing;
e.g in the middle of spelling a word.
11. ○ The participant score will be considered as follows:
■ Most amount of words correct
■ Least amount of skips taken
■ Least amount of mistakes made
● One letter mistake is immediately considered as full accuracy mistake
○ After the judge finished tallying up, the next participant will be called and start their turn
● Final round - Friday, October 21, 2022 [14.00 - 16.00]
○ The participants will be called by their full name and their participants’ number, up to
three times
○ Participants who are called then have to make sure their camera is on, their mic is
unmuted and say “My name is [name], I am ready”.
○ The participants will then have up to two minutes to to spell as many words they are
given one by one
■ The judge will set up the stopwatch and then inform pronouncer to begin
■ They can choose to skip the word - the word they skip will appear again later
■ They answer using the following format;
12. ○ The participant is to answer in this format, they need to spell it first, then pronounce the
word: e.g
■ Pronouncer : First word, LITTLE
Participants : L-I-T-T-L-E, LITTLE
Judge : CORRECT
Pronouncer : Next word, MOBILE
Participants : M-O-B-I-L-L-E, MOBILLE
Judge : INCORRECT
Pronouncer : Next word, ….
○ Participant may request the pronouncer to say the word again ONCE
○ The judge will pronounce “CORRECT” if the spelling is right, and “INCORRECT” if the
spelling is wrong
■ Pronouncer will immediately move onto the next word after the judge says
“CORRECT/INCORRECT”
■ Judge will be taking score based on the criterions
○ Should the participant choose to skip or make a mistake, it will affect their final
performance
○ Skipping more than five times is considered surrender
13. ○ After two minutes, the participant's turn will stop regardless of whatever
they are doing; e.g in the middle of spelling a word.
○ The participant score will be considered as follows:
■ Most amount of words correct
■ Least amount of skips taken
■ Least amount of mistakes made
● One letter mistake is immediately considered as full accuracy
mistake
● “INCORRECT” answer is considered as completed, not skipped
○ After the judge finished tallying up, the next participant will be called and
start their turn
○ The winners will be announced on [Sunday, October 23, 2022]
