ABOUT THIRUVANANTHAPURAM
A gracious and evergreen city spread over seven hills, Thiruvananthapuram, capital of Kerala, is steeped
in history and culture. Located in the extreme south of the state, its shores are washed by the warm
waters of the Arabian Sea. This is a city where time moves gracefully with the day unfolding according to
time honoured rhythms, qualities which make it one of the best cities in the country. Holding fort in the
heart of the capital is Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu who reclines on
the serpent Anantha and after whom the city is named. Formerly called Trivandrum, the city’s original
name was restored in 1991.
As the visitor moves around the city he or she cannot fail to notice many traditional elements of
Kerala culture that have been passed down from generations. From temple elephants swaggering
down a street to traditionally dressed women and men as well as people eating off banana leaves, the
sights are many and often found only in this part of the country. Thiruvananthapuram is cutting edge
too. The city occupies pride of place in India’s space research programme and is home to the Indian
Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre as well as several other
institutions such as the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, Technopark and the Indian Institute of
Information Technology and Management. Students from all over Kerala make a beeline for its many
colleges and professional institutes to advance their prospects. This salubrious city is today a magnet
for tourists, businessmen and professionals. For many of them it captures the essence of Kerala and is
an ideal springboard from which to venture into the rest of the state. The city sprang into the nation’s
consciousness in 2011 with the discovery of a hoard of treasure at Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple.
Hundreds of valuable items had accumulated over the centuries as gifts from the rulers of Travancore
to the temple and is said to be worth over Rs 1 trillion. A rich legacy indeed!

Kovalam is an internationally renowned beach with three adjacent crescent beaches. It
has been a favourite haunt of tourists since the 1930s. And there is no time limit to visit
12:00 am – 11:59 pm. A massive rocky promontory on the beach has created a beautiful
bay of calm waters ideal for sea bathing. The leisure options at this beach are plenty and
diverse. Sunbathing, swimming, herbal body toning massages, special cultural
programmes and catamaran cruising are some of them. The tropical sun acts so fast that
one can see the faint blush of coppery tan on the skin in a matter of minutes. Life on the
beach begins late in the day and carries on well into the night. The beach complex
includes a string of budget cottages, Ayurvedic health resorts, convention facilities,
shopping zones, swimming pools, Yoga and Ayurvedic massage centres. Accommodation
facilities for tourists at Kovalam range from five star hotels to budget hotels and the
choice of food available at restaurants and cafeterias range from Continental varieties to
South Indian delicacies.
Kovalam Beach
Poovar Island is a solitude seekers sanctuary. This tiny isle is bordered by backwaters and Neyyar
River near its confluence to Arabian Sea. Poovar is located about 30 kilometers south of Trivandrum
and is accessible by boat only. Kovalam beach is just 12 kilometers away. What sets Poovar Island
aside is its immense natural beauty, which fortunately remains unspoilt. Beach, island, backwater,
river and sea – all meeting in a single locale casts a magical charm unique to Poovar. Dense growth of
spices and flowering plants amidst coconut and banana groves make the place a pleasing mix of
green. Fluttering butterflies and variety of birds vibrantly complement to nature’s spectacle. Busy
always, they have all the bushes and even floating hyacinths as action zones. Beach here is a stretch
of golden sands that separates backwater from the sea.It can be accessed by boat through the calm
backwater side. Unfortunately, the beach is not suitable for swimming. Estuarine belt here is an area
of strong currents throughout the year. Staying at Poovar Island is for those who want to take it all a
bit easy. Poovar is a nice romantic retreat well deserving a spot in the honeymoon map of Kerala. On
the other hand, those looking for a bit of excitement may find Poovar too slow. They may find

popular in Northern India. Commonly known as the ‘Lake District’, Nainital is nestled high up in the Kumaon
Himalayas at an altitude of around 2,000 m above sea level. This beautiful town in surrounded by seven hills,

Danda. The majestic mountains and the sparkling waters of the lake add an immense lot to the beauty of the
town. The town is centred around the emerald mountain lake Naini, which on most days is dotted with colourful
sailboats. According to mythology, the lake is believed to have been formed when the eyes of goddess “Sati”
fell at this spot while her body was being carried by Lord Shiva after her death.
The summer capital of the United Provinces during the British era, the town has a strong colonial heritage with
vibrant clusters of villas and bungalows. Homesick Britishers used to flock to this quaint town spread over a
forested valley. It is also known for the revered Naina Devi temple, which stands on the edge of the lake. Nainital
is not only a famous tourist destination but is also known for its prestigious educational institutions and
schools, which have stood since the British era.
There are many renowned personalities who are either born here or have been associated with Nainital. Jim
Corbett, author, and conservationist, was born in Nainital and was also educated here. Jim Corbett National
Park in the vicinity is named after him, which is also the first National Park of India. Anoop Jalota, a popular
classical singer and cricketer Manish Pandey were born in Nainital. Major Somnath Sharma, India’s first Param
Vir Chakra awardee as well as legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan were educated at Sherwood College of
Nainital.
Today, Nainital offers everything that's required for a perfect holiday. Plenty of hotels and resorts are set on the
hillside; the Mall Road is a busy shopping hub; cafes and restaurants serve both local and global cuisine and
there are innumerable forested trails that offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape. You can paddle in

ABOUT SHIMLA
The former summer capital of the British India, and the present capital of Himachal Pradesh, Shimla has been
blessed with all the natural bounties which one can think of. It has got a scenic location, it is surrounded by
green hills with snow capped peaks. The spectacular cool hills accompanied by the structures made during the
colonial era creates an aura which is very different from other hill. Bulging at its seams with unprecedented
expansion, Shimla retains its colonial heritage, with grand old uildings, charming iron lamp posts and Anglo-
Saxon names. The Mall, packed with shops and eateries, is the main attraction of the town, and Scandal Point,
associated with the former Maharaja of Patiala’s escapades, offers a view of distant snow clad peaks.Shimla is
ideally located, and though there is an air service to the town, it is best reached by road that takes in the
charms of the HIMALAYAN countryside at its best. There is a sense of nostalgia about SHIMLA, with its old
bungalows and their gabled roofs and beautiful gardens.
The Shimla back to the 19th century when it was founded by the British in the year 1819 after the Gorkha war.
During that period, it was most popular for the temple of Hindu Goddess Shyamala Devi. In 1822, the first
British summer home was constructed by Scottish civil servant Charles Pratt Kennedy. Shimla became the
summer capital of the British Raj during the latter half of the 19th century and the soldiers of the British army,
merchants and civil servants dropped in here to get relief from the scorching heat of the plains. Presently, it is
the state capital of Himachal Pradesh, with its population around 1.6 lacs (Shimla town only) having Altitude
2202.00 meters above sea level, Languages Pahari, Hindi and English, Best time to visit October to November
and April to June and STD Code is 0177. Shimla has seen many important historical events such as the famous
Shimla Pact between India and Pakistan which was signed here. The place is also famous for its natural
beauty, architectural buildings, wooden crafts and apples.
A remarkable event took place in the history of Shimla when the Kalka-Shimla railway line was constructed in
the year 1906 that significantly added to its quick accessibility and it gained immense popularity. Apart from
this, Shimla was declared as capital of the undivided state of Punjab in the year 1871 and remained so until
Chandigarh (the present-day capital of Punjab) was given the status of the region’s capital. Himachal Pradesh
got separated from undivided Punjab in the year 1971 with Shimla becoming its capital. You will come across
several British structures in Shimla such as the Viceregal lodge, Auckland House, Gorton Castle, Peterhoff
house, and Gaiety Theater that are the reminders of the colonial times. Some of the most prominent things to

The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is a great tourist destination.
Picturesque and enchanting, Kashmir is cradled high in the lofty green Himalayas
and hailed all over the world for its incredible natural beauty. Surrounded by
mountain peaks, lush green valleys, glistening lakes, temples and spectacular
Mughal-era gardens, it has inspired poets through centuries. Kashmir is
crisscrossed by chinar tree-lined roads and quaint wooden bridges; and is home to
bustling bazaars, sufi shrines and forts. Add to this, the charms of flavourful
Kashmiri cuisine and apples and walnuts from the lush orchards surrounding it.
In winter, Kashmir takes on a white glow, covered in soft snow and skiers making a
beeline for its famous slopes. And in summer, as the snow melts, and the flowers
in the meadows bloom, it resembles an artist's canvas.
Meanwhile, Jammu lies on the banks of the pristine Tapi river. It is dotted with
hundreds of temples. From the popular Hindu pilgrimage of Vaishno Devi, which is
located nearby, to scores of religious structures set in picturesque surroundings,
Jammu is the ideal site to set on a temple trail and soak in spiritual vibes.

disobedience against British rule in India.

Mumbai, previously known as Bombay is one of the most populous and biggest cities of Maharashtra. Also the
biggest metropolis of this state, Mumbai is also popular as the entertainment and financial capital. It is the
largest city of India and fondly called as the city of dreams. It is a place filled with dreamers and people who
work hard day and night to achieve their dreams. From struggling actors, laboureres, Bollywood stars to
gangsters, Mumbai has a lot. A lot that can be written about and talked about! Mumbai is also home to one of
the biggest slum area as well as home to the richest and thus it is only fair to describe Mumbai as a city for all.
The majorsly spoken language is definitely Hindi , but this city has welcomed people from all faiths and religion
warmly. If you want to know and experience diversity, visit Mumbai. This city also has its very own language
that is the Bambaiiya Hindi. Known to be a city filled with warm and friendly people, we believe that anything
written about Mumbai is never enough.
If you are planning to visit Mumbai, trust us when we say it may look intimidating initially, but it is not. In fact it
is one of the friendliest cities of India. The extreme energy and the fast paced life of the people here cannot be
easily matched. The heart of Mumbai has some of the best and beautiful colonial architecture and if you
venture out to the lesser known lanes, you will also come across several distinct bazaars, temples, fancy
restaurants and a nightlife that is one of its kinds. Before Mumbai became the city hat it is now, it was a
collection of seven islands which was eventually formed to form Bombay. It was given to the British as dowry to
Charles II who married Catherine of Braganza. The island city that Mumbai is today is owing to these
reclamation and these islands were home to several fishing colonies. The British made Mumbai an important
port since it was already had a natural harbor but it rose to its richness during the American Civil War when
cotton supplies were completely stopped from America to Britain. India made the most of this situation and it
is said that traders earned approximately 80 million pounds which is a lot of money. This made way for
Bombay’s very own merchant traders who were rich. As you walk around in the many lanes of South Bombay
you will still get to witness the remnants of this city’s glorious past. Cotton factories and many buildings that
are dilapidated are still to be seen scattered around many parts of Mumbai, especially South Mumbai. Apart
from this, another every interesting par about this city is that in spite of the several unfortunate incidents and

  • 5. ABOUT THIRUVANANTHAPURAM A gracious and evergreen city spread over seven hills, Thiruvananthapuram, capital of Kerala, is steeped in history and culture. Located in the extreme south of the state, its shores are washed by the warm waters of the Arabian Sea. This is a city where time moves gracefully with the day unfolding according to time honoured rhythms, qualities which make it one of the best cities in the country. Holding fort in the heart of the capital is Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu who reclines on the serpent Anantha and after whom the city is named. Formerly called Trivandrum, the city’s original name was restored in 1991. As the visitor moves around the city he or she cannot fail to notice many traditional elements of Kerala culture that have been passed down from generations. From temple elephants swaggering down a street to traditionally dressed women and men as well as people eating off banana leaves, the sights are many and often found only in this part of the country. Thiruvananthapuram is cutting edge too. The city occupies pride of place in India’s space research programme and is home to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre as well as several other institutions such as the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, Technopark and the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management. Students from all over Kerala make a beeline for its many colleges and professional institutes to advance their prospects. This salubrious city is today a magnet for tourists, businessmen and professionals. For many of them it captures the essence of Kerala and is an ideal springboard from which to venture into the rest of the state. The city sprang into the nation’s consciousness in 2011 with the discovery of a hoard of treasure at Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple. Hundreds of valuable items had accumulated over the centuries as gifts from the rulers of Travancore to the temple and is said to be worth over Rs 1 trillion. A rich legacy indeed!
