‘’Entrepreneurship is not about creating companies – it’s about changing the world.’’ (Mark Zuckerberg)
Uber. Facebook. WhatsApp. Instagram. Tales of billion-dollar acquisitions, and life-changing business deals on a world scale have succeeded in drawing the young and the young-at-heart to what is arguably the world’s most attractive business profession – technology entrepreneurship. Similar to the hordes of people who swarmed across 20th-century California in search of gold during the gold rush era, a new movement has begun in 21st century Silicon Valley, and has spread across most of the developed and developing world.
Once one gets the entrepreneurial itch, one has to scratch it. Do you have an idea for a tech or tech-enabled business? Would you like to join the ranks of optimistic techpreneurs?
Join Kleos Africa’s consultant and Beta Gamma Sigma member Pablo Ruz Salmones in this webinar and you will gain more insights into the world of technology entrepreneurship. Pablo’s experience straddles both business and engineering. A member of the Mexican School of Public Accountants, he is also an experienced computer engineer, app developer and the Founder and CEO of Ya Quedo, a software company based in Mexico City. In his spare time, Pablo composes music and gives international piano concerts in Mexico and New Zealand.

RIGHT TECH

5
ABOUT ME
• I am a professional pianist

7. • Final goal: to make people lives better, or a
dream come true.
• What is the best tool to achieve that?
• Is it possible that you’re thinking that you need
AI when in fact you’d only need an Excel sheet?
• Take trends and marketing into consideration
7
TECH IS A MEANS, NOT AN END
12. FIRST AND MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION:
DO I REALLY NEED TECH FOR THIS?
12
13. Have or hire people who:
• Believe in you
• Believe in your business
• Share your values (never sacrifice who
you are)
• Understand your business and business
model
• Have the technical knowledge and
expertise
13
THE RIGHT PARTNER
14. Some tips:
▫ Speak to them first.
▫ Try to assess what is it that they want.
▫ Is their interest true or fake?
▫ Do your homework, and research.
▫ BE PATIENT, it is better to wait for the
right partner than to go with the first that
says “yes” to you.
14
THE RIGHT PARTNER
15. • Understand the core of your business
• Work out if implementing certain tech is
indeed a good idea given the stage of
your company.
• AI shouldn’t be everywhere
15
THE RIGHT TECH
16. • Main purpose of your platform
• Why and when the platform will be used
• Reach of the platform
• Reach of the algorithms
• How flexible your platform will be
• CAC (don’t underestimate it!)
16
What to consider
17. 17
Examples
App Website AI-based
Goal Immediacy
Constant feedback
Meeting people
Reliability Personalization
Why Fastest way to access
info
Keeping organized They want unique
experiences
Reach Worldwide (?) Worldwide Worldwide (?)
Flexibility Medium Medium Medium
CAC High Medium N/A
When All the time Certain times N/A
18. • When will the customer interact with your app/website/algorithm?
• What are the key factors in which the customer will not tolerate failure or
bad experience?
• Track everything
18
Build a Customer
Journey for your tech
19. • If you are creating a new model, then try to see if it could work without
heavy tech (you’ll implement it later)
• However, if it is the tech itself that gives you the advantage over others, try
to “zip” those advantages into something manageable.
PRIORITIZE
19
Is it the model or the road?
20. • Even YouTube stopped working
once, don’t try to fix everything.
• But have control over the main
struggles your customer will go
through.
20
Don’t go for perfect, go for great
21. • You don’t want to end up building a magnificent plane, and then not having
the ability to fly it.
• Don’t allocate all of your resources to tech. A plane is capable of flying
because of both its tech, its crew (in sky and in land), the customers
boarding it, the fuel in it, and many other factors.
• If you believe developing tech will save you, think twice.
21
Have fuel for the plane
23. Information is the oil of the 21st century,
and analytics is the combustion engine.
- Peter Sondergaard, Senior
Vice President, Gartner
23
24. • What is “artificial”?
• What is “intelligence”?
• (Come up with something)
• Two main approaches in AI: (1) To create machines that think like human
beings, (2) To create machines which are better than human beings and do
not replicate their way of thinking and deciding.
• Common ground: should be able to learn & decide
24
Artificial Intelligence
25. • Excel is NOT big data
• Managing and analyzing data in huge quantities.
• How to define “huge”?
• Correctly analyzing, and interpreting the data is WAY more important than
how big are your datasets.
25
Big data
