CHALLENGE: DEGRADATION OF AFRICA’S DRYLANDS
• 65% of Africa’s land is
degraded, imperilling food
security
• 30-60% of African countries’
GDP comes from agriculture,
which remains underinvested
• 226 million youth (15-24)
need jobs, but
unemployment is high
4. 4
SOLUTION: AFR100 AND THE GREAT GREEN WALL
• 130+ million ha of political commitment
across 34 countries: AFR100 + GGW
• $1 invested = $7-30 in economic benefits
• >$15 billion committed by funders
• Private sector keen to invest in restoration
for carbon neutrality
• Pioneering work from entrepreneurs and
small-scale projects
• Some local companies scaling up
• But…
5. Feedback we received from 650+ participants on Tuesday:
1. Build up strong regional partnerships like AFR100 + GGW
2. Create incentives + PPPs to strengthen markets
3. Train entrepreneurs, communities, youth to absorb investment
4. Bundle projects in investible portfolios
5. Track where restoration is happening and people are benefitting
6. Communicate about success (and failures)

In 2011, WRI, IUCN and the University of Maryland mapped restoration opportunities globally at 1km scale
Found more than 2 billion hectares (2x size of China) with opportunities for restoration
~75% of the opportunity is “mosaic”, exhibiting a mix of trees with agriculture and other land uses
~20% is “widescale” back into natural forests
~5% is “remote”, mostly in the boreal region
