1. Ideas and planning
For my second-year projectI havedecided that I wantto challenge myself and
do a combination of both options that I havebeen given for this project, which
are to create a 10-minuteminimum documentary and a series of images that
will be edited digitally to showcasethespecific theme that I have chosen for
my project. When thinking about the digital images I wanted to showcasesmall
parts throughoutmy documentary and use someof the images as
‘advertisements’ for my documentary. By choosing to do both options that I
have been given this allows me to show my range of skills that I have learned
over my firstyear on my course and show whatI can do within the largest
projectacross the two-year period that I am on the course.
For my documentary I havedecided that my theme is going to be ‘How music
has shaped the North-East’, this theme will focus on how music has shaped the
culture across the North-East, this will include famous bands that originated
fromthe North and how it has broughtthe area together. For my documentary
I also wantto include interviews to include other people’s opinions on music
and how it has affected them personally and allows the interviewee to express
their own feelings throughoutthe documentary. When thinking of a theme for
my documentary and taking the target audience into consideration, for people
within the group of 16-25, I believe that everyonehas one thing in common,
and that I the strong love for music across the target audience age group.
Whether that be listening to music on an online streaming serviceor going
back to vinyl’s I wantto show a variety on how different people listen to their
music and how it allows them to express themselves. For my documentary I
also wantto show the culture across both Newcastle and Sunderland rather
than justone city, by doing this I’m allowing myself to get a wider range of
content and more opinions from members of the public in both cities. My
documentary will include clips that I have taken myself of the cities with an
added voiceover done by myself. The voiceover will include information about
the cities and some history behind them to add somebackground information
before I go into depth about how music has affected the city and the people
in/ around it.
With this projectthankfully we haven been given a long period of time to
complete this projectwhich I believe I can get done to the best of my ability in
the time framethat we havebeen given. However, the issues I will mostlikely
have is finding members of the public who are willing to be on camera for
2. some of my interviews, as many people are not comfortable with being on
camera. If the public aren’tcomfortable to be in frontof the camera, I plan on
interviewing closefamily and friends and justusing a microphone to interview
the public if they don’t wantto be in frontof the camera which will still allow
me to gain a wider variety of opinions of how people express themselves
through different styles of music. For my images my greatest concern is
different locations, by choosing both Newcastleand Sunderland to include in
this projectI have allowed myself to have a variety of locations to chose from,
but my biggestconcern is the time it may take me to find locations that will
specifically target my theme for the project. For my images I would like to take
pictures inside of different music shops likeHMV or vintage vinyl stores,
however the problem may be that the shop may not allow photography within
the shop.
I believe that the ideas that I have stated above are morethan suitable for the
given brief that we have been asked to create. By asking us to create a piece of
media that represents the talent within the region. By me deciding to create
both print media and a documentary I feel like this will display the skills that I
have developed through the last year through my course. In this projectI will
be showcasing my skills such as editing images digitally and fully editing a
documentary to a high standard. In the given brief it stated that we had to
create a piece that educated the audience as well as show talent in the region,
I will be educating my audience on how music has a different affect on every
individual and how it has shaped the Northeastinto the region it is today.
For the two projects I wouldn’tbe needing much help with the print media and
the technical side that comes with taking the images/ editing as these will be
taken with a camera and a tripod, as well as an SD card and a backup battery,
since I havebeen developing skills with editing and camera work for print
media, I feel like this wont be an issuefor me during the project. However, for
my documentary I will be relying on other people more than the printmedia,
this is due to the fact of that I will be needing people for interviews and to
ensurethat both the audio and visuals are up to a high quality for the final cut.
The rest of the project will be completed by myself so the editing, filming and
recordings as I feel as though sinceit is my work and my ideas it is to be done
by me. This will also allow me to complete it to the high standard that is
expected, and I can complete the vision that I have planned for the project.
With editing both my images and the documentary I will eb using the
software’s thatare provided by college ( premier pro and photoshop), I will
3. also be using the recording studio that is in the college facilities to record my
voiceover so it is at a high and professionalstandard.
Below are some potential interview questions that I have started to think
about, so I have a general and structured idea on whatI want to ask people
