2. The Story of Sarah Ann Reed
The Reed Family played a leading role in the founding of Erie, PA, and contributed greatly to
helping it grow and thrive. Sarah's great-grandparents, Seth and Hannah Reed, arrived by sailing
ship from Buffalo, NY on July 1, 1795. With their two sons, Manning and Charles J., they
became the first family to settle in Erie. During the summer of 1795, Seth and Hannah welcomed
another son, Rufus, who would later become a prominent leader in many business and civic
activities in Erie. His stately residence at the corner of Sixth and State Street would later become
the first location for "The Home For the Friendless," where Sarah A. Reed devoted 60+ years of
her life to making a difference for Erie's orphaned children, elderly women and homeless mothers
and their children who had no place to turn.
Sarah’s father, William, was born on Jan. 1, 1797, to Charles and Rachel Wyndham Reed. When
William came of age, he moved to Ashtabula, OH, to work in the mercantile trade and the
forwarding business, and he married Elizabeth Ingram Smith in 1821. On March 16, 1838, they
welcomed their eighth and final child, Sarah A. Reed. Sarah's family moved to Erie in 1845
when her father became the Secretary-Treasurer of the Erie Canal Company, which had originally
been organized by William's uncle, Rufus Reed, and Rufus' son, Charles Manning, both of whom
were officers. Rufus Reed was also involved in forming Erie's first active fire company in 1826
and in developing Erie's water system.

The Reed House
Sarah A. Reed Children's Center was founded in 1871 in Erie, Pennsylvania, by a group of
30 women interested in helping orphaned and homeless children. Sarah A. Reed was an
original member of this group who founded “The Association for Improving the Conditions
of the Poor, and a Home for the Friendless.” Miss Reed, affectionately known as "Erie's
Grand Old Lady" during the early 1900s, served as President of this organization for 45
years, from 1889 until her death in 1934. Her contributions to the agency were so
substantial that in 1935 the Center was renamed in her honor.
Sarah A. Reed Children's Center has grown significantly over the years, but the heart of the
organization and the mission that Sarah Reed began back in 1871 are still alive and well.
The agency is proud to continue in Sarah's footsteps, providing the necessary mental health
services and behavioral health programs that help 1,700 children and their families out of
crisis each year and onto a healthier, successful future. For example, the agency's Parent-
Child Interaction Therapy gives families the guidance and tools they need to successfully
parent children who display significantly disruptive or oppositional behaviors. Sarah Reed
also offers a wide array of school-based and community-based educational programs
throughout Erie County for students with mental health and behavioral challenges, and its
first- class Residential Treatment Program provides 24-hour intensive treatment, including:
individual, family, and group therapy; art therapy; recreational therapy; medical care and
educational programming for children and adolescents, many of whom have experienced
significant abuse and trauma.
"It is easy to estimate the value of the property
and tell of the thoroughly organized institution
that has grown out of a venture of faith. But
who can estimate the good it has done or
follow its far reaching influences? Volumes
would not tell the story of all the lives it has
helped."

A Top Employer in Erie County
With five locations in Erie County
and 360 staff members, Sarah A.
Reed Children's Center continues to
be ranked among the top employers in
Erie County.
4. A child's typical length of stay varies from six months to 1.5 years, and our staff
members go above and beyond the call of duty to provide the most normative
experience possible during each child’s stay. This includes daily education classes led by
teachers from the Millcreek Township School District at Ridgefield Elementary, music
therapy, expressive arts projects, individualized treatment plans and educational
enrichment outings in the community. Therapy and treatment extends beyond the child to
the entire family whenever possible. Our goal is to affect positive change within the entire
family unit during their time with us, which leads to safer choices, healthier lifestyles and,
ultimately, permanent success.
Sarah A. Reed Children's Center is a leader in the care and treatment of children with severe emotional, mental and behavioral
health challenges, specifically those with significant histories of trauma such as domestic violence and sexual abuse. Our
Residential Treatment Program is exclusively designed to help this fragile population of children (ages 5-18) whose needs and
safety concerns require 24-hour medical and therapeutic supervision.
In 2017, Sarah Reed’s Residential Treatment Program served 51 children from 22 different counties throughout Pennsylvania.
Most of the children are from Erie County, but we also serve children and families from the Pittsburgh, Harrisburg and
Philadelphia region. Every child admitted to this program has a mental health diagnosis and many have experienced extreme
trauma and abuse.
One of the key components that sets Sarah Reed apart is we are one of the few agencies in the entire northwestern Pennsylvania
region that is certified in the highly effective Sanctuary® Model. The Sanctuary® Model is an evidence-based, nationally
recognized practice of trauma-informed care that emphasizes resiliency and recovery of people struggling with emotional and
behavioral difficulties and adversities. This treatment model helps to support key competencies that children, youth and
families need to support positive behavioral and mental health resiliency during and in response to stress and recovery from
previous trauma. Left untreated, this can lead to a lifetime of significant impairment in emotional health. Each child's
individualized treatment plan is developed by the child and family team. This team includes the child, family, psychiatrist,
therapist, nurse, case manager, education representative, and representatives from child-serving agencies. Using the Sanctuary®
Model as our guide, we provide successful care for these individuals, giving them the opportunity to excel at home, in school
and in the community.

5. Sarah Reed is working on transformational capital and programmatic
improvements for its 150th Anniversary in 2021, including:
Beginning with the 2018-2019 academic year, Sarah Reed is re-energizing
Ridgefield Elementary School at 3227 Highland Road. The school was
closed by the Millcreek Township School District in 2013 and laid
dormant for five years. This high-quality educational facility is located
across the street from our main residential campus and is now the home of
our Residential School and our Millcreek Partial Hospitalization Program,
which serve a total of over 120 children annually. With the superior
layout of the building, our students will have the opportunity to learn in a
more traditional school environment, which will ease their transition when
they return to their home school districts.
Growing Our Vision & Expanding Our Reach
Over the last decade, Sarah Reed's Residential
Treatment Program has helped 604 children from 44
counties across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
We are very proud of the first-class reputation our
agency has earned in the successful treatment of children
with emotional, mental and behavioral health challenges,
and our staff is highly trained to work with children who
have suffered severe trauma and abuse. Many families
who tour our residential facilities are immediately
impressed by Sarah Reed's warm, personalized campus
atmosphere.
"Children want to stay longer because they feel safe,
secure and are treated with respect. They feel like they
have grown and are part of a family here at Sarah Reed,"
said Dr. Adrienne Dixon, associate vice president
of residential treatment services and community support
at Sarah A. Reed Children's Center.
The success of this program has caused a sharp increase
in demand for Sarah Reed's specialized level of
psychiatric care.
Based in Erie, PA, Sarah Reed's Residential Treatment Program has
earned a first-class reputation across the Commonwealth. Since 2008,
we've served 604 children from 44 counties across Pennsylvania.
The Impact of the Residential Treatment Program
Acquired the Use of Ridgefield School
In order to meet the increasing demand for 24-hour psychiatric care for
children ages 5-18, Sarah Reed is building another 12-bed residence hall.
This project broke ground in June 2018 and is scheduled to be completed
in Spring 2019. The total project cost is $1.2M and will allow Sarah
Reed to serve an additional 20-25 children annually. Helping children in
Erie County is one of our top priorities, and the addition of this residence
hall will allow more children in need to remain in Erie, closer to their
families.

think I would be where I am
today. Sarah Reed gives people
chances to shine and do their best.
It’s a life-changing experience.

Reed Children's Center. Eric has served the agency for 20
years and continues to move the organization forward,
providing the latest in clinical training and research and

Educating Future Leaders in Mental Health:
Sarah A. Reed Children's Center offers Child Psychiatry Fellows from LECOM Health to do 3-6 month rotations under the
supervision of our two full-time Child Psychiatrists. These fellows are in their 4th and 5th years of their Child Psychiatry
Fellowship training, having already completed three years of an Adult Psychiatry Residency.
Our psychiatrists meet with these fellows initially and orient them to our programs, which include Acute Partial, School-Based
Partial, and Residential Treatment. The fellows are then able to be assigned their own case load of clients that they will follow
during their time with us, which is under the supervision of our staff psychiatrists.
We are able to discuss the clients not only in terms of diagnosis
and treatment, but also in regards to the psychosocial and
environmental stressors and factors that contribute to their
presentation. Community-based support services are also
discussed.
The experience these fellows are able to derive from their time at
Sarah A. Reed Children's Center offers them exposure to treatment
modalities they otherwise would not be exposed to during their
fellowship training.
It also serves as an exposure and recruitment tool to perhaps
encourage new Child Psychiatrists to remain in the Erie area and
offer their expertise to our community.
Sarah Reed partners with LECOM Health to help 4th and 5th
year students gain experience through the Child Psychiatry
Fellowship Training Program.
