Best Wishes to Marlene Dexter, RN On Her Retirement After 22 Years!
Marlene Dexter, RN, former associate
vice president of compliance and
director of nursing, retired on February
14th after 22 years with the agency.
Marlene, how did you start your career at Sarah Reed?
Marlene Dexter, RN, served as the agency's associate vice president of compliance and director of nursing. She made a significant impact
during her 22 years of service! Marlene sat down to share some of the changes she witnessed over the years, along with what makes the
agency so special to her. All of us here at Sarah Reed wish her the very best in her retirement. Congratulations, Marlene!
"I started as a utilization review nurse in 1997. Before that, I worked at Hamot where I did
utilization review for the Behavioral Health Unit."
You’ve made a significant impact on the agency, through your years of service to the
children and families, as well as being a long-time supporter of Sarah Reed’s Annual
Fund. What sets Sarah Reed apart and makes it so special to you?
Can you share some of the changes you've seen during your 22 years of service?
"I've certainly witnessed an increase in regulations over the years. There have also been major
advances in the treatment of children with mental health challenges, along with the adoption of
a trauma-informed care model. Actually we had been practicing the foundations of trauma-
informed care for many years at Sarah Reed - now it has a name!"
"There are so many wonderful people at this agency! It was very easy to be part of Sarah
Reed's team because the people who work here are like family. We always put the children we
care for first, and that's why we are one of the best."
Pictured (L to R) are members of Sarah Reed’s Steering Committee: Larry Shallenberger, associate vice president of compliance; Mary
Barr, associate vice president of human resources; Matt Haight, manager of training and employee development; Joe Romanowicz,
residential program supervisor; and Tony Bostaph, director of outpatient behavioral health services.

2. Staff & Event Spotlight
This year's Souper Bowl win was extra-special for Bill Miller, president of Sabella's Catering. Bill and
his wife, Janet, have been participating in the Souper Bowl every year since the event kicked-off in
1998. This is Sabella's first win, and Bill and Janet couldn't have been prouder of their team for
bringing home the coveted trophy for their signature Sassy Squash Bisque.
"We've definitely placed in the top three over the years, which was always exciting, but to win the
trophy and to be voted the best soup by the 1,200+ fans here today, that is a really great feeling," said
Bill. "And we do it all in support of the kids at Sarah Reed, which makes it even better."
Everyone at Sarah Reed was thrilled for Bill's win, too. He not only participates in the event every year,
but he's also served on our Board of Directors for over 22 years!
Thank you to everyone who joined us for Souper Bowl XXII! The support of our restaurants, fans,
sponsors, and volunteers helped us to raise over $21,000 for the kids!

Amanda began her journey with us as an intern in our Early Intervention program while she
was in her undergraduate program at Mercyhurst University. After Amanda earned her
Master’s in Counseling and Human Services from Canisius College in Buffalo, she joined the
team in our Bridges Alternative Education Program as a therapist and intake coordinator.
We asked Amanda to share her thoughts on alternative education and what she likes best
about Sarah Reed's Bridges Program.
"Sometimes I think alternative education has a stigma attached to it, like if you come here it’s
kind of like quicksand and there’s no way out. Sarah Reed's Bridges Program has many
success stories to prove that quicksand theory wrong! We create a completely different
environment here that combines education and the therapeutic tools students need to be
successful. It can be a quick reset to help kids get back to their goals and get back on track.
They don’t have to get pulled down.”

Andy Kerr (left) was one of the guest speakers during our recent Employee Health & Wellness
Fair. Andy is a local motivational speaker and shared his latest presentation, “Drop Your
P.A.S.T. and Run With Purpose,” to staff who were able to attend in-person and several who
joined us remotely from our other campuses.
Staff also enjoyed complimentary yoga sessions from Plasha Yoga Studio and LECOM
Medical Fitness & Wellness Center Yoga, chair massages from A Compassionate Hart
Massage Therapy, visits with adoptable pets from the Erie Humane Society, flu shots and
wellness check-ups, and great info and giveaways from 12 of our community partners.
We want to give a special shout out to our health fair organizers, Patty Hoffman, RN, a nurse at
our Residential Program, and Molly Myers, special events manager and executive assistant to
the CEO, for coordinating this special day for us!
5. Women's Auxiliary Fundraisers a Success!
The Sarah Reed Women's Auxiliary would like to thank everyone who attended their 2019 Women's Auxiliary Dinner at 21 La
Rue Dix in November and their 2019 Luncheon Fundraiser at the Watson-Curtze Mansion in December. These events raised
$14,000 in support of the children! The money is used for a variety of seasonal crafts and activities for the children, including:
field trips to the Erie Zoo and Waldameer, movie passes, a prom dinner for over 40 children and staff members, a back-to-school
ice cream social, a holiday gift store and wrapping party, school uniforms, sewing machines, art and recreational supplies and much
more. These experiences offer opportunities to create happy memories and moments of joy for the children, which help build their
confidence, instill hope, and encourage them to reach their potential. If you're interested in learning more about the Women's
Auxiliary or becoming a member, please contact Molly Myers at (814) 835-7606 or via e-mail at

We were overwhelmed by the outpouring of support we received this year from local businesses
and organizations, individuals and families, and our very own Sarah Reed staff members who
purchased Christmas presents for the 187 children at our Residential and Hamilton campuses!
Many of our children come from low-income families, and the extra help at the holidays really
makes a difference. Some of the children in our Residential Program were able to go home over
Christmas, but about 50% of them stayed on campus this year. Our donors put a big smile on
the children's faces Christmas morning when they woke up to all those beautifully-wrapped gifts
under the tree! Special thanks to Michelle Skellie and everyone who participated in the Langer
Family's 13th Annual Santa Bar Crawl on December 7th. You helped us collect 210 gifts and
over $2,000 for the children and families at our Partial Hospitalization Program!
These are a few of the wonderful organizations who purchased gifts for the children this year:
