Shane received his PhD from Monash University and post-doctoral training at Harvard Medical School. While at Harvard, Shane became involved in islet
transplantation and type I diabetes research. He received a JDRF Career Development Award to establish an independent research program and was
appointed as Assistant Professor in Surgery at Harvard Medical School in 2001. In 2003 Shane was recruited back to Australia to the Garvan Institute on a
NSW BioFirst Award. Shane has received several awards for his work on T1D, including a Key Thought Leader award from the International
Transplantation Society and a JDRF-Macquarie Group Foundation Innovation Award. Shane heads the transplant immunology research team at the Garvan;
as well as being lead investigator on Australia's first clinical islet transplant program at Westmead, Program Director of a national NHMRC/JDRF research
program for T1D, and a founder of the Australian Islet Study Group.
