These are fraternal twins from the same mother and father. Though they are closely related it is obvious that they look very different. How can we make sense of why people look the way they do and how can we control and predict this.
Genetic Inheritance - the pattern of how characteristics are passed down from one generation to the next
Note- the daughters eyes are blue while both parents have brown eyes.
One of the first people to scientifically study inheritance was Gregor Mendel. He was an Austrian friar, meaning he worked within the church. Mendel researched inheritance using pea plants. He found when he crossed a yellow pea plant to a green pea plant the offspring were always yellow.
Pheno type is what we actually observe. For pea plants there are many phenotypic characteristics. Green and yellow are simple phenotypic traits. Their pattern of inheritance is very predictable.
Genotype is the actual coding of DNA within the chromosome. This code has to copies and represents a certain trait. Each copy is inherited by 1 parent and they do not have to match
Walk through example, letters on outside are parents. Each combination within are the probable offspring.
If this topic interests you perhaps you could pursue a career as a genetic counselor. Parents that are considering having children can find out what chance their children will have of inheriting certain diseases. They can also assist people with fertility issues. This is a well paying job that has low representation with folks of color.
