Materialism
1. 7 Things Jesus Said About Our Stuff
THAT WE HAVE A HARD TIME ACCEPTING
2. Loving your possessions is a serious problem
•Matthew 19:16-22
• Jesus’ conversation with the “rich young ruler”
• Rich young ruler asks Jesus, “What do I still lack?”
• Jesus responds, “Go, sell what you have and give to the poor,
and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”
• “But the young man went away sorrowful, for he had great
possessions.”
• Do you love your possessions more that you love
Christ?
• That will keep you from eternal life
3. Your earthly possessions are not going to last long
• Matthew 6:19-21
• Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth
• For where your treasure is, there your heart will be
also
• Can you think of 3 things that are
irreplaceable?
• They will be lost and destroyed as well
4. Your possessions are not what life is all about
• Luke 12:11-15
• If anything, they will interrupt your life with God
• They do not provide satisfaction to your life
• Ecc. 5:10,12 - He who loves silver will not be satisfied with
silver; Nor he who loves abundance, with increase.
This also is vanity…12 The sleep of a laboring man is sweet,
Whether he eats little or much;
But the abundance of the rich will not permit him to sleep.
• They do not protect the most important
aspects of your life
• Luke 12:16-21
5. You cannot serve God and material wealth
•Matthew 6:24
• You cannot do both
6. Anxiety is a product of Materialism
•Luke 12:22-29
• Do not worry about what you will eat, or what you
will put on v22
• Life is more than food, and the body is more than
clothing v24
• What good does worrying do? V25
• Consider the ravens, the lilies, and the grass.
7. Putting your trust in an abundance of necessities
is also materialism
• 1 Tim. 6:17 - 17 Command those who are rich in this
present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in
uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us
richly all things to enjoy.
• There is nothing wrong with store houses
• Joseph had store houses
• but His trust was in the God who told him to
build them
8. Your “stuff” cannot take care of you like God can
• Luke 12:30-34
• Heb. 13:5 - 5 Let your conduct be without
covetousness; be content with such things as
you have. For He Himself has said, “I will
never leave you nor forsake you.”
