Although there are overlapping aspects of parenting and teaching. The
difference is still quite obvious.
6. The Question of Turf
In the classroom, teachers work on their own turf. Parents might feel less secure
and comfortable in the classroom settings than teachers. The question of turf
gets more complicated when teachers try to build up barriers to avoid parental
invasion over their turf.
7. The Nature of Trust
The development of trust in both teachers and families is the essential step in
building a good partnership. The development of trust is time-consuming and
effortful. Trust issues usually are significant among parents who receive
negative communication or no communication from the school.
8. Differences of Expertise
Similar to the issue of trust, differences in expertise also cause the distance
between teachers and families. Our society has been practicing the exercise of
expert knowledge. Teachers are regarded as experts, and parents are
considered the novice.
9. Personal Factors
Sometimes, teachers’ own personalities also will cause problems in
communicating with parents. Some teachers are more introverted personalities,
and feel discomfort in social situations.
10. External Factors
The external factors such as time and administrative policies can act as the barrier to partnership.
Time
-Both parents and teachers face time constraints. Teachers are occupied with work and so as the
parents, which would lead to them not having enough time to collaborate or communicate regarding the
child’s education.
Administrative policies
-Some schools impose policies that prevent the teachers from communicating with the parents. This
can create a barrier for both parties.
