1. An education is only as good
as what you make of it. It
gives you part of what you
need to succeed in life,
but it doesn’t make you
succeed or bring about
success. Success comes
when you put your “tools”
to good use.
Success also comes with
continuing to learn as you
go. Your academic education
might have been enough to get
you started in planting your garden,
but as you continue, you’ll learn a
lot of new and practical things that
your academic education didn’t prepare
you for. It was the base you needed
to get started, but in many cases the
real education comes as you put it into
practice.

Getting an education is
like collecting the tools
that you need to do a job,
and acquiring some basic
knowledge of how to do
that job. It gives you the
foundation to get started,
but it doesn’t do the job
for you.
Maybe you want to plant
a garden. You have the
tools you need and a
basic idea of how to get
started, but if you stop
there, you won’t have any
garden, and the time you
spent planning to grow a
garden won’t have done
you any good.

how ... so where’s

2. Education provides a
platform for success;
it doesn’t make you
successful. Once you’ve
“finished” your education
and you start to actually
do the job in the “real
world,” whether you’re a
missionary or any other
type of professional, you’ll
find that your education is
just beginning.
Be eager and open to
learn as you go, to
develop the skills that you
need to succeed. Realize
that learning continues
after one has gotten
a textbook education.
As the old saying goes,
“The more you know, the
more you know that you
don’t know.” In other
words, the more you learn, the more you realize how
much there is to learn. That’s a good thing, because
staying interested and curious, and continuing to
learn, will help you to get the most out of life.
I have found
that learning how
to do a job and
actually doing it
are two different
things!
Learning,
learning … it
never ends!—And
I love it!
