Music Magazine Deconstruction Hip-Hop and Rock
Masthead: Large bold font - eye grabbing. The word “Vibe” is often used in slang and the Hip-Hop terminology instantly conveying the genres covered in this magazine. The text matches the font of the “advisory” warning on cd’ssuggesting the genre of music this magazine is promoting and the nature and personality as well as themes in the interview with Eminem. The red and black colour theme reminds us of danger and trouble again giving an insight into the contents of the magazine. The connotations is that Eminem is dangerous . The black to red fade is bright and contrasts to the background. It is also a mixture of the 2 main colours on the page, black and red making it seem like the most important piece of text. Gives an insight into what the feature will be about drawing target audience in. Main image = largest object on page symbolising importance in magazine as well as his central position in the layout of the magazine. Body language suggests a stubborn or strong willed out look as the crossed arms are reminiscent of a wall. Connotations of a hard man. The bottom half of the magazine is very symmetrical. This is in contrast to the top half which therefore gains more attention/ is more eye catching with the larger font and head of the main image. Eminem’s tattooed muscles and a black vest gives him a “hard” look putting emphasis on his figure. His facial expression allows for the reader to connect and be attracted to read the magazine as the eye contact is very inviting.
The most eye capturing symbol on this magazine front cover is the very large and bold "NME" main heading in bright red with a white outline. This works well as it promotes the brand identity due to the fact that it is so bold that it is a hard symbol to forget. There are small pictures in the top right hand corner that give an insight into the kind of bands and the type of magazine this is. For example, you can tell this is a rock and indi based magazine as in the small pictures you can see rock symbols of our era, such as The Arctic Monkeys. The blue strip along the top of the poster informs the reader of a free item. This i think is put in a blue box as it stands out from the rest of the brightly coloured magazine as no other part of the magazine is this darkly coloured. We can also see the sell lines capturing the attention of the reader with a mixture of yellow and white on a dull background making it stand out. David Morrissey is placed in the centre of this magazine with everything arranged around him showing he is a main focus of the magazine with the largest type of the page being his name showing that he will be heavily featured in this magazine issue. The main Tagline “Morrissey” is in a much larger font, white being used to promote the names of the bands featured. Therefore, we can tell “Morrissey” will be featured most heavily as his type is the largest of all of the white taglines and is most central. The bright colour’s generally used also attract a young and charismatic target audience as they suggest vitality, fun and a sense of direction within the magazine as the colours seem consistent with themes. The mode of address on this magazine front cover would obviously be the instant recognition of the large "NME" text as well as the main image which connects to the reader through the eye contact the main image (Morrissey) has with the reader.
