1. PROJECT G.R.O.W (Giving of Reading
materials Once a Week):
AN INTERVENTION POGRAM TO
IMPROVE READING
PROFICIENCY LEVEL OF GRADE ONE
LEARNERS
OF BOTOLAN NORTH INTEGRATED
SCHOOL
2. BACKGROUND
• Reading plays a very crucial role in man's life as reading
influences one's way of thinking, which consequently
affects one's total development as a person. Although
man's development is influenced by many factors,
learning is obtained through reading. Consequently,
individuals must find ways how to develop and improve
their reading comprehension skills.
• In the Philippines, 80% of the learners did not meet the
basic level of reading competency (Programme for
International Student Assessment, 2018). The learners'
low performance in English, Mathematics, and Science is
linked to a lack of fundamental reading and
comprehension skills. As a result, the Department of
Education (DepEd) has created the Hamon: Bawat Bata
Bumabasa (3Bs Initiatives) to increase reading advocacy
and to commit to making every learner a reader at his or
her grade level.
• The Department of Education from the national level
implemented the “Every Child A Reader Program” (ECARP)
and recently launched a program called Reading Program
Progress Tool during 2022 Pambansang Buwan ng Pagbasa
to help the learners improve in their reading skills and the
latter to enhance reading proficiency and develop love for
reading. DepEd Region Office through the HRRD also has
Care for Non-Readers Program (CNR). Furthermore, the
Division of Zambales implemented the Reading Program
successfully with the same aim.
3. • The pre-test assessment in the
reading proficiency level mostly
indicated as “Needs
Improvement” for the S.Y 2022-
2023. Because of this, the
researcher aim to help increase
the result by having the Project
G.R.O.W which is giving of reading
materials to help increase reading
proficiency level and help pupils
who have difficulty in reading
learn to read easily.
