There are around 400 million native English speakers in the world and another
1.6 billion non-natives who either speak it, or are learning to do so.
That’s nearly a third of the planet! English has become, by any measure, the world’s
chosen language for international communication. It underpins almost every aspect of
a large business, from day-to-day processes through to management, development
and leadership of international workforces. Any organization that wants to do business
outside of their own borders needs to speak English, and speak it well. That’s why we
call it Strategic English.
EF has been at the forefront of language, management and leadership training
for over
50 years. Over 2,500 companies, government institutions and millions of students
worldwide trust our programs. Why? The answer is simple; our programs work. We
prove time and again that there is no faster, more engaging way to learn English, or
leadership skills, for big business impact.
We offer exclusive EF Executive Language Institutes in Boston (USA), Cambridge (UK),
and now our Ashridge campus near London, plus hundreds of worldwide language
schools. We have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in our multi-award winning
EnglishLive™ cloud school (the world’s largest). No-one provides a more engaging,
relevant and effective learning experience as EF; it’s what gets us up in the morning.
How can we make such bold statements? Because education is in our DNA. When

management or leadership training, you also get education experts with just one goal
in mind: your success. Our School and Academic Directors help students get the most

WHY ENGLISH
REALLY MATTERS
The world we live in has never been smaller. We
communicate, travel to and do business with
the other side of the world in hours, minutes
and seconds. One thing that underpins it all is a
common language – English.
More research is published in English than any other language.
Schools around the word teach it, global digital communication
fuels it, international business runs on it, and companies large
and small have made it their corporate language. Almost two
billion people either speak English as their first or second
language or are learning to do so.
An Economist Intelligence Unit report – Competing Across
Borders1
– reveals just how important strong international
communication skills are to gaining a competitive edge
in business:
• 89% of companies agreed that better cross-border
communication improves profit, market share and revenue,
• 63% think a lack of clarity in their internal cross- border
communication often results in lost productivity,

• 49% of global executives cited significant losses as a direct
result of communication misunderstandings.
The message is clear: businesses that do not invest in
English training could weaken their position in the
international marketplace.
1 Download the report here: www.ef.com/eiu
Why English really
matters to companies
International trade does not happen on its own. Without
common understanding and clear cross-border communication
it simply wouldn’t happen at all. One language – English
– underpins everything. Those who embrace a strategic
approach to Business English can enjoy huge rewards:
• Better customer experience, loyalty and competitive advantage

• Lower operating costs and increased employee effectiveness

• Improved collaboration, innovation and knowledge sharing

• Lower corporate risks through clearer understanding

10
It may appear obvious, but the very best way
to learn a new language is with real teachers.
Having a teacher alongside you, whether
physically or virtually, providing help, structure,
encouragement and practice is still the best
way to improve your skills.
When you and your teacher are in the country of the language
you want to learn, you will speak, live and breathe that language
every day. “Immersive” Learning and the focus on speaking
(the “Communicative Model”) is the very vision on which EF
was first founded 50 years ago. It is the fastest way to learn a
new language; a fact as true today as it was then. Today EF has
a global network of more than 500 offices, schools, language
centers and Executive Language Institutes in 53 countries.
But not everyone has the time or budget to spend a few weeks
or months in another country. So, a few years ago, we set
ourselves the task of bringing an immersive and communicative
experience (and the teacher) to the student – wherever and
whenever they want it.
We hired thousands of the world’s best teachers and the most
innovative learning designers and developers. We applied
cutting edge technology and plugged in the most advanced
pedagogical thinking. The result? The most popular English
language school in the world; a school in the cloud, available
any time, night or day. Millions of learners and thousands of the
world’s most successful organizations rely on it daily for their
language needs. Now that “immersive” experience is available
to everyone, and that means the fastest language learning in the
most flexible way possible.
THE BEST WAY
TO LEARN
www.ef.com/corporate 11
For individuals it is all about
• CONVENIENCE: Busy professional people need
language training to be super-flexible and available
when their schedules allow.
• FLEXIBILITY: Everyone learns at a different pace,
often for different reasons or with different objectives.
The language program must meet every need.
• ENGAGEMENT: Our world has so many distractions,
especially as professionals. The language program must
stimulate, motivate and engage to ensure progress.
For organizations it is all about
• QUALITY: A consistent school for all means your
organization can be sure that every employee gets the
same high standard of training all the time.
• SCALABILITY: On-demand delivery means scalable
capacity that grows in line with needs, no matter
where in the world they may be
• MEASURABILITY: One consistent school, delivered
digitally, means lower total cost of ownership and
accurate spend measurement.
12
The EF MethodTM
Our language learning model –
the EF MethodTM
– is task-based
and focuses on dialogue and the
use of authentic language.
The student is shown how to LEARN new
language concepts during self-study time.
They immediately TRY them out in real-life
tasks and situations before ‘immersing’
themselves in a live conversation class with
a teacher to APPLY what they have learned.
They then embed what they have learned in
a private tutorial with a personal teacher
to focus on areas of improvement and
CERTIFY progress.
OUR PEDAGOGICAL
APPROACH
Academics agree that the best pedagogical
method of learning a language is through a
‘communicative approach’. This focuses on
using language in real conversation, rather than
an emphasis on vocabulary and grammar.
This approach has developed into practicing conversation in
real-life scenarios or ‘tasks’. EF has taken this approach even
further. We know that even the best task-based content has to
be complemented with two critical things, because without them
students simply give up:
1) Lots of conversation practice
2) Course structure and encouragement
And it is teachers who deliver these best. It’s why we spend so
much time hiring, training and investing in the best teachers
around the world. We don’t ask our teachers to teach in the
traditional sense and they don’t become EF TeachersTM
until they
have finished an intensive training of their own.
We pioneered an alternative approach to the “Traditional”
classroom, which is now accepted as the most effective way of
applying all types of structured learning. In our model, teachers
are not the ‘content trainer.’ They play the role of mentor, coach,
conversation practice partner and helper.
We call it ‘Flipped Learning’, and we’ve found that it really is
the fastest way to learn.
So what is Flipped Learning anyway?
There is something of a revolution going on
in the education sector.
For as long as anyone can remember, education systems have
been basically the same; subject-matter teachers stand at the
front of a classroom and try their best to convey new concepts
and new ideas. At the end of the class they set tasks, or
‘homework’ for students to practice what they have (or have
not) learned.
The problem is, if the student hasn’t understood the topic,
then no amount of homework will help, especially when the
subject matter expert (the teacher) isn’t there to help.
Leading academics now preach a new way of learning; a
way that flips this model around. ‘Homework’ and other
student-time should be used for learning new concepts
(normally from video tutorials, the internet and their own group
research). Class time is used most efficiently for practicing
and embedding new concepts with the teacher. The teacher
is there to help students on an individual basis, when they
need it the most. Teacher-led practice sessions are still at the
core of the flipped model, which means learning is embedded
more deeply. The teacher can set additional tasks for those
who find the topic easy, and provide personal tuition for those
who don’t. The teacher provides maximum support and
encouragement, keeping students on track, fully engaged with
the learning and progressing at a consistent rate.
Flipped learning has been at the core of our programs from the
very beginning. In our cloud-based school we offer unlimited
access to teacher-led conversation classes for speaking
practice and social interaction, as well as teacher checkpoints
at the end of each study unit for encouragement, support and
progress monitoring. We believe it is the future for language
learning and education.
14
OUR LEARNING
SYSTEM: EF EFEKTATM
50 years of experience has made EF experts in
what works (and what doesn’t) in language training.
We know that a flipped, task-based approach (the EF MethodTM
) is the best
way to learn. But we also know you need a few other things:
A) Teachers
Real, qualified teachers for conversation practice, structure
and encouragement.
B) Design & Technology
Cutting-edge design and smart technology that appeals and engages.
C) Content
Learning material that excites, motivates and can be tailored to individuals.
D) Academics
A process that defines course structures and curriculums, and provides
relevant progress checkpoints.
We have combined these four critical components with the
EF MethodTM
to create the world’s most advanced
approach to learning a language; the EF Efekta
SystemTM
. It underpins every language course we do.
15
A
Teacher-led learning – Live
EF Teachers™ are at the very heart of our schools. We only hire the best
– all our teachers have a minimum of two years teaching experience, are
native-level and hold a recognized teaching qualification. We train them
rigorously in our Efekta System™. Our students have unlimited access to
them, whenever they want – no need to book – because we know that the
more time they spend with them, the faster they learn. We also ‘flip’ extra
teacher time with one-to-one classes after every study unit, as standard. To
learn even faster, every course can be topped up with additional classes.
B
Cutting-edge design and innovation
Innovation really excites us, whether that means using the latest technology
and design principles, delivering new and compelling HD-content, or
providing our cloud-school on your smartphone. If it will make a difference,
we will find a way to deliver. Emphasis on learning design and constant
innovation in all our schools, means the very latest pedagogical research
and learning principles are in the DNA of our programs too. This guarantees
a future-proof learning program for your organization.
C
Tailored and engaging course content
Our cloud school has thousands of hours of ‘always available’ interactive
learning activities, in over 10,000 modules, across countless different
activity types. Updates every two weeks ensure content is always fresh,
engaging and topical. No other provider has the resources, or even comes
close to the breadth and depth of the learning content we develop.
Customized content meets every individual’s preference for how and what
they want to learn. Everyone can focus on the skills they need for their own
professional life.
D
Academic rigor and process
We pride ourselves in our team of world-renowned academics and
pedagogues, who work closely with our research partners in Cambridge,
Harvard, Beijing and Moscow (read more on page 30). Together, they ensure
that our course structures follow the best possible academic processes, that
our testing is second to none, and that our content is always the most engaging
and relevant there can be.

OUR PRODUCTS:
LANGUAGE PROGRAMS
How fast does each learner need
to progress?
Our language courses fall into four broad programs.
EF is the only company that can provide a full suite to
cater to any need. The most appropriate program for
an individual depends on urgency and the required
teaching style. For example, an executive with critically
urgent needs, and who is time-poor, may benefit
most from a short immersion course in one of our EF
Executive Language Institutes. University students
who do not have an urgent need for progress, but want
something very flexible to fit with their busy lives, may
find on-demand self-study courses more appropriate.
Whatever the need, EF has a course to fit.
The four programs are:
EF EXECUTIVE

Our study-abroad immersion courses provide the full experience of
living the culture and the language. Available at EF Language Centers
worldwide and at our exclusive EF Executive Language Institutes
(which include full access to our EnglishLive Premium programs), this
is the fastest and most effective way to learn a language.
EF PROFESSIONAL
Our semi-scheduled, teacher-guided courses combine
scheduled face-to-face EF TeacherTM
-led classes with the
flexibility of virtual learning through EnglishLive. They also include
unlimited conversation classes plus one-to-one classes after
every study unit. Because some parts of these courses require
the physical presence of students and teachers on a regular basis,
they are not appropriate for everyone, but do guarantee extra
face-time with EF TeachersTM
.
EF ENGLISHLIVE
Our teacher-guided, flexible (virtual) courses have become the
industry benchmark. They are quite simply the modern way to run
large-scale language programs. EnglishLive Premium provides
student-specific learning paths that impose no limits on access
to either course materials or EF Teachers™. We include private
(one-to-one) classes for every student after each unit of study, as
standard. Students can attend as many small-group conversation
classes as they like, whenever they like, at their level – no booking
required. EnglishLive Premium Plus offers all the benefits of
EnglishLive Premium with additional private classes for even more
intensive tuition or to focus on specific areas.
EF SOLO
Our self-study virtual courses cover General English as well as
specific industry and functional short courses. For General English
needs, students have full access to EF’s digital learning content
with EnglishLive Solo. EF Frontline Solo are courses for customer-
facing staff in specific industries such as hospitality and travel.

Knowing how you are progressing is critical to
learning a language. Without seeing real progress
in realistic timescales, learner confidence and
motivation can be undermined. That’s why EF
provides a unique suite of testing programs.
From rigorous school placement tests, such as our Business
English Skills Test (EF BEST) to end-of-level tests and the world’s
first free standardized English test known as the EFSET, EF has
the assessment tools for every requirement.
Free testing and assessment
through EFSETTM
In November 2014, EF introduced the world’s first free
standardized English test. Built to the same exacting standards
as other tests such as TOEFL, TOEIC and BULATS, EF’s
EFSETTM
is absolutely free.
Aligned to the internationally recognized standard, the Common
European Framework of References for Languages (CEFR), it
provides a standard measure of anyone’s English proficiency
level. It can be used for group-wide testing and needs
assessment in any organization at any scale.
Oral testing with EFSET SpeakingTM
EF also provides comprehensive oral testing, with assessments
by our EF TeachersTM
. EF EFSET Speaking, charged at a nominal
fee, assesses speaking and conversation skills. Results are
marked and returned by our EF TeachersTM
within 48 hours.

OUTSOURCING AND
ON-SITE SCHOOLS
As the world’s largest private education provider,
we have learned a lot about how to deliver
learning at any scale.
We know how to create the most engaging and effective
language programs, we know how to achieve maximum
business impact, and we know how to build and run schools in
whatever form they come – in the cloud, in our own centers or in
your offices.
EF Smartschool™ – your own
school on-site
We have built, delivered and run hundreds of schools around the
world. We know what it takes. For some, having a branded, high-
visibility school on company premises is an attractive option.
Having an EF Smartschool™ on-site is a viable option for large
organizations with significant learner needs in specific locations
who prefer to reduce costs and administration by trusting the
management of their language school to EF.
EF language outsourcing – fully outsourced
language training
Some of our customers trust EF with 100% of their language
program, facilities and staff. The reasons vary; from allowing
them to focus on their core business and improving financial
efficiency, to leveraging economies of scale, new technology
and innovation. We are a natural option and can provide all the

LEARNING FOR
EVERYONE
Like any strategic investment in people, investment in
language training should have a sound business reason.
Language is often only part of a wider development need. Management
and leadership skills are critical development priorities for an organization.
We understand this, so we segment language training into three broad
levels of competence:
Beginner: GENERAL LEARNING
For Beginners and Lower Intermediate levels (EF levels 1-6) it really is all
about learning the basics. We recommend “often and lots”; spending time
immersed in our learning content and school apps as often as possible,
allowing lots of time to practice with EF TeachersTM
. Even if just for a few
minutes, every ‘learning moment’ counts. We would normally recommend
focus on our General English curriculum content and plenty of practice in
Conversation Classes. For more urgent needs we recommend extra Private
Classes or a course in one of our Executive Language Institutes.
Intermediate: FUNCTIONAL LEARNING
For higher intermediate levels (EF levels 7-10) we encourage learners to
add Business English learning content around their specific professional
needs, either industry or job-specific. Developing their English skills in a
relevant context not only keeps learners more engaged and motivated, but
importantly it helps them apply their new skills back to their day job. We
also recommend practice in Conversation Classes and Private Classes after
each study unit. For more urgent needs, special private courses can be
delivered in our Executive Language Institutes.
Advanced: EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
For Advanced and Expert level learners (EF levels 11-16) it is no longer just
about learning English, but more about refining English communication
for management, leadership and other purposes. For this reason we
recommend our more challenging and ‘authentic’ content (e.g. based
on current world affairs). A language course can be combined with other
courses on management, leadership and other skills with our sister
organizations Hult and Ashridge.

STEP 1
Set objectives
What you do:
Identify your business objectives.
What we do:
• Provide a large body of best-practice as a basis
for recommendations.
• Work with you to define the learning program’s
objectives and success measures by determining your
organization’s specific needs.
• Analyze why, when, how and by whom English should be
used within your company and discuss ways to support
this strategy.
• Define overall objectives and create a corporate
framework to ensure an easy transition to a new or single
provider.
We align your business objectives with our know-
how to achieve the highest impact.
STEP 2
Assess needs
What you do:
Set aside time for key stakeholders to talk to EF and
for employees to take a short English test.
What we do:
• Assess needs and identify target populations and
language skills gaps through our proprietary Language
Competency Profile (LCP) model.
• Benchmark results against the EF English Proficiency
Index for comparison against global and
industry averages.
• Segment learners according to situations where
English is needed.
• Set learning goals for these learner segments.
This will ensure a next generation program that is
scalable and aligned to your changing needs.

DELIVERING SUCCESS
An organization-wide language program needs good planning,
design and excellent project management. It doesn’t have to
be complicated, but it does help to work with a partner that has
done it thousands of times before. This is why we have developed
a systematic program approach to project delivery that we call
Learning LogisticsTM
. This, along with our dedicated Customer
Success team, ensures you are supported every step of the way.

STEP 3
Tailor and deliver
What you do:
Study, study, study!
What we do:
• Tailor and deliver learning that matches your needs
with
the best training method. Students will have an easy and
engaging transition, supported by an on-boarding coach
and dynamic, “easy-next-steps” study plan.
• The scalability and flexibility of our school allows large
numbers of students to have a personalized experience.
The program is supported with services for both the
learner and the company as a whole.
This will drive program enrollment, adoption and
learning, to reach the language levels required by
your company globally and locally.
STEP 4
Track results
What you do:
Schedule regular meetings with your EF Customer
Success Manager to review overall progress.
What we do:
• Track results accurately to ensure program success.
• Monitor KPI performance and align it to your language
needs (identified in Step 2).
• Recommend changes and course corrections for
continuous improvement.
• Provide meaningful insight and strategic thinking as
your business objectives and goals evolve.
Your organizational goals are achieved through an
evolving corporate language program that meets
your needs today and tomorrow.
Stay on track
By feeding test and analysis results back into the
process, we ensure that the program remains
on track. Any problems, such as students
falling behind, are identified quickly.
The program continues to improve
throughout its life cycle.
26
We understand that training is of little value to your company
unless results are tangible. There must be measurable
outcomes and real impact on your organization. Learning
with EF does just that.
Fast progress...
Progress
Learners who study with EF
EnglishLive™ for just two hours per
week, join conversation classes
and private tutorials, improve
their English competency by one
level every 25 weeks on average.
Immersion in an EF Executive
Language Institute can deliver the
same progress in just 1-2 weeks.
Productivity
Our learners report that improved
English skills saves them two hours
per week on average.
Immediate return
93% of our learners feel that they
can apply their learning to their job
immediately, adding value to your
business straight away.
Efficiency
86% say improved English
skills help them to meet their job
goals faster.
...leads to...
MEASURABLE RESULTS
Confidence
87% report that English training
increases their confidence in their
role, so they are more likely to take
on additional responsibilities.
Competitive advantage
Our clients report improved
communication and teamwork,
better customer service and sales,
along with increased staff
motivation and engagement.
www.ef.com/corporate 27
Employee effectiveness
Often in
the form of time efficiency
savings, greater knowledge-sharing,
higher employee-engagement,
lower staff turnover and lower costs.
Greater flexibility
Competitiveness comes in many
forms, but customer-focus, market
expansion and company agility all
rely on clear communication. The
more international you are, the more
your success relies on language....a positive impact on your
business’ top and bottom
line
Reduced risks
Often overlooked, in some
industries poor communication
skills can be costly at best, and
at worst a matter of life and death.
Clear international communication
can lead to lower personal risk
(through better process and safety
procedures) and lower organization
risks such as those affected by
brand-advocacy.

THE MOST TRUSTED CHOICE
IN LANGUAGE TRAINING
Air China
Air China is the nation’s flag-carrier and
the most profitable airline in the world.
It has over 36,000 employees, 60 million
passengers and is a member of the
Star Alliance.
	 Air China recognized the rapid
globalization of the Aviation industry and
chose to embrace the English language
to improve communication and service.
Expanding routes and entry into the Star
Alliance created an immediate need for
large-scale language training.
EF partnered with Air China to
create a program to suit their business
objectives. The result was a training
policy with study targets for an initial
enrollment of over 1,200 people in EF
EnglishLiveTM
.
BDO
BDO, the fifth largest global accountancy
network with over 1,100 offices in 120
countries, uses EF EnglishLiveTM
to
provide a common language platform for
its world-wide processes.
	 BDO recognized the importance of
better English to improve communication
with clients and to offer a more efficient
consulting service. Learning English was
made a strategic goal for employees.
A key factor for BDO in selecting a
language training solution was that it
needed to offer employees the possibility
to study whenever and wherever they
liked. EF EnglishLiveTM
was therefore the
perfect match as it is available 24/7 with
teacher-led, virtual conversation classes
starting every 30 minutes.
AB InBev
AB InBev is the leading global brewer
and one of the world’s top five Food
& Beverage companies. It employs
150,000 people in 24 countries.
	 “Conducting business on a
global scale means that staff in our
organization need to have strong English
communication skills” says Linda Qian,
VP People at AB InBev APAC. The
company selected EF EnglishLiveTM
as the
solution to its language training needs.
“AB InBev was impressed by the
learning results. EF EnglishLiveTM
is
a cost-effective, efficient way to train
our staff. Improving their English has
certainly helped our employees to be
more productive,” says Ms Qian.
EF has an impressive record in language training. Our solutions are
synonymous with personal and corporate success. Our biggest
customers are the largest and most successful national and
multinational companies in the world and many of our learners are the
highest level executives.
www.ef.com/corporate 29
Atos
Atos is four years into a strategic
transformation to become a global leader
in the IT services industry. They asked EF
to provide a training program to help.
	 The need for English proficiency
has grown due to the development
of offshoring. “With large numbers of
people in India, Africa and Latin America,
the need for English language training
has increased,” Robin Ajdari, Vice
President for Learning & Development
at Atos explains. With Atos dedicated
to providing global services, client
communication is another driver of
language skills. “[Poor English] would
be detrimental both to the service we
provide and further development of our
business,” Ajdari says.
Aeroflot
Aeroflot, the flag carrier and largest
airline of the Russian Federation, chose
EF Corporate Solutions as the preferred
language training provider for 1,500 of its
client-facing and operational employees.
	 They realized the importance of
improved English skills to provide better
levels of service and safety in the air and
on the ground.
Aeroflot chose EF as they were
searching for a truly global provider with
an excellent reputation and best-in-
class project management support. EF
EnglishLiveTM
was a perfect fit as it allows
staff to fit studies around their flight times
– they can log in and study for just a few
minutes if that’s all they can spare.

  • 8. 8 WHY ENGLISH REALLY MATTERS The world we live in has never been smaller. We communicate, travel to and do business with the other side of the world in hours, minutes and seconds. One thing that underpins it all is a common language – English. More research is published in English than any other language. Schools around the word teach it, global digital communication fuels it, international business runs on it, and companies large and small have made it their corporate language. Almost two billion people either speak English as their first or second language or are learning to do so. An Economist Intelligence Unit report – Competing Across Borders1 – reveals just how important strong international communication skills are to gaining a competitive edge in business: • 89% of companies agreed that better cross-border communication improves profit, market share and revenue, • 63% think a lack of clarity in their internal cross- border communication often results in lost productivity,
 • 49% of global executives cited significant losses as a direct result of communication misunderstandings. The message is clear: businesses that do not invest in English training could weaken their position in the international marketplace. 1 Download the report here: www.ef.com/eiu
  • 9. Why English really matters to companies International trade does not happen on its own. Without common understanding and clear cross-border communication it simply wouldn’t happen at all. One language – English – underpins everything. Those who embrace a strategic approach to Business English can enjoy huge rewards: • Better customer experience, loyalty and competitive advantage
 • Lower operating costs and increased employee effectiveness
 • Improved collaboration, innovation and knowledge sharing
 • Lower corporate risks through clearer understanding

  • 10. 10 It may appear obvious, but the very best way to learn a new language is with real teachers. Having a teacher alongside you, whether physically or virtually, providing help, structure, encouragement and practice is still the best way to improve your skills. When you and your teacher are in the country of the language you want to learn, you will speak, live and breathe that language every day. “Immersive” Learning and the focus on speaking (the “Communicative Model”) is the very vision on which EF was first founded 50 years ago. It is the fastest way to learn a new language; a fact as true today as it was then. Today EF has a global network of more than 500 offices, schools, language centers and Executive Language Institutes in 53 countries. But not everyone has the time or budget to spend a few weeks or months in another country. So, a few years ago, we set ourselves the task of bringing an immersive and communicative experience (and the teacher) to the student – wherever and whenever they want it. We hired thousands of the world’s best teachers and the most innovative learning designers and developers. We applied cutting edge technology and plugged in the most advanced pedagogical thinking. The result? The most popular English language school in the world; a school in the cloud, available any time, night or day. Millions of learners and thousands of the world’s most successful organizations rely on it daily for their language needs. Now that “immersive” experience is available to everyone, and that means the fastest language learning in the most flexible way possible. THE BEST WAY TO LEARN
  • 11. www.ef.com/corporate 11 For individuals it is all about • CONVENIENCE: Busy professional people need language training to be super-flexible and available when their schedules allow. • FLEXIBILITY: Everyone learns at a different pace, often for different reasons or with different objectives. The language program must meet every need. • ENGAGEMENT: Our world has so many distractions, especially as professionals. The language program must stimulate, motivate and engage to ensure progress. For organizations it is all about • QUALITY: A consistent school for all means your organization can be sure that every employee gets the same high standard of training all the time. • SCALABILITY: On-demand delivery means scalable capacity that grows in line with needs, no matter where in the world they may be • MEASURABILITY: One consistent school, delivered digitally, means lower total cost of ownership and accurate spend measurement.
  • 12. 12 The EF MethodTM Our language learning model – the EF MethodTM – is task-based and focuses on dialogue and the use of authentic language. The student is shown how to LEARN new language concepts during self-study time. They immediately TRY them out in real-life tasks and situations before ‘immersing’ themselves in a live conversation class with a teacher to APPLY what they have learned. They then embed what they have learned in a private tutorial with a personal teacher to focus on areas of improvement and CERTIFY progress. OUR PEDAGOGICAL APPROACH Academics agree that the best pedagogical method of learning a language is through a ‘communicative approach’. This focuses on using language in real conversation, rather than an emphasis on vocabulary and grammar. This approach has developed into practicing conversation in real-life scenarios or ‘tasks’. EF has taken this approach even further. We know that even the best task-based content has to be complemented with two critical things, because without them students simply give up: 1) Lots of conversation practice 2) Course structure and encouragement And it is teachers who deliver these best. It’s why we spend so much time hiring, training and investing in the best teachers around the world. We don’t ask our teachers to teach in the traditional sense and they don’t become EF TeachersTM until they have finished an intensive training of their own. We pioneered an alternative approach to the “Traditional” classroom, which is now accepted as the most effective way of applying all types of structured learning. In our model, teachers are not the ‘content trainer.’ They play the role of mentor, coach, conversation practice partner and helper. We call it ‘Flipped Learning’, and we’ve found that it really is the fastest way to learn.
  • 13. So what is Flipped Learning anyway? There is something of a revolution going on in the education sector. For as long as anyone can remember, education systems have been basically the same; subject-matter teachers stand at the front of a classroom and try their best to convey new concepts and new ideas. At the end of the class they set tasks, or ‘homework’ for students to practice what they have (or have not) learned. The problem is, if the student hasn’t understood the topic, then no amount of homework will help, especially when the subject matter expert (the teacher) isn’t there to help. Leading academics now preach a new way of learning; a way that flips this model around. ‘Homework’ and other student-time should be used for learning new concepts (normally from video tutorials, the internet and their own group research). Class time is used most efficiently for practicing and embedding new concepts with the teacher. The teacher is there to help students on an individual basis, when they need it the most. Teacher-led practice sessions are still at the core of the flipped model, which means learning is embedded more deeply. The teacher can set additional tasks for those who find the topic easy, and provide personal tuition for those who don’t. The teacher provides maximum support and encouragement, keeping students on track, fully engaged with the learning and progressing at a consistent rate. Flipped learning has been at the core of our programs from the very beginning. In our cloud-based school we offer unlimited access to teacher-led conversation classes for speaking practice and social interaction, as well as teacher checkpoints at the end of each study unit for encouragement, support and progress monitoring. We believe it is the future for language learning and education.
  • 14. 14 OUR LEARNING SYSTEM: EF EFEKTATM 50 years of experience has made EF experts in what works (and what doesn’t) in language training. We know that a flipped, task-based approach (the EF MethodTM ) is the best way to learn. But we also know you need a few other things: A) Teachers Real, qualified teachers for conversation practice, structure and encouragement. B) Design & Technology Cutting-edge design and smart technology that appeals and engages. C) Content Learning material that excites, motivates and can be tailored to individuals. D) Academics A process that defines course structures and curriculums, and provides relevant progress checkpoints. We have combined these four critical components with the EF MethodTM to create the world’s most advanced approach to learning a language; the EF Efekta SystemTM . It underpins every language course we do.
  • 15. 15 A Teacher-led learning – Live EF Teachers™ are at the very heart of our schools. We only hire the best – all our teachers have a minimum of two years teaching experience, are native-level and hold a recognized teaching qualification. We train them rigorously in our Efekta System™. Our students have unlimited access to them, whenever they want – no need to book – because we know that the more time they spend with them, the faster they learn. We also ‘flip’ extra teacher time with one-to-one classes after every study unit, as standard. To learn even faster, every course can be topped up with additional classes. B Cutting-edge design and innovation Innovation really excites us, whether that means using the latest technology and design principles, delivering new and compelling HD-content, or providing our cloud-school on your smartphone. If it will make a difference, we will find a way to deliver. Emphasis on learning design and constant innovation in all our schools, means the very latest pedagogical research and learning principles are in the DNA of our programs too. This guarantees a future-proof learning program for your organization. C Tailored and engaging course content Our cloud school has thousands of hours of ‘always available’ interactive learning activities, in over 10,000 modules, across countless different activity types. Updates every two weeks ensure content is always fresh, engaging and topical. No other provider has the resources, or even comes close to the breadth and depth of the learning content we develop. Customized content meets every individual’s preference for how and what they want to learn. Everyone can focus on the skills they need for their own professional life. D Academic rigor and process We pride ourselves in our team of world-renowned academics and pedagogues, who work closely with our research partners in Cambridge, Harvard, Beijing and Moscow (read more on page 30). Together, they ensure that our course structures follow the best possible academic processes, that our testing is second to none, and that our content is always the most engaging and relevant there can be.
  • 16. 16 OUR PRODUCTS: LANGUAGE PROGRAMS How fast does each learner need to progress? Our language courses fall into four broad programs. EF is the only company that can provide a full suite to cater to any need. The most appropriate program for an individual depends on urgency and the required teaching style. For example, an executive with critically urgent needs, and who is time-poor, may benefit most from a short immersion course in one of our EF Executive Language Institutes. University students who do not have an urgent need for progress, but want something very flexible to fit with their busy lives, may find on-demand self-study courses more appropriate. Whatever the need, EF has a course to fit. The four programs are: EF EXECUTIVE
Our study-abroad immersion courses provide the full experience of living the culture and the language. Available at EF Language Centers worldwide and at our exclusive EF Executive Language Institutes (which include full access to our EnglishLive Premium programs), this is the fastest and most effective way to learn a language. EF PROFESSIONAL Our semi-scheduled, teacher-guided courses combine scheduled face-to-face EF TeacherTM -led classes with the flexibility of virtual learning through EnglishLive. They also include unlimited conversation classes plus one-to-one classes after every study unit. Because some parts of these courses require the physical presence of students and teachers on a regular basis, they are not appropriate for everyone, but do guarantee extra face-time with EF TeachersTM . EF ENGLISHLIVE Our teacher-guided, flexible (virtual) courses have become the industry benchmark. They are quite simply the modern way to run large-scale language programs. EnglishLive Premium provides student-specific learning paths that impose no limits on access to either course materials or EF Teachers™. We include private (one-to-one) classes for every student after each unit of study, as standard. Students can attend as many small-group conversation classes as they like, whenever they like, at their level – no booking required. EnglishLive Premium Plus offers all the benefits of EnglishLive Premium with additional private classes for even more intensive tuition or to focus on specific areas. EF SOLO Our self-study virtual courses cover General English as well as specific industry and functional short courses. For General English needs, students have full access to EF’s digital learning content with EnglishLive Solo. EF Frontline Solo are courses for customer- facing staff in specific industries such as hospitality and travel.

  • 18. 18 Knowing how you are progressing is critical to learning a language. Without seeing real progress in realistic timescales, learner confidence and motivation can be undermined. That’s why EF provides a unique suite of testing programs. From rigorous school placement tests, such as our Business English Skills Test (EF BEST) to end-of-level tests and the world’s first free standardized English test known as the EFSET, EF has the assessment tools for every requirement. Free testing and assessment through EFSETTM In November 2014, EF introduced the world’s first free standardized English test. Built to the same exacting standards as other tests such as TOEFL, TOEIC and BULATS, EF’s EFSETTM is absolutely free. Aligned to the internationally recognized standard, the Common European Framework of References for Languages (CEFR), it provides a standard measure of anyone’s English proficiency level. It can be used for group-wide testing and needs assessment in any organization at any scale. Oral testing with EFSET SpeakingTM EF also provides comprehensive oral testing, with assessments by our EF TeachersTM . EF EFSET Speaking, charged at a nominal fee, assesses speaking and conversation skills. Results are marked and returned by our EF TeachersTM within 48 hours. OUR PRODUCTS: LANGUAGE TESTING

  • 22. 22 LEARNING FOR EVERYONE Like any strategic investment in people, investment in language training should have a sound business reason. Language is often only part of a wider development need. Management and leadership skills are critical development priorities for an organization. We understand this, so we segment language training into three broad levels of competence: Beginner: GENERAL LEARNING For Beginners and Lower Intermediate levels (EF levels 1-6) it really is all about learning the basics. We recommend “often and lots”; spending time immersed in our learning content and school apps as often as possible, allowing lots of time to practice with EF TeachersTM . Even if just for a few minutes, every ‘learning moment’ counts. We would normally recommend focus on our General English curriculum content and plenty of practice in Conversation Classes. For more urgent needs we recommend extra Private Classes or a course in one of our Executive Language Institutes. Intermediate: FUNCTIONAL LEARNING For higher intermediate levels (EF levels 7-10) we encourage learners to add Business English learning content around their specific professional needs, either industry or job-specific. Developing their English skills in a relevant context not only keeps learners more engaged and motivated, but importantly it helps them apply their new skills back to their day job. We also recommend practice in Conversation Classes and Private Classes after each study unit. For more urgent needs, special private courses can be delivered in our Executive Language Institutes. Advanced: EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING For Advanced and Expert level learners (EF levels 11-16) it is no longer just about learning English, but more about refining English communication for management, leadership and other purposes. For this reason we recommend our more challenging and ‘authentic’ content (e.g. based on current world affairs). A language course can be combined with other courses on management, leadership and other skills with our sister organizations Hult and Ashridge. 3 2 1

  • 24. 24 STEP 1 Set objectives What you do: Identify your business objectives. What we do: • Provide a large body of best-practice as a basis for recommendations. • Work with you to define the learning program’s objectives and success measures by determining your organization’s specific needs. • Analyze why, when, how and by whom English should be used within your company and discuss ways to support this strategy. • Define overall objectives and create a corporate framework to ensure an easy transition to a new or single provider. We align your business objectives with our know- how to achieve the highest impact. STEP 2 Assess needs What you do: Set aside time for key stakeholders to talk to EF and for employees to take a short English test. What we do: • Assess needs and identify target populations and language skills gaps through our proprietary Language Competency Profile (LCP) model. • Benchmark results against the EF English Proficiency Index for comparison against global and industry averages. • Segment learners according to situations where English is needed. • Set learning goals for these learner segments. This will ensure a next generation program that is scalable and aligned to your changing needs. L E A R N I N G DELIVERING SUCCESS An organization-wide language program needs good planning, design and excellent project management. It doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does help to work with a partner that has done it thousands of times before. This is why we have developed a systematic program approach to project delivery that we call Learning LogisticsTM . This, along with our dedicated Customer Success team, ensures you are supported every step of the way.
  • 25. www.ef.com/corporate 25 L O G I S T I C S T M STEP 3 Tailor and deliver What you do: Study, study, study! What we do: • Tailor and deliver learning that matches your needs
with the best training method. Students will have an easy and engaging transition, supported by an on-boarding coach and dynamic, “easy-next-steps” study plan. • The scalability and flexibility of our school allows large numbers of students to have a personalized experience. The program is supported with services for both the learner and the company as a whole. This will drive program enrollment, adoption and learning, to reach the language levels required by your company globally and locally. STEP 4 Track results What you do: Schedule regular meetings with your EF Customer Success Manager to review overall progress. What we do: • Track results accurately to ensure program success. • Monitor KPI performance and align it to your language needs (identified in Step 2). • Recommend changes and course corrections for continuous improvement. • Provide meaningful insight and strategic thinking as your business objectives and goals evolve. Your organizational goals are achieved through an evolving corporate language program that meets your needs today and tomorrow. Stay on track By feeding test and analysis results back into the process, we ensure that the program remains on track. Any problems, such as students falling behind, are identified quickly. The program continues to improve throughout its life cycle.
  • 26. 26 We understand that training is of little value to your company unless results are tangible. There must be measurable outcomes and real impact on your organization. Learning with EF does just that. Fast progress... Progress Learners who study with EF EnglishLive™ for just two hours per week, join conversation classes and private tutorials, improve their English competency by one level every 25 weeks on average. Immersion in an EF Executive Language Institute can deliver the same progress in just 1-2 weeks. Productivity Our learners report that improved English skills saves them two hours per week on average. Immediate return 93% of our learners feel that they can apply their learning to their job immediately, adding value to your business straight away. Efficiency 86% say improved English skills help them to meet their job goals faster. ...leads to... MEASURABLE RESULTS Confidence 87% report that English training increases their confidence in their role, so they are more likely to take on additional responsibilities. Competitive advantage Our clients report improved communication and teamwork, better customer service and sales, along with increased staff motivation and engagement.
  • 27. www.ef.com/corporate 27 Employee effectiveness Often in
the form of time efficiency savings, greater knowledge-sharing, higher employee-engagement, lower staff turnover and lower costs. Greater flexibility Competitiveness comes in many forms, but customer-focus, market expansion and company agility all rely on clear communication. The more international you are, the more your success relies on language....a positive impact on your business’ top and bottom line Reduced risks Often overlooked, in some industries poor communication skills can be costly at best, and at worst a matter of life and death. Clear international communication can lead to lower personal risk (through better process and safety procedures) and lower organization risks such as those affected by brand-advocacy.
  • 28. 28 THE MOST TRUSTED CHOICE IN LANGUAGE TRAINING Air China Air China is the nation’s flag-carrier and the most profitable airline in the world. It has over 36,000 employees, 60 million passengers and is a member of the Star Alliance. Air China recognized the rapid globalization of the Aviation industry and chose to embrace the English language to improve communication and service. Expanding routes and entry into the Star Alliance created an immediate need for large-scale language training. EF partnered with Air China to create a program to suit their business objectives. The result was a training policy with study targets for an initial enrollment of over 1,200 people in EF EnglishLiveTM . BDO BDO, the fifth largest global accountancy network with over 1,100 offices in 120 countries, uses EF EnglishLiveTM to provide a common language platform for its world-wide processes. BDO recognized the importance of better English to improve communication with clients and to offer a more efficient consulting service. Learning English was made a strategic goal for employees. A key factor for BDO in selecting a language training solution was that it needed to offer employees the possibility to study whenever and wherever they liked. EF EnglishLiveTM was therefore the perfect match as it is available 24/7 with teacher-led, virtual conversation classes starting every 30 minutes. AB InBev AB InBev is the leading global brewer and one of the world’s top five Food & Beverage companies. It employs 150,000 people in 24 countries. “Conducting business on a global scale means that staff in our organization need to have strong English communication skills” says Linda Qian, VP People at AB InBev APAC. The company selected EF EnglishLiveTM as the solution to its language training needs. “AB InBev was impressed by the learning results. EF EnglishLiveTM is a cost-effective, efficient way to train our staff. Improving their English has certainly helped our employees to be more productive,” says Ms Qian. EF has an impressive record in language training. Our solutions are synonymous with personal and corporate success. Our biggest customers are the largest and most successful national and multinational companies in the world and many of our learners are the highest level executives.
  • 29. www.ef.com/corporate 29 Atos Atos is four years into a strategic transformation to become a global leader in the IT services industry. They asked EF to provide a training program to help. The need for English proficiency has grown due to the development of offshoring. “With large numbers of people in India, Africa and Latin America, the need for English language training has increased,” Robin Ajdari, Vice President for Learning & Development at Atos explains. With Atos dedicated to providing global services, client communication is another driver of language skills. “[Poor English] would be detrimental both to the service we provide and further development of our business,” Ajdari says. Aeroflot Aeroflot, the flag carrier and largest airline of the Russian Federation, chose EF Corporate Solutions as the preferred language training provider for 1,500 of its client-facing and operational employees. They realized the importance of improved English skills to provide better levels of service and safety in the air and on the ground. Aeroflot chose EF as they were searching for a truly global provider with an excellent reputation and best-in- class project management support. EF EnglishLiveTM was a perfect fit as it allows staff to fit studies around their flight times – they can log in and study for just a few minutes if that’s all they can spare.
