D/2 is a quaternary ammonium solution with surfactants and buffering agents. It has been extensively tested in a 6 year study funded by the Veteran’s Administration and conducted by the National Park Service and Harvard University. It is now used by the NPS and Veteran's Administration to clean headstones and monuments around the country.

In 2007 D/2 was used to clean the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. The specifier was Wiss Janney Elstner. The contractor was Mark 1

Developed by Ted Kinnari ( with assistance from Professor Norman Weiss of Columbia University) in the early 90’s as a result of being hired to write cleaning specification for the cleaning of the ceiling of Grand Central Terminal (at 4 acres, the largest mural in the world).
…all of these can be harmful to the material you are trying to clean or to the people doing the cleaning.
D/2 is biodegradable and won’t harm plants.
It’s pH neutral, so it won’t damage things like other harsh chemical cleaners.
It’s also not harmful to humans so, you don’t need a lot of special gear to use it.
No more harmful effects from power washing.
No more killing off the petunias!
The National Park Service at the request of the Veterans Administration completed a 6-year definitive study on the best means and methods to clean monuments and headstones. Conclusion: D/2 Biological Solution is the recommended product for monuments and headstone cleaning. Now all 3.5 million veteran headstones are cleaned with D/2.

Biological Growth and polutants
Biological growth and pollutants can also damage the substrate by creating acidic environments and retaining moisture. Both contribute to hastening deterioration
Biological Growth is usually present because it is feeding on the subsurface. Bio growth is acidic (harmful to stone, wood, and a host of other materials) and holds moisture that encourages more biological growth. D/2 eliminates this without damage to surrounding plants or noxious chemicals.
Because D/2 is simple to use and importantly will “do no harm” it is often used by volunteers to clean monuments and headstones. In this photo taken in 2009 the cadets at the Annapolis Navel Academy
“voluntered” to clean all the headstones in the Academy Cemetery.
Spray and Scrub (for immediate results)
Spray and Walk Away (for those willing to wait)
Photo: In 2008 we donated D/2 to the US Navel Academy. 250 Freshman cadets “volunteered”. Using the Spray & Srcub method the entire cemetery was cleaned in one day
