Documentary analysis v2
1.
2. The documentary is mixed meaning it includes
several interviews, archive and observational footage
as well as narration through out. This is one of the
several documentary types the other being: Fully
Narrated, Fly On The Wall, Self Reflexive,
Documentary Drama and Documentary Soap.
The Themes involved is disease, population, poverty
and medicine. Because of the structure of this mixed
documentary it can cover all the themes whilst
sticking to an overarching topic, mosquitoes.
A mixed documentary gets the most easily viewable
content as it involves almost every piece of
documentary convention so it makes the viewers
mopre likely to like some part of it.
3. The documentary has an open structure
meaning the topic discussed within is
ongoing and as malaria is still a problem in
ledc’s therefore it is still an issue. The other
commonly used structure would be closed.
This is where the topic being discussed has
come to conclusion and either been solved or
resolved to some degree where it is not
necessary to continue.
4. The documentary includes many
observational shots and archive footage. The
interviews all included mostly mid close ups
or close ups following the codes and
conventions.
The observational and archive shots would
have either been filmed with stationary
camera on a trip pod. In addition some were
filmed as a birds eye view having an
establishing shot type of use within the
documentary.
5. All that's on the screen is relevant to the topic including
the background to the interviews and the cutaways used
after the interviewee has been asked a question and it has
been answered.
The mise-en-scene can include anything on the screen
whether that is lighting make up or costumes. In this
particular case most of the light will have been natural
however for some interviews they will use artificial soft
lighting for ambience.
The clothes wont have been costumes however just
something that the subject wore normally or to do with
their profession. The make up they will have had on will
have been dry makeup to just take the shine off their face
so they are more easily seen on camera and the reflection
off the lights wont reflect on sweat or water.
6. Insect noises are more than likely diegetic
however they could also be added post
filming in the editing stage. The narration is
all non diegetic.
Sound bridges on interviews and cutaways
will help make the interviews run easier by
cutting away silence therefore keeping the
pace of the documentary up and keeping
viewers interested.
