POLITICAL PLUNGE
ormer Reserve Bank
of India Governor
Raghuram Rajan
joining Rahul Gan-
dhi’s Bharat Jodo
Yatra, however briefly, in Ra-
jasthan has brought his political
leanings in the open. The former
Governor has always been criti-
cal of the BJP government’s eco-
nomic policies but earlier his
views were taken to be that of an
academician and economist.
Now onwards his opinions will
be looked at as biased political
views. The BJP attacked Rajan
with the retort that he wants “to
be another Manmohan Singh”
who, incidentally
, is still regard-
ed as a highly rated economist.
Amit Malviya, BJP’s IT Cell
chief,saidthatRajan’s“commen-
tary on the Indian economy…is
coloured and opportunistic”.
The criticism will not dilute
the significance of the event as
Rajan is an eminent economist
and will bolster the appeal of Ra-
hul Gandhi’s march. The ques-
tion that many would seek an
answer to is whether Rajan, who
has been a strong critic of de-
monetisation, will join the Con-
gress or support it from outside.

F
hina’s provoca-
tive action along
the Line of Actual
Control in Ta-
wang has raised
temperatures between the
two countries. The People’s
Liberation Army (PLA) at-
tempting to occupy vantage
positions in the Yangtse area
of Tawang in Arunachal
Pradesh were effectively
pushed back by the Indian
soldiers after a skirmish in
which a few soldiers suffered
injuries but that won’t deter
the Chinese from attempting
another transgression either
in Ladakh or in Tawang.
Union Defence Minister
Rajnath Singh’s statement in
Parliament that the “Indian
Army bravely prevented the
PLA from transgressing into
our territory and compelled
them to return to their posts”
did not satisfy Oppn which
insisted on a discussion on
repeated Chinese aggression.
The govt did not accede to the
demand leading to a walkout
by the Opposition. The de-
mand was also made after a
more violent clash in Galwan
Valley in 2020 in which many
soldiers were killed.
The disengagement hap-
pened after several rounds of
talks between the army com-
manders of both sides but
Chinese build-up in Ladakh
remains a worrying factor.
Even in Yangtse area there is
nothing new about Chinese
transgression. In 2021 Chi-
nese launched an aggression
with sizable number of troops
which too was repulsed.
The status quo along LAC
is not a very comforting idea
because of China’s attempts
to open new flashpoints along
LAC whether in the east or in
Ladakh. It is this unpredict-
ability of PLA that has made
Oppn seek clarification from
the govt on the actual situa-
tion along the border which
the Chinese say is stable.

C
he 2022 FIFA World Cup has
certainly attracted plenty of
negative press, with scandal
frombiddingprocessthrough
to the tournament itself. Yet
out of this negativity, one
positive storyline has arisen.
With victories over two re-
cent European champions –
Spain and Portugal – Moroc-
co have become the first Afri-
can nation to reach the last
four of the World Cup.
MAPPING A PATH TO
THE FINAL
Could the location of the tour-
nament itself partially ex-
plaintheMoroccans’surprise
progress?WhenanAsianside
– South Korea in 2002 - simi-
larly broke the duopoly of
Europe and the Americas, it
was on home soil.
An African squad would
have made it to the semifi-
nals 12 years ago in the first
World Cup to be hosted on
that continent, if not for one
of the most infamously un-
sporting acts in the game’s
history, at the hands (literal-
ly) of Uruguay’s Luis Suarez.
Now the World Cup is
played in the Arab world for
the first time and, perhaps
not coincidentally
, we are see-
ing a nation from the region
reach unprecedented heights.
GEOGRAPHY COULD
MATTER MORE THAN
WE THINK
In 21 previous tournaments,
only three teams have lifted
the trophy without being ei-
ther hosts or a prior cham-
pion. One of those – West
Germany in 1954 – did so in a
neighbouring country. Be-
fore 2010, no European na-
tion had won the tournament
outside Europe and only one
non-European nation had
won on the continent.
This trend is also seen in
continental competitions.
The European Champion-
ships’ two biggest shocks
were Denmark’s 1992 success
after initially failing to qual-
ify, and the 2004 champion-
ship of rank outsiders
Greece. The Danes’ victory
came in another Scandina-
vian nation, and the Greek
success was in another Medi-
terranean country
.
Of course, none of this is
directly causal. The Moroc-
cans have certainly not
reached this lofty stage be-
cause the tournament is in a
fellow Arab country. As a
low-scoring, complex team
game, football is one of the
hardest sports to predict and
every little advantage, even
as small as being in a compa-
rable climate, could tip the
balance of a game one way or
another.
PARALLELS WITH
OTHER NATIONS
When looking at historical
data, the clearest predictor
of whichsidesmaybeprimed
to perform better than ever
before is their latitude rela-
tive to the tournament host.
For example, Paraguay’s best
run was in South Africa in
2010, at similar latitude, rath-
er than in geographically
closer South American na-
tions further south.
Of the 39 nations to reach
the tournament at least six
times, 23 of those have never
bettered their performance
at the tournament closest to
their home latitude. Almost
three-quarters of sides’ best
tournaments involved travel
less than 10 degrees either
north or south.
THE “WORLD” GAME?
Even with its huge global ap-
peal, football has been his-
torically slanted towards Eu-
rope and the Americas,
which may have stifled pro-
gress of the game in other
regions.
Despite its numerous on-
going flaws, the administra-
tion has come a long way
since the absurd situation in
1958 when the one place des-
ignated for a team from the
Asian and African regions
was taken by Wales.
Morocco’s fairytale run
should certainly be seen as a
huge positive for the game in
North Africa, in particular.
There do remain numerous
“blind spots” in where tour-
naments have been held.
Rio de Janeiro, where the
1950 and 2010 finals were
held, lies within one degree
of the Tropic of Capricorn.
Amazingly, if you travel
north from there, you will
only find one World Cup final
venue (Mexico City) south of
Doha.
A SPORTING CHANCE
Criticisms of the process and
politics underlying the 2022
World Cup cannot be over-
looked, but the decision to
broaden the geographic foot-
print of host nations can at
least be seen as a positive
step towards a more reason-
able distribution of sporting
advantage.

Congress is worried about
Amethi and Rae Bareli
Shamsher Singh
New Delhi: The two
traditional Lok Sabha
seats of Gandhis - Am-
ethi and Rae Bareli - are
a majro cause of worry
for the grandold party
and the party’s first
family - Gandhi family.
These seats have been
held by the family for
decades but in the last
election BJP’s Smriti
Irani defeated Rahul
Gandhi in Amethi seat.
Rahul’s team had an
idea of this in advance,
so he contested from the
Wayanad seat in Kerala,
from where he is now an
MP. Therefore, now the
big question is whether
Rahul Gandhi will con-
test from Amethi this
time or not? If he fights,
will he fight from only
one seat or will we fight
from both Amethi and
Wayanad seats?
Keep in mind that no
member of the Nehru-
Gandhi family has lost
two consecutive elec-
tions. Indira Gandhi was
also defeated from Rae
Bareli, then won from
Chikmagalur in the by-
election and did not lose
again after that. Sonia
Gandhi has not lost any
election. Rahul has also
beencontestingelections
since 2004 and lost from
Amethi for the first time
in2019.Sothefamilycan-
not take the risk that he
contests rom Amethi
again and loses. The cur-
rent situation in Uttar
Pradesh is not very good
for the Congress. The
BJPisridingonthewave
of HindutvaandtheCon-
gress and the first family
have also left both the re-
gions. On the other hand
BJP and Smriti Irani are
active in both the areas.
As far as Rae Bareli is
concerned, it is almost
certain that Sonia Gan-
dhi will not contest the
elections this time. Her
health is also not good
andafterleavingthepost

is why it is believed that
this time Priyanka Gan-

from Sonia’s seat. Con-

about that seat but the

Amethi: Rahul Gandhi would contest the 2024 Lok Sabha
elections again from Amethi with which the Nehru-Gan-
dhi family has old ties, Uttar Pradesh Congress leader
Ajay Rai claimed on Wednesday. Rai, the regional head of
the party in UP, also said that it is his appeal to the people
of Amethi to send Rahul Gandhi to Delhi by electing him
as an MP again with a huge margin. “The Gandhi-Nehru
family has old relations with Amethi...no one can weaken
it. Rahul Gandhi will contest from Amethi in 2024,” Rai
told reporters here. There has been no word from the
party so far on the former Congress president fighting
the next parliamentary elections again from Amethi. Ra-
hul Gandhi, who had won the Amethi parliamentary seat
for three times in a row, was defeated by BJP leader and
Union minister Smriti Irani in 2019 elections.
SUKHU’S ELEVATION A SIGN OF
CHANGING TIMES IN CONGRESS?
Mahesh Sharma
Shimla: Sukhvinder
Singh Sukhu becoming
the Chief Minister in
Himachal Pradesh is a
big deal for the Con-
gress in many respects.
He is the first such lead-
er who was made the
state president by Rahul
Gandhi and has now be-
come the Chief Minis-
ter. Keep in mind that
when the Congress par-
ty was in power at the
center, Rahul Gandhi
promoted many leaders.
He made many young
leaders ministers in the
center. But barring a
few exceptions, all the
youths were sons of one
or the other prominent
leader. Many of them
conducted major fraud
with Rahul and Con-
gress. Rahul also made
many young leaders as
state presidents, but
many of them also
cheated. However, no
member of his youth
team had yet become
the chief minister.
Sukhuisthefirstlead-
er who was made the
President of Himachal
Pradesh by Rahul Gan-
dhi despite opposition
from the old leaders of
the party and now he
has become the Chief
Minister. Rahul had giv-
en Sukhu a go-ahead de-
spite opposition from
the then Chief Minister
Virbhadra Singh. Was
made the president in
2013. Also worth noting
is the fact that Sukhu
does not come from a po-
litical family
. He is the
son of a simple bus driv-
er. Barring two or three
exceptions, Rahul has
always promoted and
been cheated by mem-
bers of big political fam-
ilies. So, now there is a
new beginning. Instead
of people coming from
well-known political dy-
nasties and rich fami-
lies,peoplefromhumble
background have start-
ed going to higher posi-
tions in Congress and
this can be a good sign
for Congress.

Raghuram Rajan: India witnessing

Sawai Madhopur: For-
mer governor of Re-
serve Bank of India
Raghuram Rajan who
joined Rahul Gandhi’s
‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ on
Wednesday said that the
country is also having a
new kind of green revo-
lution which is in sus-
tainability, emission,
and India can be on fore-
front in building wind-
mills, making buildings
green looking at the
challenge of climate
change.
On Gandhi’s point
that 4-5 industrialists
are getting richer, the
rest of the country is
behind, a set of indus-
trialists have a separate
‘Hindustan’ while the
farmersandothershave
another ‘Hindustan’,
Rajan said that this is a
big problem but it is not
about capitalists.
He also appreciated
Rahul Gandhi’s move of
Bharat Jodo Yatra say-
ing that ‘Bharat ko Jod-
na hai’. Rajan said that
the income of the upper
middle class increased
because they could
work from home during
the pandemic but those
who worked in factories
lost earning because
they could not earn.
“So this divide in-
creased in the pandem-
ic. Rich had no prob-
lem, the lower class
got ration and other
things but the lower
middle class had a big
damage. There were
no jobs, unemploy-
ment increased,” he
said. He suggested that
policy should be made
while considering
such a class.
Rajan also suggested
that a conducive envi-
ronment and factors are
needed for small and
medium scale indus-
tries to grow bigger.
On investment in the
stock market by people
less informed, Rajan
said that consumer pro-
tection should be there
so that they can know
their rights.
Gandhi said that
when there is hatred
everywhere in the
world, India can show
the path. “This is our
culture, history and
strength,” he said.

It is clear from the
statement of KC Venu-

is adopting the policy of
“wait and watch” on the
statements of the three

Ajay Maken’s letter is
also said to be one of
the reasons behind the
delay in the decision,
although it is a differ-
ent matter that the
Sachin Pilot camp had
pressed for action
against the three lead-

had said in their reply
that parallel meeting
were not held and min-

,
animal print is always
fashionable. Addition-

But how about a galaxy
print with a cosmic mo-
tif to raise your pattern
game?
Galaxy is an expres-
sion of digital innova-
tion that includes deep
blue and electric pinks
and is closer to violet
but often less saturated
than purple. It was in-
spired by the holo-
graphic effects of light.
The 2018 Color of the
Year represents knowl-
edge and exploration,
independence and self-
respect, creativity and
complexity, mystery
and magic. The colour
violet, which is related
to monarchy and stands
for strength, nobility,
luxury, and ambition,
blends the qualities of
blue’s stability with
red’s energy
. It conveys
luxury and elegance
and has historically
been associated with in-
trospection, spirituali-
ty and mindfulness
techniques.
Galaxy fashion has
already become a trend-
setter in today’s fashion
world. It is perfect for a
person who is into stars
and the universe.
The galaxy print
hasn’t lately taken over
your Instagram feed be-
cause it’s off the beaten
path. So it’s a welcome
change of pace to see a
poster of a dreamy con-
stellation made up of
stars and planets.
In reality, the galaxy
print has only started to
show up on the catwalk.
The runway during the
Fall 2017 Milan Fashion
Week had a galactic mo-
tif. The Ashish Spring/
Summer 2018 Ready-to-

had a cosmic motif. Ad-
ditionally, the Galaxy
theme is heavily empha-
sised in these pieces
from the Zuhair Murad

RESEARCH (BASIC
SECONDARY RESEARCH
ONLINE):
Go online and search for
your interview subject (in-
terviewee). Find out as
much information as you
can about the subject. If
the subject has his/her
own website, research that
thoroughly and gather as
much Factual Information
as possible. In addition to
the factual information
from the subject’s own
website and social media
handles, also search gener-
ally about him/her on
google. Try and read arti-
cles about/by the subject.
Create a mental picture of
your subject – education,
work life, personal life,
professional highs and
lows, experiences and jot
down points in a diary
.
OCCASION (WHAT/
WHERE/WHEN):
Be extremely mindful of
what the event/occasion
for the Interview is. Is it for
a function at college with a
live audience? Is a for a
Publication/Newspaper?
Who is the Target audience
of the interview? Is it peo-
ple from a specific/certain
section of society? All this
information will give you
clues on how to construct
the questions in order for
the interview to be most
Relevant and Interesting/
Engaging to the intended
audience. For instance, if
you are interviewing the
subject for a college news-
letter, then your questions
should seek to have inspi-
rational answers, and
delve into the subject’s
own educational journey,
and work-life journey so as
to provide a path and point
of context for the majority
of the readers who will be
Students. On the other
hand, if the interview is
for a Conference or Profes-
sional Forum, then your
Questions should be more
Business Oriented, focus-
ing more on the Profes-
sional life of the Subject. If
the interview is for a more
light-hearted social-media
platform, your questions
can/should include some
humour and less serious
topics too!
PRE-PLAN BUT
STAY FLEXIBLE:
It is a good idea to develop
and pre-write a question-
naire. This questionnaire
might have around 10 to 12
questions. However, once
the interview starts, and
you begin asking your pre-
written questions, you
must remain flexible.
Sometimes, your subject
will be difficult, not very
open, will answer in yes/
no, and will not elaborate
– then, you will have to
have enough presence of
mind to ask him/her the
same question in different
words (rather than moving
on to your next question),
without irritating the sub-
ject. In another situation,
maybe the subject gives
you an answer that might
take the interview in a
completely different direc-
tion. You must have the
presence of mind to not
stick to your questionnaire
too strictly
, and notice and
takeadvantageof theinter-
esting direction your sub-
ject is wanting to take the
interview. For example,
you ask your subject, What
was your school
life like? And your next
question was to tell us one
bad incident from your
school life. And the subject
answers,myschoollifewas
happy and uneventful, but
when I got my first job, I
almost did not get selected
for the interview! (forget
your follow-up school-relat-
ed question and have the
presence of mind to probe
the job interview further).
ETIQUETTE:
This stays the same if you
are the interviewer or the
interviewee. You must be
gracious, thankful, com-
plementary
, and polite. Say
things like, Thank you for
Taking the Time and talk-
ing to me/us. Likewise, say
thank you for having me (if
you are the subject). Al-
ways express your grati-
tude at the beginning of
the interview as well as at
the end, and off the record,
ask how the interview was.
EQUALITY:
Having just talked about
etiquette, being polite in
no way means that one
comes across as subservi-
ent, in-awe-of, or ‘less than
the interviewee. No matter
who the interviewee is,
how accomplished, re-
spected, senior, or some-
one who enjoys celebrity
status; be on equal
terms and footing with
the person, or else it will
show. And if it shows, the
interview will be both un-
professional and likely to
be editorially compro-
mised.
With the aforemen-
tioned tips and tricks, you
can be sure to combine
knowledge and skill in a
manner that makes you a
very gifted and natural in-
terviewer. Go ahead, try it!

SPIRITUAL SPEAK Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it. —Bible IN-DEPTH WILL FORMER RBI GUV GO BEYOND YATRA AND TAKE POLITICAL PLUNGE ormer Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan joining Rahul Gan- dhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra, however briefly, in Ra- jasthan has brought his political leanings in the open. The former Governor has always been criti- cal of the BJP government’s eco- nomic policies but earlier his views were taken to be that of an academician and economist. Now onwards his opinions will be looked at as biased political views. The BJP attacked Rajan with the retort that he wants “to be another Manmohan Singh” who, incidentally , is still regard- ed as a highly rated economist. Amit Malviya, BJP’s IT Cell chief,saidthatRajan’s“commen- tary on the Indian economy…is coloured and opportunistic”. The criticism will not dilute the significance of the event as Rajan is an eminent economist and will bolster the appeal of Ra- hul Gandhi’s march. The ques- tion that many would seek an answer to is whether Rajan, who has been a strong critic of de- monetisation, will join the Con- gress or support it from outside. TOP TWEETS F hina’s provoca- tive action along the Line of Actual Control in Ta- wang has raised temperatures between the two countries. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) at- tempting to occupy vantage positions in the Yangtse area of Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh were effectively pushed back by the Indian soldiers after a skirmish in which a few soldiers suffered injuries but that won’t deter the Chinese from attempting another transgression either in Ladakh or in Tawang. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s statement in Parliament that the “Indian Army bravely prevented the PLA from transgressing into our territory and compelled them to return to their posts” did not satisfy Oppn which insisted on a discussion on repeated Chinese aggression. The govt did not accede to the demand leading to a walkout by the Opposition. The de- mand was also made after a more violent clash in Galwan Valley in 2020 in which many soldiers were killed. The disengagement hap- pened after several rounds of talks between the army com- manders of both sides but Chinese build-up in Ladakh remains a worrying factor. Even in Yangtse area there is nothing new about Chinese transgression. In 2021 Chi- nese launched an aggression with sizable number of troops which too was repulsed. The status quo along LAC is not a very comforting idea because of China’s attempts to open new flashpoints along LAC whether in the east or in Ladakh. It is this unpredict- ability of PLA that has made Oppn seek clarification from the govt on the actual situa- tion along the border which the Chinese say is stable. DANGEROUS MOVE ALONG THE LAC Rajnath’s statement in Parl that “Indian Army bravely prevented the PLA from transgressing into our territory, compelled them to return to their posts” did not satisfy Oppn which insisted on a discussion on repeated Chinese aggression C he 2022 FIFA World Cup has certainly attracted plenty of negative press, with scandal frombiddingprocessthrough to the tournament itself. Yet out of this negativity, one positive storyline has arisen. With victories over two re- cent European champions – Spain and Portugal – Moroc- co have become the first Afri- can nation to reach the last four of the World Cup. MAPPING A PATH TO THE FINAL Could the location of the tour- nament itself partially ex- plaintheMoroccans’surprise progress?WhenanAsianside – South Korea in 2002 - simi- larly broke the duopoly of Europe and the Americas, it was on home soil. An African squad would have made it to the semifi- nals 12 years ago in the first World Cup to be hosted on that continent, if not for one of the most infamously un- sporting acts in the game’s history, at the hands (literal- ly) of Uruguay’s Luis Suarez. Now the World Cup is played in the Arab world for the first time and, perhaps not coincidentally , we are see- ing a nation from the region reach unprecedented heights. GEOGRAPHY COULD MATTER MORE THAN WE THINK In 21 previous tournaments, only three teams have lifted the trophy without being ei- ther hosts or a prior cham- pion. One of those – West Germany in 1954 – did so in a neighbouring country. Be- fore 2010, no European na- tion had won the tournament outside Europe and only one non-European nation had won on the continent. This trend is also seen in continental competitions. The European Champion- ships’ two biggest shocks were Denmark’s 1992 success after initially failing to qual- ify, and the 2004 champion- ship of rank outsiders Greece. The Danes’ victory came in another Scandina- vian nation, and the Greek success was in another Medi- terranean country . Of course, none of this is directly causal. The Moroc- cans have certainly not reached this lofty stage be- cause the tournament is in a fellow Arab country. As a low-scoring, complex team game, football is one of the hardest sports to predict and every little advantage, even as small as being in a compa- rable climate, could tip the balance of a game one way or another. PARALLELS WITH OTHER NATIONS When looking at historical data, the clearest predictor of whichsidesmaybeprimed to perform better than ever before is their latitude rela- tive to the tournament host. For example, Paraguay’s best run was in South Africa in 2010, at similar latitude, rath- er than in geographically closer South American na- tions further south. Of the 39 nations to reach the tournament at least six times, 23 of those have never bettered their performance at the tournament closest to their home latitude. Almost three-quarters of sides’ best tournaments involved travel less than 10 degrees either north or south. THE “WORLD” GAME? Even with its huge global ap- peal, football has been his- torically slanted towards Eu- rope and the Americas, which may have stifled pro- gress of the game in other regions. Despite its numerous on- going flaws, the administra- tion has come a long way since the absurd situation in 1958 when the one place des- ignated for a team from the Asian and African regions was taken by Wales. Morocco’s fairytale run should certainly be seen as a huge positive for the game in North Africa, in particular. There do remain numerous “blind spots” in where tour- naments have been held. Rio de Janeiro, where the 1950 and 2010 finals were held, lies within one degree of the Tropic of Capricorn. Amazingly, if you travel north from there, you will only find one World Cup final venue (Mexico City) south of Doha. A SPORTING CHANCE Criticisms of the process and politics underlying the 2022 World Cup cannot be over- looked, but the decision to broaden the geographic foot- print of host nations can at least be seen as a positive step towards a more reason- able distribution of sporting advantage. SOURCE: THE CONVERSATION T MISHA KETCHELL The writer is Editor, The Conversation Australia No on-field results will (nor should) lessen the valid criticisms surrounding this tournament, but it would be a shame for the historic achievement for African football to be overlooked. We can’t definitively know how much of a role geographic proximity played in the Moroccan story, but the case for breaking European and American hegemony over the game is surely established beyond doubt 2022 FIFA WC HAS CERTAINLY ATTRACTED PLENTY OF NEGATIVE PRESS, WITH SCANDAL FROM BIDDING PROCESS THROUGH TO THE TOURNAMENT ITSELF. Congress is worried about Amethi and Rae Bareli Shamsher Singh New Delhi: The two traditional Lok Sabha seats of Gandhis - Am- ethi and Rae Bareli - are a majro cause of worry for the grandold party and the party’s first family - Gandhi family. These seats have been held by the family for decades but in the last election BJP’s Smriti Irani defeated Rahul Gandhi in Amethi seat. Rahul’s team had an idea of this in advance, so he contested from the Wayanad seat in Kerala, from where he is now an MP. Therefore, now the big question is whether Rahul Gandhi will con- test from Amethi this time or not? If he fights, will he fight from only one seat or will we fight from both Amethi and Wayanad seats? Keep in mind that no member of the Nehru- Gandhi family has lost two consecutive elec- tions. Indira Gandhi was also defeated from Rae Bareli, then won from Chikmagalur in the by- election and did not lose again after that. Sonia Gandhi has not lost any election. Rahul has also beencontestingelections since 2004 and lost from Amethi for the first time in2019.Sothefamilycan- not take the risk that he contests rom Amethi again and loses. The cur- rent situation in Uttar Pradesh is not very good for the Congress. The BJPisridingonthewave of HindutvaandtheCon- gress and the first family have also left both the re- gions. On the other hand BJP and Smriti Irani are active in both the areas. As far as Rae Bareli is concerned, it is almost certain that Sonia Gan- dhi will not contest the elections this time. Her health is also not good andafterleavingthepost of Congress President, sheisalmostinastateof retirement. Even if she hastobecomeanMP ,she will go to Rajya Sabha like Sharad Pawar. That is why it is believed that this time Priyanka Gan- dhi Vadra can contest from Sonia’s seat. Con- gress is still confident about that seat but the partyisnottooconfident about Amethi. It is certain that BJP will try to make a big fight on both these seats. Evenif PriyankaandRa- hul contest poll or only Priyanka contests, the party will try to corner her and some renowned andaggressivecandidate willbefieldedsothatPri- yanka can be surround- ed in her own area. Rai, the regional head of the party in UP, also said that it is his appeal to the people of Amethi to send Rahul Gandhi to Delhi by electing him as an MP again with a huge margin. “The Gandhi-Nehru family has old relations with Amethi...no one can weaken it. Rahul Gandhi will contest from Amethi in 2024,” Rai told reporters here. There has been no word from the party so far on the former Congress president fighting the next parliamentary elections again from Amethi. Ra- hul Gandhi, who had won the Amethi parliamentary seat for three times in a row, was defeated by BJP leader and Union minister Smriti Irani in 2019 elections. SUKHU’S ELEVATION A SIGN OF CHANGING TIMES IN CONGRESS? Mahesh Sharma Shimla: Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu becoming the Chief Minister in Himachal Pradesh is a big deal for the Con- gress in many respects. He is the first such lead- er who was made the state president by Rahul Gandhi and has now be- come the Chief Minis- ter. Keep in mind that when the Congress par- ty was in power at the center, Rahul Gandhi promoted many leaders. He made many young leaders ministers in the center. But barring a few exceptions, all the youths were sons of one or the other prominent leader. Many of them conducted major fraud with Rahul and Con- gress. Rahul also made many young leaders as state presidents, but many of them also cheated. However, no member of his youth team had yet become the chief minister. Sukhuisthefirstlead- er who was made the President of Himachal Pradesh by Rahul Gan- dhi despite opposition from the old leaders of the party and now he has become the Chief Minister. Rahul had giv- en Sukhu a go-ahead de- spite opposition from the then Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh. Was made the president in 2013. Also worth noting is the fact that Sukhu does not come from a po- litical family . He is the son of a simple bus driv- er. Barring two or three exceptions, Rahul has always promoted and been cheated by mem- bers of big political fam- ilies. So, now there is a new beginning. Instead of people coming from well-known political dy- nasties and rich fami- lies, peoplefromhumble background have start- ed going to higher posi- tions in Congress and this can be a good sign for Congress. It was in- spired by the holo- graphic effects of light. The 2018 Color of the Year represents knowl- edge and exploration, independence and self- respect, creativity and complexity, mystery and magic. The colour violet, which is related to monarchy and stands for strength, nobility, luxury, and ambition, blends the qualities of blue’s stability with red’s energy . It conveys luxury and elegance and has historically been associated with in- trospection, spirituali- ty and mindfulness techniques. Galaxy fashion has already become a trend- setter in today’s fashion world. It is perfect for a person who is into stars and the universe. The galaxy print hasn’t lately taken over your Instagram feed be- cause it’s off the beaten path. So it’s a welcome change of pace to see a poster of a dreamy con- stellation made up of stars and planets. In reality, the galaxy print has only started to show up on the catwalk. It is a hugely advantageous asset to students, profession- als and almost any- one. That one may not aspire to be a journal- ist or reporter, talk show host or present- er, has nothing to do with developing this ability. A great inter- viewer will always make for a sound con- versationalist, im- prove his/her confi- dence levels and al- ways come across as a convincing communi- cator. So what are these elements or pre- requisites to becom- ing an astute Inter- viewer? Read on. KARTIK BAJORIA cityfirst@firstindia.co.in T RESEARCH (BASIC SECONDARY RESEARCH ONLINE): Go online and search for your interview subject (in- terviewee). Find out as much information as you can about the subject. If the subject has his/her own website, research that thoroughly and gather as much Factual Information as possible. In addition to the factual information from the subject’s own website and social media handles, also search gener- ally about him/her on google. Try and read arti- cles about/by the subject. Create a mental picture of your subject – education, work life, personal life, professional highs and lows, experiences and jot down points in a diary . OCCASION (WHAT/ WHERE/WHEN): Be extremely mindful of what the event/occasion for the Interview is. Is it for a function at college with a live audience? Is a for a Publication/Newspaper? Who is the Target audience of the interview? Is it peo- ple from a specific/certain section of society? All this information will give you clues on how to construct the questions in order for the interview to be most Relevant and Interesting/ Engaging to the intended audience. For instance, if you are interviewing the subject for a college news- letter, then your questions should seek to have inspi- rational answers, and delve into the subject’s own educational journey, and work-life journey so as to provide a path and point of context for the majority of the readers who will be Students. On the other hand, if the interview is for a Conference or Profes- sional Forum, then your Questions should be more Business Oriented, focus- ing more on the Profes- sional life of the Subject. If the interview is for a more light-hearted social-media platform, your questions can/should include some humour and less serious topics too! PRE-PLAN BUT STAY FLEXIBLE: It is a good idea to develop and pre-write a question- naire. This questionnaire might have around 10 to 12 questions. However, once the interview starts, and you begin asking your pre- written questions, you must remain flexible. Sometimes, your subject will be difficult, not very open, will answer in yes/ no, and will not elaborate – then, you will have to have enough presence of mind to ask him/her the same question in different words (rather than moving on to your next question), without irritating the sub- ject. In another situation, maybe the subject gives you an answer that might take the interview in a completely different direc- tion. You must have the presence of mind to not stick to your questionnaire too strictly , and notice and takeadvantageof theinter- esting direction your sub- ject is wanting to take the interview. For example, you ask your subject, What was your school life like? And your next question was to tell us one bad incident from your school life. And the subject answers, myschoollifewas happy and uneventful, but when I got my first job, I almost did not get selected for the interview! (forget your follow-up school-relat- ed question and have the presence of mind to probe the job interview further). ETIQUETTE: This stays the same if you are the interviewer or the interviewee. You must be gracious, thankful, com- plementary , and polite. Say things like, Thank you for Taking the Time and talk- ing to me/us. Likewise, say thank you for having me (if you are the subject). Al- ways express your grati- tude at the beginning of the interview as well as at the end, and off the record, ask how the interview was. EQUALITY: Having just talked about etiquette, being polite in no way means that one comes across as subservi- ent, in-awe-of, or ‘less than the interviewee. No matter who the interviewee is, how accomplished, re- spected, senior, or some- one who enjoys celebrity status; be on equal terms and footing with the person, or else it will show. And if it shows, the interview will be both un- professional and likely to be editorially compro- mised. With the aforemen- tioned tips and tricks, you can be sure to combine knowledge and skill in a manner that makes you a very gifted and natural in- terviewer. Go ahead, try it! hand, if the interview is for a Conference or Profes- ject. In another situation, take the interview in a tion. You must have the presence of mind to not too strictly , and notice and takeadvantageof theinter- ject is wanting to take the Sometimes, your subject life like? And your next question was to tell us one the interview as well as at the end, and off the record, ask how the interview was.
