3. Luxembourg Policymakers Consider Revolutionary
Renewable Energy Plan
Luxembourg policymakers are considering a plan to turn the country into a 100 percent renewable
energy consumer by 2050. In November 2016, the country’s Ministry of the Economy and
Chamber of Commerce endorsed a strategic plan titled The Third Industrial Revolution Strategy
Study for the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, which outlines four proposals: increasing building
efficiency, replacing oil with cleaner alternatives, increasing coverage of renewable energy to 70
percent, and reducing reliance on energy imports. The plan also features ambitious goals such as
the creation of an energy Internet promoting renewable self-consumption.
4. Luxembourg Policymakers Consider Revolutionary
Renewable Energy Plan
Currently, Luxembourg faces a number of challenges in the energy sector. The country is a net
importer of energy and thus relies heavily on neighboring countries to meet its energy needs. In
addition, oil consumption is going up as a result of road fuel sales. This increases carbon
emissions.
5. Luxembourg Policymakers Consider Revolutionary
Renewable Energy Plan
The country’s government has focused on mitigating carbon emissions by scaling back
consumption by energy-intensive industries, promoting energy-efficient buildings, and significantly
increasing funding for energy-focused research and development.
