3. MAGNITUDE OF THE PROBLEM
BLINDNESS IN INDIA-15 MILLION +
THERE ARE 2 MILLION BLIND CHILDREN IN
INDIA.ONLY 5 % OF THEM RECEIVE ANY
EDUCATION.
CORNEAL BLINDNESS-4.6 MILLION
(90% BELOW AGE 45 YRS.
INCLUDING 60% CHILDREN
BELOW 12 YRS.)
4. FACTS ABOUT EYE DONATION
EYES CAN BE DONATED ONLY AFTER DEATH.
EYES MUST BE REMOVED WITHIN 4-6 HOURS
AFTER DEATH.
EYE REMOVAL DOES NOT DELAY THE FUNERAL
AS THE ENTIRE PROCEDURE TAKES ONLY 15-20
MINUTES.
THE IDENTITIES OF BOTH DONOR AND
RECEPIENT ARE KEPT CONFIDENTIAL.
5. CORNEAL TRANSPLANTATION
This is a procedure in which
the cornea of donor eye is
grafted to replace the
diseased cornea of the
patient.
A significant proportion of
blind patients can have their
sight restored through
corneal transplantation.
7. Who can donate?
Spectacle wearers, diabetics, hypertensive and people
suffering from systemic disorders like Asthma, Tuberculosis
... can also donate eyes
9. Who cannot donate?
Cornea can not be used for Transplantation if the patients
are identified with AIDS, Hepatitis B, C, Rabies,
Septicemia, active Leukaemia and any other infectious
disease.
