Market
Opportunities and challenges of vegetable crops seed system
Challenges
 Low supply of quality seed
 Producers less awareness to use
improved technologies (use of
un known origin)
 Infestation of disease and pests
 Weak linkage among research-
extension and other stallholders
( universities, cooperatives and
others)
 Infrastructure
Opportunities
 Improved varieties and
practices generation through
research
 Involvement of development
organizations to scale up and
transfer promising
technologies ( universities,
IFAD, ISSD and other
projects)
 suitable environment to
produce quality seed by
Investors and farmers

Enhancing the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in Tigray through
Establishment of Improved and Sustainable Vegetable Seed The case
of Tomato, Pepper, Garlic and Lettuce.
Objective
 To strengthen farmer based vegetable seed production as a means of
ensuring better market opportunity to seed producers and create dependable
quality source of planting materials to growers
