Social media in Afghanistan
 Afghanistan is one of the least
developed countries, mainly
due to the decades of war and
lack of foreign investment.
Internet users Surface
Due to low literacy rate and high internet
fees, about 10% of the 33 million populations
have internet access.
Internet users 2002-2013
FURTHER USERS
Services such as
 YouTube
 Facebook
 Twitter
ND others are limited to the upper-
middle-class youth in the major urban
areas.
Facebook Users
 Facebook currently has around 2.5 million users in
Afghanistan in many other places; new media is growing in
Afghanistan.
Online Users
 About 4 million online users were reported in 2017. Internet access is
growing through 4G, 3G and ADSL, internet cafes. There are many
online media in Afghanistan.
New media impact
New media, especially social media has been spreading rapidly every
day. New media had a positive impact and changed in different
industries. From media to
 business
 education
 Government
 banking services
 Health services
 and society.
infrastructure
 New media are playing important roles in all
aspects of our lives in Afghanistan.
 Alongside the public sector, entities that
provide services in critical infrastructure sectors
like energy, health, aviation, communication
and financial services have.
Urban life
 Social media is becoming an intrinsic part of urban life in
Afghanistan and afghan youth are increasingly using social
websites and weblogs on the internet for wider communications
and debates on all kinds of social and political issues.
Afghans population internet uses
According to the ministry of
communications and technology, 10
percent of the Afghans population
uses internet.
Facebook, Twitter, YouTube users
 Over 260, 0000 Afghans are
regular users of social media sites
including Facebook twitter,
YouTube, and weblogs. Access to
internet in Afghanistan become
common in 2002.
CONTINUANCE
 Though internets sue remains low, there has been a
significant advancement in access since 2002, when most
Afghans had to travel to neighboring countries just to make
a phone call.
Invested ICT sector
2.5 Billion US Dollars were invested in the ICT
sector for in Afghanistan during the past 15
years.
Afghanistan and Chinese 4G contract
 In November 2006, the Ministry of Communications
contracted Chinese firm (ZTE) for the establishment of a
countrywide fiber optical cable network.
 4G and 4G services began in the country in 2012 and are
provided by all major telecommunication companies.

High cost of internet access
 Internet access is also expensive in Afghanistan, although
prices have recently decreased.
 In 2002, 1 MB internet price per month was 5000$ but
currently 1 MB internet is 150 Dollar per month.

information technology.
