  2. 2. Indian Internet Population Out of the 25% of Indian population which stays in cities, 32% are PC literate. Out of those who are PC literate, 53% are actively using the internet (have used internet in past 1 month). 16% of 266 Mn urban population ie 43 Mn are actively using the Internet. Internet usage among urban individuals is low at 24%.
  3. 3. In million 21% increase in PC literacy from 2008 to 2009. 26% increase in active internet user base from 2008 to 2009. In million An individual who knows how to use a PC has been classified as PC literate. An individual who has used the internet at least once in the last month Growing Urban Internet Population
  4. 4. <ul><li>Increasing number of cyber cafés & government </li></ul><ul><li>initiatives of e-kiosks has led to the smaller towns </li></ul><ul><li>overtaking the top 8 metros in Internet Usage in 2009. </li></ul><ul><li>Internet usage in small towns with population less than </li></ul><ul><li>5 lakhs, has seen maximum growth from </li></ul><ul><li>5% composition share to 36%. </li></ul>Internet User Composition

Internet Usage <ul><li>School and College students contribute </li></ul><ul><li>44% of the internet usage – </li></ul><ul><li>though mostly for educational </li></ul><ul><li>information search & entertainment. </li></ul><ul><li>Along with young men, they account </li></ul><ul><li>for 72% of internet usage. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Internet Usage <ul><li>The most popular point of connection to the internet is from cyber cafes. </li></ul><ul><li>As more businesses adopt the internet as their key infrastructure, accessing internet through offices continue to rise. </li></ul>

Various Purposes of Accessing Internet <ul><li>There has been an absolute increase in the use of internet as a medium for </li></ul><ul><li>socializing and leisure activities like downloading music and videos. </li></ul><ul><li>On account of availability of academic material online like CBSE ebooks & </li></ul><ul><li>online examinations for centralized tests such as CAT, searching education </li></ul><ul><li>related information has increased substantially compared to 2009 </li></ul>

Preference of Online Services <ul><li>Overall people still largely use </li></ul><ul><li>the internet for email and </li></ul><ul><li>Information. </li></ul><ul><li>School & College student use </li></ul><ul><li>internet primarily for </li></ul><ul><li>Information & entertainment </li></ul><ul><li>related services. </li></ul><ul><li>Working professionals tend to </li></ul><ul><li>utilize the internet for </li></ul><ul><li>communication & information </li></ul><ul><li>Search. This group is also </li></ul><ul><li>receptive to ecommerce. </li></ul>

Frequency of Internet Usage <ul><li>Almost 50% of the internet users </li></ul><ul><li>are online at least 4-6 times a </li></ul><ul><li>week. </li></ul><ul><li>With more businesses adopting the </li></ul><ul><li>internet, the working </li></ul><ul><li>professionals access the internet </li></ul><ul><li>at least 4-6 times a week. </li></ul>

Avg Time spent on Internet <ul><li>Internet usage has gone up from </li></ul><ul><li>9.3 hrs/week to 15.7 hrs/week </li></ul><ul><li>ie a steep 70% rise. </li></ul><ul><li>The internet’s current status of </li></ul><ul><li>offering ease of communication </li></ul><ul><li>and networking with the plethora </li></ul><ul><li>of social networks & applications </li></ul><ul><li>that encourage stickiness, has </li></ul><ul><li>made it increasingly compelling. </li></ul>
