For many adults, behavioral health problems can be
as serious and as challenging to their physical health.
Accurate diagnosis and treatment of mental health
conditions can greatly enhance the quality of life.
We have established a specialized unit within our
hospitals to focus on geropsychiatry, an area of
medicine that addresses the unique physical and
emotional needs of older adults.
• 16-bed unit at Encino Hospital Medical Center
• 19-bed unit at Sherman Oaks Hospital
Our experienced, compassionate team of healthcare
professionals provide the tender care and emotional
support these patients and their families need. We
support and encourage family members to participate
in their loved one’s treatment process.
As a hospital-based program, we can accept patients
who have a psychiatric diagnosis along with chronic
medical conditions.
Services Include
Our team offers a wide range of medical and
behavioral health services, including:
• Psychiatric assessment and treatment
• Management of medical conditions
• Medication management
• Dietary and nutrition consultation
• Recreational therapy assessment and treatment
• Specialized individual, family, and group therapy
• Education for patients and families on diagnosis,
treatment options, and medications
• Case management with discharge planning and
financial counseling
• 24-hour clinical nursing team
• Crisis stabilization 24 hours / 7 days a week
Signs of a Crisis
Our goal is to help patients attain an optimum level
of functioning. We can help seniors who are showing
the following signs:
• Mood swings, depression
• Isolative or withdrawn behavior
• Prolonged grief or sadness
• Harmful behaviors to self or others
• Recurrent thoughts of suicide or death
• Suicide attempts
• Hallucinations or delusions
• Severe behavioral problems
• Feelings of hopelessness and helplessness
• Panic or anxiety attacks
• Confusion, disorientation, memory changes
• Inability to care for self or home
Admission Process
Admissions for patients 50 years and older are accepted
24 hours a day, every day. Anyone can refer a patient
to our Senior Behavioral Health Unit, including friends
and family members, primary care physicians, social
service agencies, clergy, and long-term care facilities.
Before admission, we perform a free, confidential
screening to ensure that the patient is medically stable
and meets our unit’s criteria for admission.
