Why do we need punctuation
 Punctuation allows the authors writing to be easy to
read and understandable for the reader.
 A punctuation is used to create, sense , clearity and
stress in sentence.
 Set of specific symbols OR marks that are used in
the sentence and phrases make the meaning clear.

Rule: Use at the end of complete sentence
Example: I went to the store of groceries.
Rule: Use at the end of an indirect question.
Example: He asked where the milk was.
COMMA
 Rule: Use a comma to separate words or items in list.
 Example: She has two dogs, three goats ,one bird ,five
parrots and five fish in her house.
 Rule: Use a comma to separate a city from its state.
 Example: I am from East California, America
 Rule: Use a comma to separate the day of the month from
the year.
 Example: He was born on July 4 , 1999
 Rule: Use a comma to separate two adjectives [describing
words] when the word can be inserted between them.
 Example: She was a young, beautiful dog.
Question Mark
 Rule: Use a question mark only after a direct question.
 Example: Will you come over after school?

Exclamation Point
 Rule: Use the Exclamation point to show emphasis or
excitement.
 Example: Summer is in three months!
Quotation Marks
 Rule : Use Quotation Marks to set off a direct
quotation.
 Example: “What is your favorite color ?”She asked.
 Rule : Periods and commas always go inside quotation
marks.
 Example:“I don’t want to go to school‚” Ali said.
COLON
 Rule: Use the colon after a complete sentence to
introduce a list of items.
 Example: On my trip I will bring: clothes, a pillow, a
sleeping bag, a toothbrush, and my teddy bear.
 Rule: Use the colon after the greeting of the person’s
name in a business letter.
 Example: Dear Mr. Smith:
PARENTHESIS
 Parenthesis
 Rule: Use parenthesis to enclose words or figures that
clarify or are used as an aside.
 Example: He received one hundred and fifty points
(150) in his math project.
APOSTROPHE
Rule: Use the apostrophe when combining two words.
 It is always placed in the spot where the letter(s) have been
removed.
 Example : She’s (she is) only allowed candy on Friday.
 Rule: Use the apostrophe to show possession. Place the
apostrophe before the s.
 Example: They found Ms. Connor’s gloves.’
THE DASH
 Rule: We Use the dash before a break in a sentence.
 Example: I wish I could come earlier-but who could
for eat all fate.
 Rule : we used a dash before or after a list.
 Example: Rich and poor , high and low, old and young-
all fought for freedom.
THE HYPHEN
 Rule: We Use hyphen in the formation of compound
words.
 Example : father- in-law. Passer -by.
 Rule : Use the hyphen between two numbers
indicating the inclusion of content.
 Example: Beauti–ful. Write-pen.
 Rule : Use the hyphen between a cardinal number and
an ordinal number.
 Example : In the morning I saw a beauti-ful garden.
THE SEMI COLON
 Definition :
 Use the semi colon when the greater pass is
required then it is indicated by comma.
 Rule : use to separate the clauses of compound
sentences when they contain a comma.
 Example : he was a brave , large - hearted man and we
all honoured him.
 Rule : use to separate a series of loosely-clauses.
 Example : Her heart was pure: her life screen.
CAPITAL LETTERS
 Rule : Capital letters are used to begin the first word of
sentence.
 Rule : Use to begin the first word for every line of
verse.
 Rule : Use to begin the first word of direct speech.
 Rule : Use to begin the names of months and days.
 Rule : Use for proper noun and proper adjectives.
 Rule : Use for the name of instructions.
 Rule : Use for the name of festivals.
 Rule : Use for the pronoun “ T’’
