Connectivity in North East is a major issue of concern due to its
difficult terrain and inclement weather conditions.
Despite all the constraints, upgradation of branches to 2 MBPS
Primary Connectivity has been done in 472 Branches/ Offices so far
with the help of service providers, viz. BSNL, Airtel, Vodafone and Tat
Caommunications Ltd.
We have also upgraded 71 VSAT Branches so far to 2 MBPS Leased

to provide 2 MBPS conncetivity to some areas, particularly in Arunachal
Pradesh, Tura in Meghalaya, Mokokchung in Nagaland & Aizawl in
Mizoram. We have taken up with Airtel for upgradation of these 231
branches to 2 MBPS primary connectivity.
10. DIGITAL BANKING
Due to its difficult terrain and inclement weather conditions,
connectivity is a major drawback in this part of the country.
Nevertheless, State Bank has handled it quite efficiently and has
implemented all its digital initiatives in the region along with all other
major cities of the country. These initiative are aimed at taking the
customer service to a new height.
InTouch Branches are the most recent hi-tech addition to the array
of our Bank Branches wherein the customers can do all their
transactions in a self service mode without any manual intervention.
In the North East, we have so far opened 4 such Branches in
Guwahati(2), Shillong and Dibrugarh and we are going to open another
4 in Aizawl, Imphal, Agartala and Jorhat within September 2016.

the Region where the availability has almost touched 90% in
August 2016. We are targeting to soon take it beyond 95%. It is
very heartening to note that the ATM share of the Bank in the

installed solar UPS in 13 ATMs in 13 regions on pilot basis to
overcome the power supply issues and soon going to roll out to
other ATMs.
To enhance the customer delight by efficient crowd management
and reduced waiting time in the branches, the Bank has
undertaken Customer Experience Excellence Project ( CEEP) in the

12. DIGITAL BANKING
Under CEEP, the Bank in the NER has secured the No. 1 position in
the country in migration to Swayam, the bar coded passbook printing
system. I am very glad to announce that this Circle is the first one in
the country to introduce Swayam at CSP. The Bank has installed
Swayam at its Rampur CSP on a pilot basis and soon it is going to be
replicated in other CSPs in the entire region which will prove to be a
major game changer.
The Bank in the NER stands 2nd in the country in terms of the
transactions done through card-based Green Channel Counters with
47 % transactions taking place through this channel.

16. BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES
North Eastern Region is blessed with rich natural
resources. The climatic conditions of the region is
best suited for agri and horticulture crops.
Huge potential for the banks to encourage small
tea growers, young entrepreneurs engaged in cane
and bamboo products, handicrafts, handlooms,
food processing industries.
17. The region is fast becoming a hot tourist destination
offering ample opportunities in tea tourism, cultural
tourism, adventure sports, wild life tourism and
other hospitality management activities.
Act East Policy has envisaged improvement in
connectivity in the region. Many new highway and
railroad projects are coming up. This opens up the
opportunities towards infrastructure projects
besides opportunities for financing retail and fleet
operators to boost up transport activities.
18. Going by the opportunities available, the region needs to be
developed as an export hub that can link up with India’s
neighbourhood in South and South East Asia. For this,
several SEZs across the NER is required to be developed.
19. CROSS BORDER ACTIVITIES
The North Eastern states maintain trade and commercial ties
mainly with the neighbouring countries like Nepal,
Bangladesh, Bhutan and Myanmar.
Currently cross border trading with Myanmar is taking place
through the designated custom ports at Moreh in Manipur
and Zokhawtar in Mizoram. However, the trading activities
are taking place primarily through informal channel. The two
nations have enough potential for trade and commerce in the
areas of cane, bamboo and wood products, pharmaceuticals,
rubber products, refined petroleum products, cement and
textile items.
20. The proposed railway linkage between Agartala and Akhaura in
Bangladesh would facilitate easier connectivity between West
Bengal and North Eastern States through Bangladesh. India and
Bangladesh have already agreed to allow cargo movement
through Chittagong international sea port.
To facilitate border trade, State Bank is well placed with 52
branches in the region dealing with foreign exchange business.
The Bank has branches in Bangladesh and Myanmar, an
associate in Bhutan and a subsidiary in Nepal. The Bank is ready
to open many more branches in these neighbouring countries
wherever considered necessary in future.
