Nutrition & Resilience: strengthening family farmers
In recent years, natural and man-made shocks and crises have increased
Crises disrupt livelihoods of farming families’ and trigger malnutrition
Nutrition gives families better chances to successfully withstand crises
FAO works with farming families to strengthen their nutrition and resilience to shocks, through capacity building, input distributions and social protection
Understanding the causesof malnutrition helps finding solutions in times of crises
FAO supports the production of local foods with high nutritional values to support family farmers’ nutrition
FAO helps farming families diversify their sources of food & income to improve resilience and nutrition
Nutrition and Resilience: strengthening family farmers

Nutrition and Resilience: strengthening family farmers

  1. In recent years, natural and man-made shocks and crises have increased.
  2. Crisis-prone countries often have the highest prevalence of under-nutrition in young children.
  3. Well-nourished families are better able to withstand and recover from shocks.
  4. FAO works with farming families to strengthen their nutrition and their resilience to shocks.
  5. Emergency and development actors from different sectors need to work together.
  6. Well-functioning food and agricultural systems are crucial to the resilience of family farmers. FAO supports family farmers’ agricultural activities that can withstand crises.
  7. FAO supports the production of local foods with high nutritional values to support family farmers’ nutrition.
  8. FAO provides nutrition education materials to help farmers decide which foods to produce and consume.
  9. Extension workers trained by FAO in nutrition and resilience are supporting farming families on the ground
  10. FAO helps farming families diversify their sources of food and income to improve resilience and nutrition
