3. What is an eBook?
eTechnology by Sir Smikle
An eBook is a non-editable, reflowable book that is
converted to a digital format to be read on any digital
device such as computer screens or mobile devices.
4. eBooks are files that you can read on a digital device a tablet,
smartphone, computer, etc. But again, considering other files
can be read on digital devices such as word documents
eBooks have specific characteristics that differentiate them.

5. What are these
characteristics?
An eBook should always be converted into a format that ensures it’s
uneditable. With thousands of people having access to it on digital
devices, people could potentially change any content without the
author’s permission. So, in order to qualify as an actual eBook, text should
not be able to be changed in any way, just like a paperback book.

6. What are these
characteristics?
Another important characteristic is that true eBooks should be reflowable.
This means that no matter what the size of the screen you’re viewing the
eBook on, it will always fit your screen; text will remain formatted with line
breaks and chapters and images will resize to fit the proportions of the
device you’re reading on.

7. What are these
characteristics?
While it is easy to get your e-book made and published, there are a
number of things to consider before the production process. These
include details of your e-book such as what format it will be. where you
plan to sell and promote it, who is your target audience, and other
important factors that affect your e-book’s success

8. Food For Thought
Considering PDFs can’t be edited, but they aren’t reflowable, they technically
don’t qualify as eBooks according to the characteristics that differentiate
eBooks. But with businesses taking advantage of the ease of PDF downloads
and distribution, PDFs have become “unofficial” eBooks and are still widely
used eBook formats.

Advantages of eBooks
Cost Effective
eBooks take up less space
eBooks are portable
eBooks can be interactive
eBooks can be easily be accessed
10. eBook formats
An EPUB, or electronic publication,
is the most widely supported
format and can be read on a
variety of devices, including
computers, smartphones, tablets,
and most eReaders (except
Kindles). EPUB files are reflowable,
which make them true eBooks and
easier to read on small devices.
11. AZW (.azw)
AZW files were developed by
Amazon for its Kindle eReaders.
These files can store complex
content like bookmarks, annotations,
and highlights. But use of AZW files
are limited to Kindles or devices with
Kindle apps. Additively, they can only
be accessed from the Amazon online
bookstore.
12. PDF (.pdf)
A PDF, also known as a portable document
format, isn’t technically a true eBook
according to our definition, but it’s the format
most people are familiar with. Created by
Adobe, PDFs are known for their ease of use
and ability to hold custom layouts. Because
they hold their format and aren’t reflowable,
they can be difficult to read on a small
screen. Despite this, they are still one of the
most commonly used eBook formats,
especially by marketers.
13. MOBI( Mobipocket)
Originally used by the Mobipocket e-reader,
the .mobi format is now used by more
popular e-book readers, including Amazon
Kindle and the Kindle apps for iOS and
Android devices. This format is visually
appealing, as it gives readers similar
behaviors to physical books
14. Shockwave
Flash File
SWF is a file extension for a Shockwave Flash file
format created by Macromedia and now owned by
Adobe. SWF stands for Small Web Format.
SWF files can contain video and vector based
animations and sound and are designed for efficient
delivery over the web. SWF files can be viewed in a
web browser using the Flash plug in.
15. EPUB
(ePublication)
The .epub format is similar to .mobi, but
it’s a free, open-source standard for e-
book publishing. Because of this, almost
all e-readers support .epub including
Amazon Kindle Fire, Apple iBooks and
Google Books.
17. E- READERS
A device called an eReader
(electronic reader) was developed
specifically for reading and storing
eBooks. An eReader is simply a
handheld device that eBooks can be
read on.
19. EBOOK DISTRUBUTION
PLATFORMS
A digital publishing platform, simply put. is a tool to
easily publish your content digitally. In today’s society,
consumers want immediate access to the things they
need and enjoy. This includes digital media.
20. EBOOK DISTRUBUTION
PLATFORMS (con't)
A digital publishing platform allows the
creator to house documents on a website
as well as offer users the option to
download. You can also charge for
downloads, sell subscriptions, or give the
content away for free.
