Dear Human Resources,
I am applying for the position of Special Education Teacher presented on your website for
Edison Learning, at Theodore Roosevelt in Gary, IN. I currently hold an Indiana State Teaching
License in Special Education. I have previously taught on a substitute license for a number of
years until I received my state license April 30 of 2013. My first full time teaching position was
in an urban area and I have discovered a deep connection and dedication for teaching within the
urban school environment.
I both welcomed and was honored to have the privilege to work with children who were dealing
with emotional, developmental, behavioral, and social issues. It presents a unique situation so
very diverse and challenging. Many times the only peace and stability that students have are
when they are in the classroom setting and it is the responsibility of educators to provide this
type of environment for them. Consistency, respect, compassion, encouragement and teamwork
are essential as we work together to help students strive to achieve the greatness they deserve and
long for.
I am currently working toward my Master’s Degree in Special Education, I have two classes
remaining that I am working to complete during the 2016/2017 school year. I have received
certification in suicide prevention. During Child Abuse Prevention Month, in April, workshops
are sponsored by the SPEA Department, at IUN in Gary. I try to attend these to stay abreast of
what is available to help us as educators identify the needs of our students, and to be better
acquainted with the court systems should there be a need to have a greater involvement. My
CPR, first aid and AED certification are valid through September 2016.
I continue to look for resources to continue expanding and updating my professional skills. I
have a firm conviction literacy is the key to all learning. I believe that with patience,
perseverance and fortitude we can help our children learn to read and write. We have the
responsibility to help all of our students reach for the stars.
Sincerely,
Evelyn A. Starkey
