To summarize “Learning from Las Vegas” in short, enormous change of Las Vegas
throughout the years has been known as a phenomenon architectural
communication. Symbol has rather dominates space as symbols create Las Vegas
to a communication system. The manipulation of signage as direction is first
presented through a sense of scale and space, parking lots as symbol at the front
reassure conveniences and draw in patrons. Conversely, architecture is defined in
slight through the big signs of Vegas. For instance, building were set back behind
parking lots, creating a bight that was wide for transitional ornamentation to
communicate across. The authors also mention that “Las Vegas is to the strip what
Rome is to the Piazza”, Vegas has implemented the essence of Piazza with huge
scales, high speed routes and large open spaces. In parallel to Piazza, places in
Vegas are well connected as they are wide and accommodate varies active settings
at a time. Strips with various settings are rapidly changing over the decades,
nonetheless, it responds fast to changes. Besides, function plays a huge part in style
of building, but interior and exterior are often in contradiction due to the function of
building. However, adaptation of styles are merely pointless in this context in fact it
was often to be seen covered by huge signs that shows directly or perpendicularly
towards the road.
In conclusion to this paper, authors’ stance that symbolism is very important to
sense of civilization are worth endorsing and symbol has certainly serves major
parts in terms of guidance and indication, they are used in all spheres of life.
Nevertheless, symbol itself should not overpower the architecture whereas it should
instead serves as a tool that support and integrate with the surrounding. On the
contrary, architecture delivers a transitional of human civilization in time, it also
undergo as a masterpiece for study by future generations therefore, it should
outstand the context.
