SYNOPSIS NO: 3 READER TITLE: The Geometry of Feeling
AUTHOR: Juhani Pallasmaa
Does Form is the merely play in architecture?
In this reading, the author Juhani Pallasmaa say that architecture cannot be a mere play with form.
For example, nowadays very few modern buildings appeal to our feelings, but almost any anonymous
house in an old town or the most unpretentious farm outbuilding give us a sense of familiarity and
pleasure. Therefore, it is time that we considered whether form or geometry in general can give rise
to architectural feeling. Are form the real basic elements of architecture or even the elements such
as walls, windows or door the real units of architectural effects. Form only affect our feeling through
what it represents. The artistic dimension of a work of art does not lie in the actual physical things, it
exists only in the consciousness of the person experiencing it. Its meaning lies not in its form, but in
the images transmitted by the forms and the emotional force that they carry. The inner architecture
of the mind emerging out of feelings and memory images is built on different principles from the
architecture developed out of professional approaches.
I remember the day I was staying in my hostel. My room is a single unit bedroom which attached with
a window which visually link to the front yard of the hostel. I am sad, things happened during the
weeks were mentally bring me down, my life is completely a mess. I sitting on my bed, leaning on
the wall and stare blankly at the window. I off the light, pretend that there is no one in the room. Light
hitting in my room through the window. Watching on the light ray that hitting in my room, bad
memories are emerging in my mind. Tears falls.
From the example we can conclude that, the feelings evoked regardless the form but from the
different elements that integrated with the space. Form is not the merely play in architecture.
