2. Introduction
A Wood splitter is a piece of machinery or equipment used for splitting firewood
from softwood or hardwood logs that have been pre-cut into sections by using
motor.
The cutter-splitter includes a wedge and a primary splitting blade for splitting a log
along its length.
The project proposes a logical approach to fabricate the portable hydraulic based
log cutter.
The total energy required to separate the wood into portions is reduced .
3. Working Principle
A hydraulic log splitter is used to effectively split wood using the Pascal’s
principle of fluids. This is a principle that compresses fluids to exert a force that in
this case, would be used to split the logs.
The hydraulic jack is a device used for lifting heavy loads by the application of
much smaller force. It is based on Pascal’s law, which states that intensity of
pressure is transmitted equally in all directions through a mass of fluid at rest.
DC motor and Hydraulic jack are connected through crank lever mechanism that is
used to impart desired motion to pivoted bar from dc motor.
4. LITERATURE SURVEY
Johnston James L (Oct 23, 1984) –:
Principal objects of the present invention are to provide an efficient means for processing a
log into log segments and to then split the log segments into fireplace pieces while
maintaining continuity of the pieces for packaging, thereby gaining economy and greater
output of product through simplicity of operations.
Barker Thomas L (Sep 2, 1986) –
In accordance with the invention, an apparatus is provided which is portable and provides
essentially automatic cutting and splitting of a log into fireplace-sized pieces. The various
components are preferably mounted on a trailer which can be easily pulled to the location of
the logs to be split and easily set up. The various components are compactly arranged on
the trailer and may be easily moved to the operational position from the travelling position.
A log deck which receives logs prior to their being cut is extensible so that the apparatus is
capable of sawing extremely long logs and may be conveniently shortened for travelling.
5. Floyd Freeman (Aug 11, 2000) –
One embodiment of the present invention is a machine for processing fallen trees into split logs
comprising frame means including wheels mounted thereto and further including a main frame supported
by the wheels upon ground allowing the frame to be moved into a forest, a chute mounted on the frame
and including an entrance to receive a fallen tree, pulling means mounted to the frame and operable to
removable attach to the fallen tree and pull same through the entrance and into the chute, saw means
movably mounted.
Hollister Jr Graham (Oct 24, 2009) –
Method of splitting wood is a single wedge or the like fastened to an hydraulic ram or the like and forced
against the end of a log held in place by an appropriate mechanism. In this manner the log is also split in
such manner as the wedge or the like may strike the log and it will normally split along natural lines of the
growth of that particular log such as variations in the grain, knots and the like. The result is always
unevenness of the exact individual split of wood, as compared to other similar splits made by the same
equipment.

Nowadays in this country, the most available jacks are manually powered, we found out that these manual
hydraulic jacks were very difficult to be used by our farmers especially the female ones because of the
strength and energy needed to operate it making it to be time consuming; furthermore, in scenarios of
these manual hydraulic jack malfunctioning and subsequently the collapse of the machine under
maintenance could lead to musculoskeletal disorders, injuries of the neck, back and shoulder. Thus, to
overcome this problem of drudgery, musculoskeletal disorders, injuries, increase timeliness and efficiency in
the farm while changing tires and carrying out some other maintenance works beneath the tractor
prompted the design of a remote controlled motorized hydraulic jack for tractors
6. Main Components of Setup
Foundation
Hydraulic jack
DC Motor
Transformer
Frame
Cutting blade
Diode
Battery
Resistor
7. Frame: This is made of cast iron .it is highly rigid. Hydraulic piston is mounted on the
base.
DC motor: Almost all the electro-mechanical movements we see around us are caused
either by an AC or a DC motor. Here we will be exploring DC motors. This is a device that
converts DC electrical energy to a mechanical energy.
Step-Down Transformer
The transformer is designed to convert high-voltage, low-current power into a low-voltage,
high current power and it is mainly used in domestic consumption.
Here we are using step down transformer to convert 230 V AC into 12 V AC
Diode
The fundamental property of a diode is its tendency to conduct electric current in only one
direction. This is a simplistic view, but is true for diodes operating as rectifiers, switches, and
limiters. The forward breakover voltage is approximately six tenths of a volt (0.6 V) for silicon
devices, 0.3 V for germanium devices, and 1 V for selenium devices.
8. Battery:
A 12 V rechargeable battery, storage battery, secondary cell, or accumulator is a type
electrical battery which can be charged, discharged into a load, and recharged many
times. Rechargeable batteries are produced in many different shapes and sizes,
from button cells to megawatt systems connected to stabilize an electrical distribution
network.
Resistor:
A resistor is a passive two-terminal electrical component that implements electrical
resistance as a circuit element. In electronic circuits, resistors are used to reduce
flow, adjust signal levels, to divide voltages, bias active elements, and terminate
transmission lines, among other uses.
Hydraulic Jack :
A jack, screw jack or jackscrew is a mechanical device used as a lifting device to lift
heavy loads or to apply great forces. A mechanical jack employs a screw thread for
lifting heavy equipment. A hydraulic jack uses hydraulic power. The most common
is a car jack, floor jack or garage jack, which lifts vehicles so that maintenance can be
performed. Jacks are usually rated for a maximum lifting capacity ( 5 tons). Industrial
jacks can be rated for many tons of load.
11. Specification of Components
Load Lifting capacity of hydraulic jack = 5 Ton .
Diameter of the Hydraulic jack piston = 2.5 cm
Maximum lift of hydraulic jack = 14 cm .
RPM of the DC motor = 600 RPM .
Auxiliary gear RPM= 60 RPM
Voltage rating of the motor = 12 volt .
Length of the vertical member of frame = 45 cm .
Base dimension = ( 60 * 40) .
Material of cutter = sharp cast iron .
14. How it works
AC Supply from mains
Step down Transformer ( 230V AC to 12 V AC).
Rectifier ( 12V AC to 12V DC)
Battery ( Storage)
Motor ( Rotary motion)
Crank lever Mechanism ( Rotary to Reciprocating motion )
Hydraulic Jack ( To lift wood and exert pressure)
Cutter
15. Application
• It is a hydraulic machine that is used for the purpose of splitting logs into a smaller
size which are able to be used for firewood.
• smaller firewood splitters are intended for home
• The rising cost of domestic heating gas oil has reawakened a desire for alternative
fuel sources and burning wood is carbon neutral.
• It has commercial use also because after splitting large part of timber, they can be
simply carried to other locations to be used as raw source of heat generation in
industries.
16. ADVANTAGES :-
Hydraulic log splitter is less strenuous as compared to using axes or saws and
hence considered as the better on many counts
Ease and accuracy of control: By the use of simple levers and push buttons, the
operator of a hydraulic system can easily start, stop.
Constant force and torque: Only fluid power systems are capable of providing a
constant torque or force regardless of speed changes.
A hydraulic wood splitter split the wood ,which can be also used as different
sources of energy.
Simple, safe and economical: In general, hydraulic systems use fewer moving parts
in comparison with mechanical and electrical systems.
17. LIMITATIONS
Capacity limit up to 5 ton.
Lift is a constraint to the length of wood.
Handling of hydraulic oils which can be quite messy. It is also very difficult to
completely eliminate leakage in a hydraulic system.
