PREVENTING CORROSION DURING SHUT DOWNS
1. PREVENTING CORROSION DURING SHUT DOWNS,
PRESERVATION AND MOTHBALLING
YOUR BUSINESS PARTNER IN CORROSION PROTECTION…
2. PRESERVATION OF PLANT MATERIALS AND
EQUIPMENT
Each preservation project requires consideration of various factors,
including the :
• intended term of protection
• the storage conditions,
• the available resources for installation and
• the value of the equipment
• assessing and understanding preservation products and
• installation options (more specifically what support is available
before & after installation)
We provide MULTIPLE TURNKEY SOLUTIONS to all industries,
including MARINE, PETROCHEMICAL, REFINERIES, CONSTRUCTION,
CORPORATE & DOMESTIC PROJECTS
Our products are GUARANTEED to keep your equipment in a
SERVICEABLE CONDITION and OUR SERVICES ARE PROFESSIONAL &
COMPLETE
Several months prior to PRESERVATION of PLANT MATERIALS &
EQUIPMENT (MOTHBALLING) a PRESERVATION PROGRAM is
compiled. It usually contains the following criteria :
• 1) A Preservation Plan
• 2) Processing Inventory of Plant Materials / Equipment
• 3) Preservation Product Reference Charts (choosing the correct
products & services for each component)
• 4) Project Samples
3. PLAN, IDENTIFY & RECORD INFORMATION OF PRESERVATION
COMPILING AND FOLLOWING A PLAN is critical to being able to measure the project’s success. Success will be
measured as having ADEQUATE PROTECTION to prevent corrosion at the lowest cost.
ADEQUATE PROTECTION relates to NO CORROSION ON CRITICAL SURFACES and as defined by the Client.
Sometimes “COSMETIC RUST” is acceptable if the cost of preservation is greater than the depreciation, rework or
replacement costs of the part.
Cost should be compared over the term of the mothballing period. Cost of NO PRESERVATION or POOR PROTECTION
includes REPLACEMENT OF EQUIPMENT, PARTS, LABOUR AND DOWNTIME. Cost of preservation includes
preservation products plus the labour to install and remove them. Of all the costs, the ones least likely to impact the project
costs are the preservation products. However, the selection of those products and their proper installation has the greatest
impact on other costs.
A SUCCESSFUL PRESERVATION or “MOTHBALLING” PROJECT DEPENDS
UPON THE FOLLOWING:
1) PROJECT SAMPLING (A PILOT OPERATION TO ASSESS VIABILITY)
2) A PRESERVATION PLAN (WHAT NEEDS TO BE ACHIEVED)
3) PROCESSING PLANT EQUIPMENT (LISTING OF PLANT EQUIPMENT)
4) PROCEDURES AND METHODS (DOCUMENTING ALL THE STEPS)
4. PRESERVATION OF PLANT MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
Costs of PRESERVATION should be compared over the term of the mothballing
period, taking into account :
1. COST OF NO PRESERVATION or POOR PROTECTION includes replacement of
equipment, parts, labour and downtime.
2. COST OF PRESERVATION includes preservation products plus the labour to
install and remove them.
• OF ALL THE COSTS OF A PRESERVATION PROJECT, THE COSTS LEAST LIKELY TO
IMPACT ON THE PROJECT COSTS ARE THE PRESERVATION COSTS.
However, the SELECTION OF THE PRODUCTS & SERVICES and the CORRECT
APPLICATION often has the GREATEST IMPACT on costs
For example, the costs of LIQUID PRESERVATIVES vs ENCAPSULATION and other
safe alternatives that we provide may show that ENCAPSULATION covering the
same area as the LIQUID PRESERVATIVES to be MORE EXPENSIVE. What is often
not taken into account is to REMOVE THE LIQUID PRESERVATIVES with
DANGEROUS SOLVENTS including the associated waste and handling of bi-
products, then the SCALE IS TIPPED TOTALLY TOWARD ENCAPSULATION
In order to help you to understand the ASSOCIATED COSTS and ADDITIONAL
STEPS IN CLEANING AND RESTORING YOUR EQUIPMENT TO AN OPERATIONAL
STATE OF READINESS you will see that NOT ALL EQUIPMENT REQUIRES THE SAME
TREATMENT and A COMBINATION OF SOLUTIONS may best suit your Project.
WE HAVE THE SOLUTION FOR YOU NO MATTER WHAT YOUR REQUIREMENTS
ARE…OUR PRODUCTS & SERVICES ARE GUARANTEED TO PROTECT YOUR
EQUIPMENT & MATERIALS
WE HAVE VARIOUS SOLUTIONS BASED ON DESIGNED DEVELOPED AND
IMPLEMENTED RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT AS WELL AS SPECIFIC CLIENT
REQUIREMENTS EFFECTIVELY & SUCCESSFULLY
5. STORAGE & PRESERVATION TERMS
SHORT TERM
Also known as “seasonal” like a
normal ANNUAL SHUT DOWN.
Usually, this period extends for three
months or less, so no equipment
dismantling is involved. Little or no
maintenance is performed and all
components are left ready to run
MEDIUM TERM
Could be anywhere between 3 to 24
months and may have an
undetermined time frame. Typically,
steps must be taken to prevent
corrosion and air and moisture
intrusion. Drainage may be necessary
for fluids, temporary heaters or
dehumidifiers could be required, and
certain equipment may be isolated or
disconnected.
LONG TERM
This is similar to MEDIUM TERM, but
the time frame is indefinite - usually
well over 12 months. It would require
major work and expense to restore
operations. The client may also elect
to sell off pieces of equipment, or the
entire plant. Also referred to as
“MOTHBALLING STAGE”
For STORAGE & PRESERVATION, there is often confusion as to what is meant by “short term”, “medium term”
and “long term”. Here are the explanations of these COMMON TERMS :
6. 3 BIGGEST THREATS TO PLANT EQUIPMENT THAT IS
TAKEN OUT OF COMMISSION
MOISTURE / WATER BUILD UP inside the machine
that can break down into acids that cause internal
corrosion
VIBRATION from external movement causing
“microwelding” of contacting surfaces (better known
as fretting or galvanic corrosion)
FOREIGN CONTAMINANTS that can cause abrasive
wear on plant machinery casings and moving machine
parts. Dust is a leading contributor of machine failure
and can cause extensive damage which is often non
repairable
3 BEST SOLUTIONS TO MINIMISE DAMAGE TO PLANT
EQUIPMENT OUT OF COMMISSION
INTERCEPT provides the best “medium to long term”
Moisture Protection for up to 15 years (replaces ALL
VCI processes)
VISCOTAQ has an effective range of products that
solves this issue. It will prevent galvanic &
atmospheric corrosion, reduce cathodic protection
current and is totally inert
DR SHRINK, VERISAFE and POWER SHRINK ShrinkFoil
provides a strong barrier preventing dirt, dust and
grime settling on non-moisture affected plant
equipment and warehouse stock that causes corrosion
7. Many industries are often faced with CORROSION &
RUST on their equipment that is stored for medium or
long periods of time. INTERCEPT TECHNOLOGY is
designed to protect equipment for periods of up to 15
YEARS without the need to oil and grease it. It has
been tested and used extensively at ESKOM POWER
STATIONS for the protection of their pumps and
generators that are stored for SHUTDOWNS, REGULAR
MAINTENANCE, PRESERVATION & “MOTHBALLING”
The equipment is wrapped in 200 micron INTERCEPT
SHRINK FILM, DESIGNED FOR EXTRACTING MOISTURE
Where necessary CLAY DESSICANT & INSPECTION
HATCHES are installed and shrunk to a drum tight
finish. The result is an AIRTIGHT COCOON and with
the desiccants actively working to keep moisture out,
it is GUARANTEED to last for up to 15 YEARS provided
it is being installed by a competent INTERCEPT
SERVICE PROVIDER
8. VERISAFE & DR SHRINK SHRINK FOIL is specifically designed and manufactured for Encapsulation & Containment Projects,
with the main purpose of creating safe working environments for artisans in the event of inclement weather or activities such as
Grit Blasting, Spray Painting & Asbestos Removal and many more…
Mess Room Facilities, Temporary Workshops, Storage Areas & much more can be created by using this material and our artistic
vision
When transporting materials, equipment, prefabricated vessels etc, many clients request that their products are encapsulated
(shrink wrapped) to minimize damages in transit, theft of components and to protect the general condition of their products
